Why would board members.. need to travel?

Fla is on the bottom of the list nationally..why not just pay the teachers more and educate our children???

I hope the Sentinel keeps on this story. Too many school administrators are abusing their positions and the peoples' trust by treating themselves on the taxpayers' dime to expensive meals and stays in plush hotels. This has got to stop. Oh, they'll try to tell you it's not tax money paying for all this ... it's grant money. Well, where did the grant money come from? These people are doing nothing more than treating themselves to mini-vacations using funds that could certainly be put to better uses, like improving student services and professional development for teachers. Here's my proposal: Fire an administrator and hire two teachers.

Any person voted into office should have a guideline on travelling. Like councilmen and women, cutting the budget should be easy....no group travelling, no travelling with the family, you send one person, let the person document on camera, let them stay in a low cost room. The only thing is, because it comes from our taxes, somewhere along the line they think its theirs to spend as they want.

You guys are about clueless. Lavish meals? LOL. The ignorance of these posters is amazing. Have you heard of per diem? Cities, counties, schools, etc all have them. Since when does a 25 dollar meal equal lavish? Pure amazing at the intelligence of the posters here. WOW!

Looks like an administrator is doing the same thing again that got her in trouble up in Indiana! The board should look into this right now!

This sounds like the same occurance that happened in Knightstown, Indiana two years ago with the current Director of Federal Compensatory Education. Lake County School board needs to check their employees resumes and past work historys very carefully.

2 small problems with your post.#1. Most conference fees include meals, banquets, and other goodies as part of the registration fee. And of course, their is the fact that the $54.00 travel per diem is much higher than your cited $25 per day, which in and of itself is excessive and totally unjustified.
#2. In the internet era and video conferencing etc., most if not all of out-of-district travel should be eliminated. Of course, there is the last pesky detail, that if the $1.4 million dollars of budgeted travel would be reallocated to hiring more teachers and actually accomplishing the goals of the class-size amendment, rather than being paid "lip-service" in far too many schools, 34 additional CLASSROOM teachers could be hired. Of course, budgetary frugality always starts from the bottom-up.

The problem to me sounds like this is steered towards one person- The Director of Federal Compensatory Education. This person has been in trouble before with a school corporation up in Knightstown Indiana two years ago, resulting in the termination of her job before she moved to Davenport, FL. and took the new job with Lake County Schools. One might have thought that she would have learned her lesson the first time around.

CAD needs to check his/her facts. This person was not terminated from their job in IN. She 'retired' after getting the Lake County job. That said, she was certainly coming under scrutiny at the time she left with respect to possible misuse of grant money from a nonprofit she did work for. There were also unanswered questions about grant administration at the school district, and after she left, the district had to pay back something like $50,000 because things were not done correctly.

Jefro Bodinarino- She was given a choice of retiring or being terminated. She also had to pay back thousands of dallars to the state. She had no choice but to leave the school corp. as she had no job to continue on. Just read the articles in our local paper.

dca - I have reviewed the articles in your local paper. They never reported that this person was given a choice between retiring or being terminated. They simply said she had retired/resigned -- in other words, the facts.
