I'm a 21 year old black female who moved to San Antonio last year. Its a nice place and the people are friendly. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of the hispanics/mexicans here use the N word as if there were nothing wrong with it. I apologize if I'm using "hispanic" in the wrong context, its always confused me, but I think you know what I mean. I'll meet people and everything will be going along fine... all of a sudden out of nowhere they use the N word, then look confused when they see that i'm offended. First of all, I realize that we all have freedom of speech. Thats the great thing about this country. I'm not saying that no one should have the right to use that word, i'm just curious as to why anyone would use it, especially in the presence of a black person. The hispanics I've seen use it don't really seem racist, which is even more confusing. Some of you will say "well black people say it, so why can't we?" With all due respect, thats like saying "well black people kill black people, so why can't we?" The majority of blacks don't use that word to describe themselves anymore than a mexican uses the word "sp*c" or "wetb*ck" to describe themselves. You'll always find people who do certain things, but it doesn't make it right... and it isn't an excuse to do the same. Personally, i'd never use a racial slur at all, but to each their own. If you and your hispanic family/friends want to use the N word in the privacy of your homes, thats one thing... but when making a new black friend you shouldn't assume that we use the N word, before you even get to know us. Even hispanic rappers like Fat Joe, Pitbull, and Daddy Yankee say it. Then again, I can't really say anything about rappers, because unlike the majority of black people, the majority of rappers DO use it. So give me some insight. Thanks! =)

One point I forgot to make is that even though some of you have African blood, you still aren't black, and you have not had the same struggles we have. Even so, I don't believe anyone (including my people) should use that word without discretion.

They are also the most ignorant as you can see by the post from the Mexican known as "Jose M." His post says it all. What a pity.

I have read most of your rants and raves and have come to the conclusion that you are about as bright as a six watt light bulb in a bucket of shit. You talk down to a great race of people and if anyone should have pity, it should be you for being so biased against the Hispanic Race!

Perhaps you can enlighten me as to the accomplishments of this "great race of people." And don't give me that old rah rah about the "great Aztec and Mayan people"; I want to know what Mexico has accomplished in the last 50 years. The Mexican people are subserviant and have no backbone. It seems they are content to live a life of poverty and illiteracy, a life of illnesses and drug wars and corrruption. What is their answer? Oh, I forgot, sneak into the U.S. "for a better life" instead of taking a stand and working to improve their own country. I guess right now, millions of Mexicans are putting knives under their beds to "cut the fever" of the swine flu and drinking potions of weeds seeking relief. I'll bet the curanderos are really busy curing the flu with lotions and potions; the pitiful part is that their patients will follow their treatment plan. Mexicans - a truly intelligent cultural, progressive race of people. VIVA MEXICO!

Not all black people but the gangster mexicans gangster life came with us. So my best guess is monkey see monkey do or in this case monkey hear monkey say.

Now your being racial and calling black people monkeys? I am really offended by this, I hope your daughter marries one and then she will be black by injection.

I assume because 'none blacks' hear it so often in rap songs. They feel as if this is how we as black people see ourselves. I've never used the word to address any black person in my life. Yet, people believe because of my skin color, I must be down with the current slang trends! Um,not!!! It doesn't matter the culture of the people that choose to use the N word. It's all about what's in style/what's kool. For now the N word is the down A** word of the day. Thanks to rap stars popularizing the term. Here's what I'd like to know. Why do some BM call themselves the N word, but then get mad if someone of a different ethnicity refer to them as such?

VIVA MEXICO! fyi....Mexicans and Mexican-Americans are 2 different types of people. i agree with you on what has mexico accomplished the last 50 years. which is nothing because everyone just looks out for themselves in that country, its a "robin hood" country, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. unless you become a drug cartel, which seem to be protected, or more powerful then the govt. But if you want, i can start naming Hispanics or Latinos that have had great accomplishments/contributions in the last 50 years.

I think the question you should ask yourself is why the "N" word needs to be used at all, that includes all races.

Uhm not always so ,, I am usually regarded here as the quiet pleasant one but last year after my 5000 verbal accosting by a mexican in public,, I told her to f*ck off and she asked to me to repeat that which I did and asked if she'd like to do something about it ....... she couldnt of course and prceeded to call 100 relatives to come help her on the phone .. some actually showed up at the mall in Corpus and they just stared at me ... these were 20 somethings , I am in my 40's but obviously involved in the bike culture , she could see I was not a goody two shoes by any stretch ... she just shook her fat a$$ at me as she walked off with all her relatives.......... Jackie is right ,, sorry,, but as a white born and raised in Corpus Christi and cannot tell you how many times I have been on the receiving end of racist, downright MEAN crap from these people.... I dont have these problems with blacks at all.

Hispanic refers to a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, from Mexican to Puerto Rican, to Cuban and Spaniards. Just like Anglo can mean English, Irish, Scottish or any other "white" culture. From what is written here, Hispanics are getting attacked without reason. For the mistake of a few, we are all being verbally bashed. I am American, because, like you, I was born in the United States, but of Mexican descent. Jackie, you are an ignorant person. You should grab a history book and read it. It will enlighten you to the fact that white people also migrated to the US from other countries. What you said, would be like me judging all white people because a select few are stuck in trailer parks living off of welfare, killing their kids like Andrea Yates. But that would be an unfair judgement to pass. Just because there is a poor, crazy white woman, doesn't mean, all are the same. Just like there are racist white people, there are racist hispanics, and racists black people. Everybody is different. Just because you are ignorant, doesn't mean all people of your race are ignorant. Curious wrote "One point I forgot to make is that even though some of you have African blood, you still aren't black, and you have not had the same struggles we have" if we have African blood, how does that not make us Black? I don't use the N word, I never would. But, kids everywhere do use it, I'm not denying it, but I don't believe most use as a racial slur. They don't understand that it is politcally incorrect to use it. I have young brothers, who know better than to use that word. And they don't use it, because we have taught them right from wrong. Most people who use it were never taught right from wrong, kind of like Jackie.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the metaphor of a "crucible" or "(s)melting pot" was used to describe the fusion of different nationalities, ethnicities and cultures. It was used together with concepts of America as an ideal republic and a "city upon a hill" or new promised land. It was a metaphor for the idealized process of immigration and colonization by which different nationalities, cultures and "races" (a term that could encompass nationality, ethnicity and race) were to blend into a new, virtuous community, and it was connected to utopian visions of the emergence of an American "new man". The exact term "melting pot" came into general usage in 1908, after the premiere of the play The Melting Pot by Israel Zangwill. Prior to Zangwill, the first use in American literature of the concept of immigrants "melting" into the receiving culture are found in the writings of J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur. In his Letters from an American Farmer (1782) Crevecoeur writes, in response to his own question, "What then is the American, this new man?" that the American is one who "leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the government he obeys, and the new rank he holds. He becomes an American by being received in the broad lap of our great Alma Mater. Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labors and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world." “ "…whence came all these people? They are a mixture of English, Scotch, Irish, French, Dutch, Germans, and Swedes... What, then, is the American, this new man? He is neither a European nor the descendant of a European; hence that strange mixture of blood, which you will find in no other country. I could point out to you a family whose grandfather was an Englishman, whose wife was Dutch, whose son married a French woman, and whose present four sons have now four wives of different nations. He is an American, who, leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds.... The Americans were once scattered all over Europe; here they are incorporated into one of the finest systems of population which has ever appeared." − J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, Letters from an American Farmer. ”
