Does anyone have problems with them? Their system is the craziest I have ever seen! Went 2 turn my water on 2day, didn't work, so I called & asked them if they were working on the lines or something. She says no your water was cut off & I'm like my bill was due on the 10th & I paid it on the 4th, IN FULL. She says I have $25 that was from a late fee before. I never received a bill on this, how did I even know I had 2 pay it? So anyways, I go up 2day & pay the $25 PLUS another $25 to turn it back on. Asked her while I was there; So why hadn't they just put it on my next bill so I wouldn't have had 2 pay the reconnect fee? She says they don't do that anymore.

So people, even if you owe only $5 (AND if u don't know u owe it), they will come cut your water off, so u will have 2 pay that $25 reconnect fee! This 2 me is just a SCAM to get that extra $25 & is so crazy & down right theif-like if u ask me!!

Anyways, wanted 2 let anyone know if u wanna complain about anything or have questions, they do have a board meeting in the same building on March 9 @ 12 noon, it IS open 2 the citizens.

I will agree with you on this as well that it is a scam about how they conduct their business with the people of Smyth County. Granted I may forget to pay a bill once in a blue moon, but all they need to do it add it to the next bill before deciding to cut your water off or send you out another bill after the actual due date to warn you.

The water gods must be hungry.
They're a crafty outfit; why warn you to pay money when they can steal (if someone takes something of yours that they aren't entitled to take, it doesn't make any difference if they call it policy or piracy) a little extra?
Some of my friends on Cardwell Town Rd are still dissed about the sewer deal. They were told that adding the sewer wouldn't cost any more than the water did. So the water board raised the cost of water and then added the same amount for the sewer; like if you were paying twenty dollars for water, they raised it to forty dollars and then charged another forty for the sewer which brings the total bill from twenty dollars to eighty dollars. I don't know who cobbled that little trick together, but they must be a master thief.
The folk up there still say they were told and they read in the paper that the Smyth County was receiving a grant to have the sewer installed, but now the county says the customers have to repay the money to the county.
Mind you, I don't swear by that, but some reliable folk have told me the tale.

I live n Pump Log Hollow, right next 2 Cardwell town. Sewer deal?? Some deal, my water & sewer runs at $92 a month. BUT get this - they NEVER have fixed my lines the right way, I've called, family has called, NOTHING has been done. I've bought $100s in pipes, glue, etc. & fixed my own lines, yes me a woman!! I was taught if u want something done right do it yourself! No, it's not exactly as it should be, lol, but I done pretty good considering. I've got my pipes running on top of the ground, but they do work, b 4 I was diggin' ditches for the sewer 2 run around my house & with no help from Smyth County, I had 2 do something!

I just got my bill yesterday, I had a penalty of $4.39 when I called, I was told they don't give refund or credit. I pay my bill thru a web bill pay at my bank. So I looked up my bill. It was mailed by web bill pay so that the water/sewer dept would receive it by 2/9/2010. That was the date on my check. The lady at the water dept said it was not received until 2/11/2010!!! Well, it didn't clear my bank until 2/17/2010, who know when the water dept made the deposit. Should one day make a difference?? It was snowing that week, so did they work every day?? Did someone pick up the mail and process it every day??? Maybe I'm just over reacting..... Any thoughts??
and yes I have water and sewer....

Oh my, we all need to complain to our supervisors. This is totally out of hand. The water/sewer department needs to answer to someone. None of the other county offices are this bad. I can't believe they talk to people the way they do. Most all utility bills have pay XX amount by this date and add XX after a certain date, with a grace period in between. But the water/sewer dept has no grace period, no exceptions, and no refunds or credits. What does this say about our county and the department?? The Commonwealth of VA has a built in Grace Period (5, 7, or 10 days) depending upon the loan or service, So how come the water/sewer dept don't observe this ????? Everyone needs to call their supervisor....

If ur bill is not paid in full by the 10th they add $25.00 to ur next bill. U have to have it paid by the 15th or they cut it off. If u have a rental house they mail u the bill and u have to take it to ur renters. They are f**kn lazy! If the renters don't pay the bill u have to. U are held responsible for someone elses bill. Call ur mayor, deligate, congressman keep calling and eventually they'll do them like they did the power company. If they're rude to u be rude back. They s**t doesn't smell any better than mine.

Perhaps the citizens of Saltville should refer to your mayor on the policies to do with the Smyth County Water Authority, after all he is the attorney advising them.

if y'all really want to get the water departments goat then everyone should call this week and ask for a copy of last years consumer confidence report.

the water department is a tricky issue as yes the board of supervisors gives the water department it's authority but the water foreman is charged with the day to day operation of the department and the county administrator is over the water foreman...convoluted? ewe betcha. i would get a hold of michael carter over on the hill and complain.

follow this link for what it is http://www.epa.gov/safewater/ccr/index.html

to be brief the public water systems have to provide to all of their customers by july 1 of every year a copy of the ccr...sometimes called drinking water quality reports.

as to who wrote it i'd say somebody on the staff.

Been a while since I had any comments but the water problem is one of interest.
Your mayor is indeed the COUNTY Water and Sewer attorney but he don't get a vote as to how the place is run.
Most water systems do have a grace and notification period because they know every user sometimes has a little difficulty and needs a break.
Thomas Bridge for example, does have a system where users are are given a 5 day grace period after the bill is due where the users pay a small fee after the due date is missed. They also send out a "cut off " notice giving the date on which the service will be cut off if payment is not received. This is usually 10 days.
The county could do something similar if they really wanted to. Their excuse is it takes too much time to follow up on these things. Truth is they just don't want to do it. They have all records on a computer and it takes only a few key strokes to pull up a list of delinquent accounts
and the computer automatically prints out the notice for mailing. If you ever have a chance to watch this office work you will see what the problem really is....lack of good management.
Whats your best move? A bunch of dissatisfied customers attend one of the Water and Sewer
Committee meetings and tell them of your problems. They have influence over the full Board of Supervisors and can help with changing the broken syatem. Call the county office and ask the receptionist when the committee meets next. Its open to the public.
It'll help if you keep asking why they can't do something. The Board may not know how badly the citizens are being treateed.

Yeah, but good for you; most women wouldn't even have tried.
They were going to put Junior Fryes sewer lines running uphill until he caught it and raised a howl about it.
I thought the new sewer system was a good idea when I first heard about it; it'd keep the environment a little cleaner...When I saw the first bill, I was flattened. I've lived all over the place, and I've never seen such fees for water, sewage, and electricity as this area has. Somebody somewhere must be wearing diamond slippers...
Senator Webb's website is webb.gov , if I'm not mistaken. We ought to petition and then send it to our Congressman and Senator, as well as the county folk.

I live in Saltville, but pay county taxes too. It used to kill me, when I would go into the Saltville Town Hall and there would be Mr. Neal sitting there talking to Amy M. instead of out working like he was getting paid to do. He did this quite often! He was supposed to be out reading county water meters!

What happened to the big Gov. grant to put in the sewer lines. Like all the other grants? Can't find the paper trail.

I do know that when they done the sewer line through Allison's Gap, there was a large sign sitting at the edge of the round brick church that said it was funded by a government grant. But I can almost bet 100% of the folks around that part would say "SOME GRANT" including myself!!
