Donnis Donohue should be a one term mayor in Salinas. The city manager David Mora is on his way out but he ruined Salinas and only cared, in the end, about raising salaries. The window dressing of building a better Salinas is just that, window dressing, nothing more. The people who care about the community have grown apathetic, I know because this is how I feel about Salinas. A nice town once, has moved into the realm of world class dump of a city, economically driven by corruption and violent crime.

This is no lie i am Rene Ortiz is my brother. And i believe that my brother will not do this type of crime yes he is being convicted of murder but my brother has alot more positive ambitions in his life than sitting in a jail cell awaiting a crime he did not do. I live in las vegas neveada but we go down to salinas frequenlty to visist our family members and from what i seen my brother was living a good life before all this happend. I hope the whole police department reads this cause they got the wrong person but they dont listen to anything what other people say. My brother Rene Ortiz is innocent!!!!!!!!

When will this senseless violence end? I grew up in Salinas, and it is not the same place it was 30
years ago. We can all make a difference. We can make our city better. People have to come forward with information, if they see a violent crime happen! We should care about our neighbors! We should not live in fear! Young people deserve a better life in the city of Salinas! This will not be an easy task, however, we must start to do something, rather than let our city be ruined by the continued violence.

So I guess the Mayor and the City Manager should have stopped those three sixteen year olds from walking the streets at night. Place blame where it squarely belongs. It belongs on the shoulders of the mothers and fathers. They are the ones that should not have let those kids walk around the streets and night. They are the ones that should be searching these kids rooms and throwing out all their gang crap. Kids don't roll out of bed one day and decide to be a gang member. They start by hanging around these losers, then dressing the part, and finally acting the part. Parents that don't see that activity are clearly blind or are willing to take excuses like, "I like the 49ers" or "Flaco has those three dots on his hand because it stands for my crazy life." If your searching for blame, it's not with the Mayor or the City Manger. You need to look no further then home

If your brother is innocent, the court system will provide that verdict

This comment is to the person who says their brother the murderer is innocent. Your brother is innocent huh? He is living a good life huh? Well then why has he been arrested for murder? Why does your brother have an X4 tattoo by his left eye? I hope your brother rots in his cell while living his good life.

The People need to take control of there city.People out here in Ca. are to soft and bless them, to civilized.Back in the day,Men of the town got together and exterminated threats to the good people!!!Nowadays taking the law in your own hands has serious ramifications, but it will take a man who is feed up with cowards fighting for nothing to lead a mission that few people are willing to do, but history will reflect this person , soon !

I know the parents of Jose Soto and my condolences go out to the parents and siblings. Are they good parents? Absolutely. Were they perfect parents? Obviously no one is. They cared about not only their own children, but yours and mine, too. These very parents put a lot of their own blood, sweat and tears to make this town a better place. Last June, these parents coordinated the Rapper's Delight that was held at Natividad Creek Park to reach out to those who run the streets and are in gangs. They provided an outlet for these people to showcase their talents, connect them with area churches and services so that these young people can make better, educated choices with their lives. If these young people do not have the support in their home, there is only so much a community can do. Our community leaders are actively involved in searching for opportunities to reach out to these young people and they are seeking out people like Jose Soto's parents to allow them to reach out and help our community. If you would go to the city meetings, you will hear them discuss these topics and options but it takes people like you and me and donations from everyone to make these things happen.
If you want to make this town a better place, start getting more involved and stop pointing the finger to who is to blame. We are ALL to blame and myself included, need to become more informed and more involved. OUR CITY WANTS PEOPLE TO COME FORWARD with our ideas and our burdens to reach out to others. Please do your part in making this happen. Find out when these meetings happen. Get involved in your children's schools. Help spread the word about the wonderful parenting classes available at the Parent Center in the Salinas Adult school to educate the parents and provide them with the tools to help their children succeed in life.
You and I have responsibilities. I know for a fact that the parents of Jose Soto have been active participants in making this town a better place. It is very unfortunate that it had to be their son and if he was doing things that he shouldn't have done or making wrong choices, that was his own choice and not his parent's choice. They raised him in church and he knew right from wrong. He saw his parents in action but unfortunately, there is so much magnetic pull towards the gangs that most hispanic males don't stand a chance here if they are not in one.
Stiffer penalties and more youth activities need to be provided by our leaders.
