Cuts are going to happen.
As parents with children who go to public school, I would pay more.
I currently volunteer twice a week.
How many parents are volunteering who protested?
Americans...being food fed from the government teet. Take some accountability and get involved with your childrens school and education.

You are to be commended for your involvement as a school volunteer. Several years ago, California introduced a state lottery--the proceeds of which our schools and state colleges were to benefit from. It appears that the only sources that benefited from the State’s income of millions and millions of lottery dollars are those individuals who were lucky enough to win. Here in San Diego and throughout California, we have good reason to protest the loss of our school teachers, nurses and other valuable support staff. It would appear that the education of our children is not as highly regarded or valued as other State budget line items like roads and bridges, waterways, salaries, etc. How fortunate, according to your comment, that you and the State of Ohio are sharing accountability for the education of your children. Although many Californian’s are committed to the academic excellence of our children and our schools, the State of California has budgeted priorities that do not include as you noted in your comment “accountability and getting involved with children’s school and education.” "Being 'spoon'fed from the government teet", as you suggested, has left our California school system ematiated, half starved and bone thin. |

24 of 26 teachers at my school received pink slips. We have all been there for the past 5 years. Our school just received the Distinguished Schools Award and a Title 1 Award. Many of us have continued our education, receiving Masters Degrees and National Board Certification. We do all of this for our students. How does removing all of these dedicated teachers make sense? Thanks to all that came out today to support education! |

How is it that we have continued to increase the amount of funding to our education systems, at a rate greater than inflation, and yet have lower outcomes in regards to student achievement?
Teachers have worked hard and have sacrificed alot, and I give them all the credit that they deserve. However, there is something missing here that giving our education systems more money hasn't solved. Maybe we should look at these problems rather then looking at the bottom line that is looking at the amount of $$$ going to feed the system. |

Because parents complain instead of finding solutions. Because you parents don't demand from their elected representatives that waste be cut and efficiencies be put in place. Because most parents are not involved in their childs education..they look at it as daycare Because we keep elected the same morons over and over again. Until the American idiots wake up and realize we should focus on education and use the money efficiently, then this issue will continue. America is now a third world country in regards to education. We worry more about Britney Spears than we do our childs future. |

You articulate a true but sad state of affairs for our education system. Federal, state and local funding of education has increased, but it appears that EDUCATION is not a priority for the United States of America, therefore funds allocated to our schools aren’t getting there, are being misused, or........ Our youth are victims of an educational system that devalues teachers committed to a task that local school boards and school administrators do not or cannot support because of political red tape and procedural roadblocks. Twenty, 30, 40 years ago, charter schools were non-existent and private schools were few and far-between. That’s because in the public schools, teachers managed/controlled their classrooms. They developed curriculum within guidelines that were not restrictive of the learning and teaching process. Not only were they able to teach reading, writing and arithmetic, they imparted values—we don’t hit, kick, bite, call names, bully; we respect our classmates who look, walk, talk, or act different than we do. Today, teachers can be reprimanded and/or fired for imparting the values of Fulghum's book, "All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten". Teachers are reprimanded and/or fired for not following State developed curriculums that don’t seem to be working. Johnny can’t read or write a complete sentence, Mary doesn’t know where Oklahoma or Idaho is on a map and neither of them can sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” or even know that it’s our national anthem. Funding for Art, Music and Physical Education is practically nil, so children don’t know a Picasso from an oboe from an uneven parallel bar. Could it be that the education fund pie once consumed solely by the public and State school system is now being shared with Charter Schools and other alternative education schools? Are parents with their children in tow and fed-up teachers fleeing the public school system leaving behind overcrowded classrooms, unappreciated teachers, by-the-book administrators and students who suffer at the mercy of a non-scholarship affirming curriculum? I dare say,“yes”. If we as a people are going to influence Federal/State/Local funding for public education, WE the people, have to do more than pay lip service to the awful way our teachers and education systems are being treated and devalued. Parents, community leaders, politicians, all who care, must join schoolteachers--from primary to college, nurses, janitors and support staff to show the-powers-that-be,“WE’RE MAD AS HELL AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE.” Firing teachers, nurses and support staff from any school in the United States of America—one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, because of the lack of funds, should be repulsive and nauseating to each of us. |

OMG...I just received a totally unnecessary threatening letter from the board of education informing me that my child has been truant more than 3 times and for me to contact the school councelor or administrator so I can work with them to ensure my child the best education. What a bunch of crap!!! My child missed three days because of personal family business. I informed the school office and the teachers ahead of time that both my children would be absent and asked if there was any makeup work they could do while being out. The time it took whomever to write the stupid letter, the mailing of the letter and the time of the school administration office is totally unnecessary and an absolutely unexcusable expense. If my tax money is paying for that kind of crap, I'm really pissed. Of course I know my child was absent, I'm the one who called the school! Why would I get a letter for one child and not the other when they were both out on the same days. Just an example of how our education dollars are being spent. The admin office is not doing a very good job and money is being spent in unnecessary ways. Too bad the teachers are getting fired to save money. How about saving money by getting rid of all the unnecessary spending first. DUH!!!!

How about getting rid of all the bilingual classes and programs to save money. All education should be in this nations language, which is "English" for anyone that isn't sure. If you don't speak the english language go pay for a special education to learn the language of this country. Here's a couple ideas...1) Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage. 2) If foreigners come here and buy land... options will be restricted. Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens naturally born into this country. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, or other government assistance programs. Any burden will be deported. Why are we sacraficing so much for these people that don't belong here in the first place?

Just because parents don't volunteer at school doesn't mean we aren't involved in our children's education full force. My daughter is a 4th grade GATE student who is determined to go to Harvard University and we are going to do everything in our power to make that dream a reality. I am a single parent and working professional that has instilled education as a priority in my child's life and she has a love of learning. I have had her in various universities around the nation as a leader within my sorority and she has learned tremendously from these experiences. Along with working full time, I am currently enrolled in graduate school for the most part on line so that I can balance raising my daughter and providing for us. We are also very active within our church as I am on the audio/visual team and my daughter is active in her youth group. My daughter and I have a strong spiritual foundation as well. My daughter is actually more well balanced than many children I know being raised in a 2 parent household. I highly recommend that you don't jump to conclusions about people just because you don't see them volunteering at the schools. As it is I barely get enough sleep each night and I am doing a great job as a mother, working professional and student.
I agree that some people are not as involved as they should be however maybe no one took the time to instill a love of learning for them at a young age. It is everyone's responsibility to raise the standards for education. It's the communities responsibility to ensure that all children get a decent education, it impacts all of us. If the kids don't get a decent education then they may choose a path of crime or something that doesn't have them contribute as a productive citizen. This will impact taxpayers as well. As Americans we need to do more ahead of time to prevent this rather then try to band aid the problem later or build more prisons. Again I agree more people, not just parents, everyone in their respective communities needs to get involved as we all have a stake in education and a responsibility to educate all children. A concerned, active, working professional, mom, student and strong child advocate, raised in New York and currently a San Diego Resident for the past 13 years This is what I stand for: Mission "The purpose of Omega Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated is to Serve and Educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. As positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors." Vision "OPBSI envisions a world without oppression, where empowered women celebrate the essence of womanhood and act as resources in the advancement of their communities. "

Giving more money to an already failing and corrupt system does not educate our children nor help our society as a whole.$68 Billion dollars was the budget last year for Education in California and that money did not go to our children and the classrooms. Taxpayers do not want to pay more taxes to give more money to politicians and their families. People would be willing to give more money if they knew it actually was going to the children to fund their education. Until the Government in California opens up their budget books and shows us where everything is going and being spend no one wants to pay more taxes. The current public school system in California is failing and is at the bottom in the Nation, which is horrific especially for being such a largely populated state. Massachusetts has the # 1 public school system in the nation, New York is in the middle of the nation and spends 75% more per student annually then California. We need to look at states that are more successful then our own and revamp the whole system. Throwing money at an already failing problem is not the answer. I encourage you to suggest some solutions as well. How is the public school system in Ohio? How does it rank in the nation? Are the children of Ohio coming out of high school prepared for trades or ready for college? If Ohio is doing something that California isn't then please let us know what your state is doing so we can propose it and get things moving for our children, which is essence is all of our children. We are all interconnected whether you want to believe that or not. We all impact each other. Civil Society Institute based in Newton, Massachusetts (# 1 public school system in the nation is in Massachusetts right now) http://www.civilsocietyinstitute.org How We Make a Difference The nonprofit and nonpartisan Civil Society Institute (http://www.CivilSocietyInstit ute.org) is a think tank that serves as a catalyst for change by creating problem-solving interactions among people, and between communities, government and business that can help to improve society. Insight into programs that have and have not worked in recent years has led Civil Society Institute to a unique model for addressing society’s most pressing problems. Simply stated, our approach lies in the way we serve as catalysts for change, especially in key areas of critical need: science policy and regenerative medicine, climate change and global security and economic change. In each of these areas, we seek out examples of creative thinking and activities already underway, including those of individuals, community groups, businesses and the nonprofit and public sectors. We create interactions between people, communities, government and business in order to link successful programs to groups who can use them, to eliminate obstacles to success and to encourage informed debate of the issues. We also support these efforts with strategic planning and, on occasion, funding. We’re committed to improving society with breakthrough thinking and creative action. |

I am saddened by your comment. Most Americans are immigrants ("foreigners" you call them) to this country who came here speaking their native language. The Irish, Germans, Italians, Chinese and Scottish were told by naive, bigoted, intolerants, the same thing you said in your comment,“These people don’t belong here”.
Today’s “foreigners”, whether from Bosnia, Cambodia, Somalia, Afghanistan, Mexico, Russia or other nations, are being subjected to the same vile resentment, apathy, anger and venom you spew. Blaming “foreigners” for our dysfunctional educational system is ludicrous. You suggest that “foreigners”“go pay for a special education to learn the language”. For most, finding employment and feeding their families is their first thought in the morning and their last prayer at night. Many don’t have the extended family nor support groups that 16th 17th 18th century “foreigners” enjoyed. I gather from the tone of your note that your people did not come to America as “foreigners”--that they were the original inhabitants of this land that my family has called home for seven generations. You live in New Jersey. Is it a New Jersey tribe or band of Native Americans you hail from? The Cherokee, Nanticoke and Ramapough were just a few of the Indian cultures that called New Jersey ‘home’ for centuries before “foreigners” arrived at Plymouth. You’re not an Oneida from upstate New York are you? As a Native American whose people were slaughtered, dehumanized and eventually forced onto reservations by “foreigners”, I can only imagine the pain in the hearts and souls of your Indian ancestors when they cried the same lament you wrote in your comment--“WHY ARE WE SACRIFICING SO MUCH FOR THESE PEOPLE THAT DON’T BELONG HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE”. How ironic that your Native American ancestors felt the same as you. You suggested that “foreigners can invest in this country” and I agree! Some of us “foreigners” arrived here crossing the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean on steamships or slave ships--others via the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea. Some crossed the borders of Texas, Arizona, Canada and California. Many flew in via one-way airline tickets on TWA, PanAm, Quantas, etc. More "foreigners", not counted by the U.S.Census, have entered on visas through our colleges and universities, American & foreign businesses and corporations. So here we ALL are! And, just as sure as the sun will come up tomorrow, the bodies and souls of legions of “foreigners” will yearn to live in America--just like generations of “foreigners” before us. Maybe YOU, as a volunteer, can lead the charge to “invest in this country”. Teach English as a second language to a “foreigner” who doesn’t speak English!! You don’t have to know the language of the person you’re teaching. Remember the flash cards our parents and teachers used when we were in kindergarten through 2nd or 3rd grade? A classroom teacher or school principal will give you a set! Or make your own cards—words, colors, maps, furniture, fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. YOU CAN DO IT!! Your “foreign” students will be grateful to you for your kindness! They will always remember what you did for them when they came to this country and didn’t know an “A” from a “B” or a head of cabbage from a head of lettuce. And, as an added bonus, while you’re teaching English, YOU’LL LEARN a foreign language and culture!! You’ll be bi-lingual! The next time you’re out-and-about and you’re annoyed by a man, woman or teen “foreigner” who is not speaking English, take the scowl off your face, flash your smile and one of the cards you will have on ya’. The "foreigner" will know what you’re trying to communicate to them—then they will smile too!! Cease these special and sometimes awkward moments to reach out and show kindness to a "foreigner" while at the same time you "pay it forward". |

The reason why they are so concerned about your childs attendence and not how well your child is actually doing in learning the taught curriculam and knowledge beyond that standard is because they don't really care about that goal. What they see is that they recieve funding from the State based on your childs attendence. There is a set amount of state and federal funds a K-12 school gets based on a per student attend count and the amount of days that child attends. Ideally this means more funds go to where the student population is. However, what this does is make the administrators worry about funding based on attendence, and not based on achievement. |
