San Diego's Red Berets
Wherever you may be in San Diego, be it driving through City Heights, or clubbing in the Gaslamp Quarter, you may catch a glimpse of the San Diego Guardian Angels on patrol.
Wearing their signature red berets, white t-shirts with GA logo, and red Guardian Angels jackets, they are walking in formation, searching for citizens who may require assistance. Unarmed and connected by radios, "We are like a mobile neighborhood watch. The difference is, we will utilize our verbal communication skills to calm a situation," says Lara Gaudio, assistant chapter leader.
The Guardian Angels Safety Patrol is part of the Alliance of Guardian Angels, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that includes the Cyberangels, Urban Angels and Junior Angels. Started in 1979 by president and founder, Curtis Sliwa, today the Guardian Angels span the entire world, including chapters in Japan, Sweden, London, South Africa, and the Philippines.
The San Diego Chapter began in 1982 and continues today with Erick Wong as chapter leader since 2001.
To become a Guardian Angel, one must be at least 16 years of age. There is a 3 month training period where the trainee learns self-defense, patrol techniques, communication skills, first-aid and CPR.
"The police can't be everywhere at once, and we are the extra eyes and ears for the community," Gaudio says. " We will always do something to help, even if that means simply making a phone call ."
The Guardian Angels are regular citizens who volunteer their spare time to make their community a safer place. Made up of diverse ages and cultures, any interested person is encouraged to join. The San Diego Guardian Angels are currently looking for volunteers. Think about making a difference today. Time spent patrolling the streets is time well spent.
Can't volunteer? The San Diego Guardian Angels are in need of funding, donated office space or headquarters, office supplies and equipment. Mountain bikes are needed for bike patrol. Your support is needed; no donation is too small! tax-deductible.
