Dec 5, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The New Zealand Herald

The alternative spirit is seeping across the bay to Oakland, a once down-at-heel city that's on the up, says Christian Koch.

This is one hell of a positive spin story for crime filled Oakland. Though the article briefly mentions Oakland's on going criminal problem, it glosses over the fact that Oakland is the most dangerous city in the USA. This story smacks of a Jean Quan lie/twist of the truth. Don't believe a word of this article. The focus should be on combatting crime, not lying as to how hip and cool Oakland is.

Really! You are an Oaklander? Dangerous? I visit Oakland all the time and it's awesome. Maybe once in awhile, when good things are happening to this town, you nay want to tell people that.

Oakland is the Detroit of the West Coast. Crime, gangs, blight, poverty, etc. Not much to be proud of.

There is reality, then there is SFantasy. You obviously have turned a blind eye to what Oakland has become, the armpit of the East Bay.

Regardless...the police force are 200 officers shy of what they need to be staffed at per population.

That statistic alone will keep me from ever contemplating moving there.

It hasn't worked in Detroit, it won't work in Oakland. Quan is not smart enough to start the process.

I think it might just work over time. Detroit was nice when industry reigned supreme. For gentrification to work you need industry to support it. The tech boom in Silicon Valley is huge, and "would be" home owners are starting to buy houses in west Oakland & developers are starting to cater to that. I am hearing article after article about Oakland complaining about gentrification happening recently n "hyper mode". This makes me hopefully that Oakland might turn around.

Gentrification is good

Gentrification is a great idea

Gentrification is the right thing to do when everything else has failed.

Good old Chatham on the Thames. Used to drive there from Detroit for the Retrofest. Good times.

San Francisco is just a shadow of what it once was. Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me. Oakland is better than San Francisco, but you need to know your way around.
