... Not necessarily in that order and I have stated this elsewhere, being new to this, but is anyone other than me astonished and perhaps even a bit troubled by the fact that if the postings on here constitute a representative sample, then roughly 90% of the people in this County spell at third grade level? God in his infinite wisdom created dictionaries but I fear that he overlooked us. Thy will be done. Ours is not to reason why.

I doubt that too many people are troubled by your observation. If you have read the threads, you would notice that only a certain few people actually post anything on this site. The majority of topix posters are just looking for trouble and a great number of them are more than likely intoxicated, welfare loosers that quit school in the third grade, and have no class.

I like topix and I'm not any of the above. But my town in Massachusetts does not post on it so I checked out Salyersville cause I spent my summers there. Topix is a great concept on community information ( that is how I found out about the tornado the minute it hit) I'm determined to get my folks here in mass on our community forum and I'm hoping to change the threads that most post in Salyersville write as it is mostly gossip and mean. Lead by example is my motto.

From the observation of your spelling, I'd say your highest grade level was third or fourth grade! lol

Loosers is spelled LOSERS!! lol You're probably just grocery shopping at IGA, or working for YOUR Welfare Check! lol lol I've been told, after recieving Welfare, for so long, that one has to work on a program, so many hours per week, in order to keep recieving Benefits!

I'm not too worried about my spelling. I'm more concerned that my nursing degree made me 110,000 dollars this year.

Look, my post was partly tongue-in-cheek and I am aware that all of us misspell from time to time. But it's obvious to me that many who post on here are very close to being functionally illiterate. This does concern me. We worry about the education of our children, but this seems to manifest itself mostly in the form of attacking those in the school system.
It's equally clear to me that many who never learned to spell aren't dumb by any stretch. I learned long ago not to equate intelligence with education. Magoffin County is in the poorest Congressional District in the country and many times vies with Indian Reservations for the least educated. I'm not attacking anyone; it's obvious to me that there is a problem and it needs to be addressed.
I admire your achievements and salary but if you are unable to spell (which i seriously doubt) you achieved this in spite of this fact rather than because of it.

You are very correct and sorry I got aggravated! What does that mean that you are in the poorest congregational district and the Indian thing?

Actually I put myself through college. I grew up with a mother who lost her husband ( my father) when I was 6 years old. My siblings were 7, 8, and 11. My mother worked her butt off to keep food on our table but unfortunately later in my high school years she turned to prescription drugs. When I graduated high school I just knew I had to get out of my house so I applied to college and was accepted by only one! I left and never went back. My older brother is a meth addict and my other brother is a homeless alcoholic who might be dead as we speak. My mother is still popping her pills. But me, I worked through college took loans out that took me 10 years to pay off. I'm married to a wonderful man and I have a daughter who is in 6 th grade. I am a firm believer that it is just as much my responsibility to educate my daughter as it is the schools. But it starts at the home. I check that my daughters homework is done and I am just glad that I fostered her to want to do good in school wether she is smart or not. She wants to get good grades and that is what's important. It's never too late to go to college. Many of the women I work with went to nursing school later in life.

I love Salyersville and if I wasn't raising a school aged daughter I would move back in a heart beat! But until she graduates I'm stuck here.

Actually you are right... Anyone can get a college degree. I was a C student, I had no financial or emotional support from my mother. But I wanted a better life for myself and went out and got it. I was a C student in college too. As long as you go to class and do your homework you will pass.
