Downtown Library One Step Closer, But Far From Reality

The San Diego City Council's decision to put the proposed $185 million downtown library out to bid met great fanfare by supporters, but financial doubts remain.

This is clearly a project that needs to be put on the ballot. There are sooo many issues that need to be reviewed and some that don't make sense. This is really true for a City that is broke AKA bankrupt. Even if, which I don't believe, the library will not cost the City a dime, the staffing, upkeep and lost property taxes on the real estate are not affordable. At a time when we are broke AND technologiy is rapidly changing the way we aquire knowledge this is plain stupid. It would be cheaper to buy everyone a free laptop or all the books they can read than build and stock this monument.
