I have a son who is 21, he was diagnosed with adhd at 4 and asbergers at 11. He has not been on mess and is getting worse, he doesn't work, he smokes pot and he lives, eats and breathes tagging. He is a good artist and very smart. He is starting to have very violent dreams and we are scared. Does anyone know of any free counselling in san Antonio? CHCS will not take him due to the asbergers. His fiance and I are at the end of the line.
Have you tried ABA? Look for a therapist that will do this therapy...good luck!

My son had a phase similar when he was younger. He is a typical black and white thinker and learned very quickly which behaviors got which reactions. I made the same mistake of sending him to his safe haven when he was in trouble. Don't do it. It's a reward. The trick I learned was be firm, be specific about what you want him to do and explain, explain, explain. This is right, this is wrong, this is why i need help cleaning, these are the thing that want you to do. In the beginning mine would just do the opposite of whatever i said. So, I started making him sit there until he completed whatever I asked. Timeouts rarely happened, if it did, he sat at the table. I would ask if he knew what he did wrong, if not I would explain and he was still required to complete the task. If he did know, timeout was a little longer and I would explain that he lost part of the day by throwing a fit instead of finishing and being able to play. Losing a prized possession for the day also worked. But don't hit him with multiple punishments for one wrong doing. Keep your cool because he will test you in the beginning. Don't make idle threats. If you give him a warning and consequence, follow through. I am firm but also affectionate and fair. I explain things in simple terms and post simple rules around the house. He gets praised often, he earns an allowance and told what a great job he is doing when I catch him do it. And yes, praise him when punishment is done and the task is complete. It's hard sometimes but he has to learn new behaviors so it wont be easy for him either.:)

Hello...I toally agree with you about the part that peolpe think we need to "discipline" our children...have you found anything that works. My son is 6, Aspergers, ADHD, ODD....has a terrible potty mouth..words we don't use in our home. And a very mean temper. Timeouts dont work...and he appreciate being sent to his room...any suggestions?

I live in San Antonio and have a 7 yr old daughter with ADHD. Her school psychologist suggests further testing, as se exhibits symptoms that are more in line with Aspergers (lack of communication, difficulty with making eye contact, socially awkward, yet highly intelligent). Currently, she is taking Focalin XR for her ADHD. Daily living is difficult because she needs constant reminders on things and often day dreams. The lack of eye contact has most of her teachers believing they're being ignored. She performs academically well (in fact, she reads, writes, and spells well above the first grade level; her vocabulary is more that of a fourth or fifth grade student). I get what most parents feel; those who don't understand will judge and label my child as "spoiled". I can assure you that she is not. I take disciplinary action when she misbehaves, yet she continues to misbehave. Often times, she'll tell me she understands, only to make the same mistake the very next day. You can only imagine how frustrating this is. I never thought anything was wrong with her until we had our second child who does NOT have ADHD nor Aspergers. My second one learns from her mistakes and doesn't do them again. I'm not sure if my first child is exhibiting attention-seeking behavior, but in any case, it has not been easy. Any advice? I am frustrated that I keep getting calls and emails from my child's teacher, stating that she keeps forgetting things, or (just recently) getting in trouble with both the bus driver and principal for not sitting down on the bus. Please let me know your thoughts.

most definately set up a meeting with the IEP team to discuss why these things are happening and if your child is working with an ABA Therapist, get them to do a FUBA.

Brent Evans in San Antonio has a good reputation for group therapy of kids with poor socialization skills. My 17 year old son with ADD and Aspergers has been at the Achievers Center for Education located at University Methodist Church for 4 years and the improvement in his social and academic skills has been nothing short of miraculous. When he first enrolled his academic and social skills were poor and he had no friends. The enrollment is only 23 students from 6-12th grade and the student/teacher ratio is low, so lots of one-on-one instruction is given. They also have a ZERO tolerance policy for bullying.
we too have an 17 yr old with ADHD and Aspergers.i would like the address of this school.
