(It was standing room only at Tuesdays IID workshop) The special workshop was held in Condit Auditorium to explain the Districts planned Equitable Distribution of Water.
Last November the District Board declared a supply/demand imbalance for 2008. That triggered the Equitable Distribution beginning January 1st. The District now has to put together the Distribution plan. Tuesday night the Districts consulting team, led by economist Rodney Smith, and including Doctor John Eckhardt and Attorney David Osias, outline a Straight Line Delivery plan. According to the plan, each grower would be allotted 5.13 acre feet of water for each acre farmed. They would have the option of using that amount, or rejecting it. If more water was needed, they would be able to purchase it from a water bank. The water bank, or last resort storage bank, would be water rejected by other growers. Purchases also could be made from growers who purchase water, but cant use it all. Purchases and sales would have to remain within the IID service area. Tuesday the plan was outlined in detail. The District Board said it would be presented to a special 15 member panel appointed to make recommendations on the plan. At least one more public workshop would be held before any plan is adopted. The Local Farm Bureau also presented a equitable distribution plan approved by their Board of Directors. Farm Bureau Executive Director Nicole Rothfliesch presented the Farm Bureau Plan, and asked that it be given equal consideration.
