Wanglow, you betcha! I've got your back my friend, in a nation of increasingly government dole whiners. WHAT memorial? Never heard of it, and if it IS there, why HAS it been closed to those who helped pay for it? Peter, they may have been lazy, but bad form calling them "spooks." (Egad, I am close to vomit, agreeing with Shay58 on this one...)

Ned, The statue of Liberty has had the stairs to the crown and torch closed since 9/11. It just reopened last month. Closed to the public doesn't equate to it not having a value to be there.

The fact that many servicemen died in serving our country there is value enough for the memorial.

"MITB" thanks for identifying the memorial; I hadn't had enough coffee to do the math on it before posting. Agreed; why HAS that part of the memorial been off limits? Makes no sense to THIS veteran either. Aren’t there already ARMED guards patrolling that piece of real estate?

It was amazing how much security you have to go through to get into the Statue of Liberty. First you can only get tickets to go up in the Statue from the New Jersey side. Otherwise you just get to go to Ellis Island and the SoL grounds.

Then once at the Statue, you go through a metal detector and a puffer (for explosives), all while being watched by armed guards.

But it was well worth it. Lady Liberty sure looks good for 130 plus years old. Of course she got a better face lift than Joan Rivers!

At least you were able to see what you did; when my ship was there for the July 4th reopening in 1986, I was unable to visit due to having the duty that last day in-port. The best thing France ever made, that grand lady of liberty!

JOAN RIVERS? Showing your age my friend!:o)

That old lady (Rivers) is still performing. Her bits are older than her face. In fact one more face lift and I think she will sport a van dyke.

What was really interesting about lady liberty is that the interior structure was used in the Eiffel tower in France. The designer was Gustave who also built the Eiffel tower. All of these things are within the statue in the museum which is the base structure.

No doubt they would have had an apoplexy of some sort.

Daily Horoscope for January 1

Sagittarius

Happy New Year, Saggitarius! Despite the headache, your motivation level is high today, setting a trend for the rest of the year. You'll be surrounded by relatives and friends all year and will work passionately to help them, as you do. Things go smoothly today, and you're absorbed with the duties of new year. Be careful that you don't neglect your own health, though. You can't help others if you're run down.
