Let's return for a moment to last spring, when doom and gloom descended on the San Joaquin Valley in the form of water-allotment reductions that, we were told, would bankrupt the farmers, idle the workers and turn the region into a modern dust bowl.

the "dust bowl" claims made by Corp Ag in the Central Valley was a complete fabrication and PR job. while claiming 40% AG unemployment in 2009 what the public was not told is that is not unusual in Fresno County and that was more due to construction downturns and the lower prices crops were getting.

remember how the whole PR spin was about a "stupid little smelt", which even 60 Minutes did a show on, it was actually about our State losing our salmon fisheries. how about 100% unemployment within the salmon industry? Recreational sport charter, guide, commercial, hotel, tackle shops and boat and boat equipment sales all took such a hit that many are already out of business. This has affected Monterey as well. 2 years of no salmon season meant loss of income, especially during the typically slow month of April when salmon season tradtionally opens, people come from all over the state to fish in Monterey Bay early during the salmon run becasue this is usually the best fishing in the Ocean during Spring.
