Does anyone know how to get to White Rock and Red Rock? I have heard that there is a road somewhere up Lick Skillet that goes up on White Rock but is the road still accessable by car? I was told that there was some kind of "artists camp" up there years ago and there were actually several buildings up there. I had never heard that before. I have heard that you can actually drive out on the cliff. Also is there any road to access Red Rock? Just wondering, I've always wanted to go up there but I could never figure out how to get there.

The road through Lick Skillet led up to Red Rock, which at one time had a high class art camp up there. The road is so grown up that hiking or possibly horse would be the only access. There is an access to White Rock, but I'm not sure how.

You can get to Whtie Rock several different ways, depending on how much you want to hike. The easiest way is probably to go into the Clinch Mountain WMA to "Painter/Panther Lick" (same place-depending on which one you call it) hike to the top and go NE to White Rock. You can also come in from Flat Top--thats a nice hike. Or you can come to the base through Barbrow or Pump Log 'Hollar' or Cardwelltown to Surber's Cove. Not sure how accessable Surber's Cove is these days though. You can also get to Red Rock from Pather Lick, just go SE from the gate. Not sure about the art camp, maybe a pot or moonshine camp or these days a meth camp, once they're high they just think they are artists?

Call Hop, he can give you directions.

I read the story walk across America by Peter Jenkins. Peter states that he came across a mountain man by the name of Homer Davenport who lived atop of red rock cove. Is the land still in his familys name? What ever happened to his little log home? I truly enjoyed reading his book. And all the interesting People Peter came across while walking across America. He talked about how Homer took him in and fed him dinner. I would like to visit Saltsville someday.

Dixie1, Thank you for the invite. In the Book walking across America, i found Homer Davenport to be inspirational. To raise a family who had no electricity, no running water and live off his Land in a small Log Cabin was inspiring. We all can learn from those who don't have much in the way of materialistic things. The same things that we take for granted. What's on top of red rock cove? I suppose his little Log Cabin has since been torn down? Is red rock cove part of the appalaition trail? If anyone out there has any information to any of my questions, please respond. Thank you.

It was my pleasure to have spent a few hours chatting with ol Homer a time or 3. Lots of fun. He was truly a spirit of the wild.
