Everyone is saying she "reduced" the sentence. That's bull. There was a flaw or something in the original trial so she REsentenced him. If you look at other home invasion cases in the last 10 years you won't find many double digits. 20 is sufficient.

Other home invasion cases with rape, assault, etc. have received less prison time. This whole case is garbage and by no means should result in the sentence it did - not by a long shot. Talk about a conspiracy, many the witnesses in this case had obviously no regard for the fact that perjury is a crime.

I went to school and was befriended several times by Chad Austin in Concord NH, back in the early 90's. He was, and still is an arrogant trouble maker and NOT highly intelligent. He spent some of his high school years in an alternative school before dropping out. He was arrogant due to his father being in law enforcement. He had the perception that his father could get him out of anything. Not this time Chad....

He could be intelligent despite a lack of education. He looks and sounds like a total loser. Hopefully he'll grow up some day, he's not getting out until he's well into his fifties. Like so many selfish and foolish young people, he threw his life away. He can start to live in his 50s..wow, that sucks, but that's the law

....The kid is seriously smart!! Most people in that situation would just wet their pants and cry looking at the time he was. At least he had the nerve to defend himself!

Kid was a punk. Came off as an arrogant ass. Should have gotten max and it should have stayed at the max. If it was you he was holding the gun to, you said the same thing.

It seems that several of those who made comments don't know enough about the story, nor the individual to warrant making those comments..

This is so much bulls*it--I know because it almost happened to my son. Most cops seem to think a they are about the law and coverup is common in these cases. Then they want to know why they are refered to as pigs.

Actually after knowing Chad for over 10 years now... you guys know nothing, the trial was BS he shouldn't of gotten a quarter of the sentence, the cops couldn't prove 90% of what they testified to, I actually didn't become friends with him til during the trial when i saw how screwed he was being by the law!!!

From watching the special on TV about the incident and trial, and even after reading a few articles, I think that he should have gotten a lesser sentence because I don't think had any intention of hurting the boys, and I don't think he wanted to hurt Hardy either. Yes he deserves jail time for the robbery and the car chase and firing at the cops, but he made a valid point that the cops weren't about to *not* shoot him, and that seeking shelter was an attempt as survival. And yes, he deserves jail time for home invasion as well. But I don't think he kidnapped the boys.

I hope that when he gets free, he can live a good, peaceful and lawful life.

Correction: "...seeking shelter was an at* survival."

Also, it's not like he was denying his involvement, or that he was pleading pure innocence. He was denying that his intent in the incidents was murderous.

It's no mystery that he screwed up, but I'm not convinced that he's maliciously violent.

Don't any of you have kids? If somone barged into my house with a gun and terrified my family like that I would hope to see them rot. This guy is a menace and should stay locked up. I guess as always, someone really has to die in order to get justice.

I am a penpal of chad's and have ben writing him for a year. He made a big mistake and everyone wants to degrade him for it. No one was hurt except for him. If the police were shooting at you you would seek shelter too.I think he's suffering enough and I think he is very sweet. By the way he just had a birthday. Murderers and rapists get out faster. So that's B.S. Thanks for a little compassion.

ur a tool .. i seriously doubt he's lived a life beyond the sufferings and drawbacks of many americans who still manage to not rob banks, shoot at cops and hold a unsuspecting family at gunpoint.. why would i care to know this guy? isn't it said that it's tribulation that test the character of men .. so based on that and assuming you know of some deep dark secret to the huge sufferings poor little chad went thru he failed when tested.. he's a loser ... and if you think anything different so are you ..

Chad Austin deserved life without possibility for kidnapping and endangering those children. Attempted murder of a corrections officer another life sentence Then you can tack on the shooting at police and evading. Then tack on home invasion. Too bad he wasn't killed.

The sentence is absolutely baffling. Austin was a stumble away from killing one if not more of the hostages. No matter how one feels about law enforcement, there is absolutely no justification to take small children hostage.

Individuals get more time under the three strikes/you're out rule for minor possession yet an individual who mentally tortured a child gets a smack on the hand.
