Why isn't Salinas (or perhaps Monterey County) petitioning to get a state of emergency declared because of all these teen shootings, and get the National Guard in to help with the gang issues?

Until families are held responsible for their offspring/family members, and shame is brought back into public consciousness this activity will continue. We are witnessing the results of piss-poor parenting. Has anyone seen the clothes these kids are wearing to school! pants belted around the knees, oversized shirts and shaved heads! where do these kids get this "style"? from gangsta hip hop videos and "noise" (I wont call it music because it is most definately not!) That piss-poor parents would allow their kids to go to school like this is amazing. We will see posters to my comments defending gangsta rap hip hop and defend the right for these little pukes to "express themselves" with their gangsta attire and these will be the folks that promulgate the violent phenomenon that we are subjected to on a daily basis. The attitude of these kids is just as apalling as their clothes, they pass by my house as I am getting my mail and give me a death stare and say "supp" I am at leat 35 years older than they! no respect for society! I was raised to respect my elders in the community, To have a sense of honor for how my family was viewed in the community, a sense of shame . We have none of these traits today. A television channel broadcast from city hall teaching values and morals to the city, playing 24 hours a day and highlighting student athelets, thespians, FFA, student artists, Working moms and dads gving examples of stopping their kids from wearing gang clothing out the door or even from having it in their closet in the first place! examples of families having their kids listen to the classics i.e. Bach, Bethoven,Rachmaninof, Tchaikovsky,Bach e.t.c. instead of li'l Wayne, Snoop Doggy Dog, Jay Z...think about it people, he channel woul also demonstrate how "trashy and low class" it is to park on your lawn, spit in public, to hold your crotch as you walk, to show a dress code that respects society i.e. we dont want to see your filthy undershorts pulled out of your oversize trousers, the channel would also encourage immigrants to speak or atempt to speak english while in public markets, this would go a long long long way to assimilation and would impress the hell out of me, even a simple yes or no or I dont know would prompt me to help and to know these people legal or not., yes the city needs a tv channel to show a mom in a store purchasing gang clothes for a kid, of filming gangsters on the street so the community can see them, we must not be affraid to put them in the light, to uncover them so the entire community can subject them to public scorn it is all we have to combat their attraction to younger kids. Athelets and musicians public figures, council members and regular moms and dads can appear on segments and give parenting advice..think people.

Commonsense58,

Voltaire said it best..."Common Sense is not so common..."

I agree with your post; but what you are saying is that you want an entire culture changed. The sad fact is that there is little or no assimilation going on, at least the way you and I want it to go.

The assimilation is actually going reverse of what we want. The non-violent, non-gangster, respectful people in some areas of this county are not accepting of the gang culture. In those areas, there is very little gang crime.

The gang culture is spreading, it is not just in Salinas. It is spreading first into those areas of the county that allow and condone, or ignore and accept, that culture. In this county, it is mostly a Hispanic gang culture that goes up and down the Valley. It is spreading into Hispanic neighborhoods and communities, and is present anywhere there is a significant population of Hispanics. They are bringing their culture here, along with the violence that comes with it.

The slow changes in this county, over the last 25 years or so, represent exactly the opposite of a culture change that you and I want. It is getting worse, not better. A different culture is here, it is spreadng, and the wholesale return to our culture and values is going away. The same exact thing happened in East L.A., and now it is happening here. White flight is accelerating the change, just as in East LA.

All the little programs in the world are not going to stop this violence. As long as the government keeps trying to be mommy and daddy to these kids, it will fail. Throwing money at the issue is not a solution.

The Hispanic community, and especially the Catholic Church, are the only ones who can change this culture of violence. The needed change needs to come from within the Hispanic community, or it will fail. The Church needs to stop having a peace march every few months, and start educating their congregations about responsibility and parenting, and instill a moral obligation to take care of all those kids they are having. Aren't they tired of burying these young Hispanic kids yet? Aren't they tired of making the trips to prison to visit all these Hispanic gangsters that haven't been killed (yet?)

All Hispanic organizations that exist in this county to promote their social well being need to take a lead in this effort, along with the Church. Promote their own culture, but stress the non-violent, non-gang lifestyle. Do not preach tolerance of a hateful, violent culture that is killing young boys, which encourages force and violence. Demand that they do not tolerate criminal activity in their neighborhoods, they call the police when they see it, and they control their children and keep them out of criminal activity.

These social groups and the church's clients are in many cases undereducated and lack sophistication. The organizations that have the biggest impact on their lives is the Church and their social groups. The change must come from them.

It will be an uphill battle.

That doesn't read well...what I meant is that the clients of the social groups and the church are in many cases undereducated and lack sophistication."

Sorry.

What exactly is Dennis Donohue building together? He has presided over a sea of violence and most of his efforts have turned into party jokes, fasting, etc.

Then we have the current sheriff of Monterey county claiming he has done so much to stem violence in this area. Oh yeah? What has the current sheriff done? Buy ballistic panels for all the crown vics? Those are fairly standard now. Get an eye scanner at the jail (probably from a campaign donor) wow us some more.

The "leaders" including the top law enforcement officer in this county need to be voted out.

No more Donohue, no more Kanalakis. Send them packing they can then fast together while on vacation.

It is about time that our PC politicians pass a new category of gang crime laws in order to facilitate the breakup of this activity in our communities. No more gang colors, signs, graffiti, multiple person gatherings, or anything else. No tolerance any longer! And while you are at it, ENFORCE OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS!

The problem now is, the parents of kids born these days ARE the gang members!! Sorry, but the genie has been already let out of the bottle, and much harsher solutions are in store.

I'm not a Kannalakis supporter but the sheriffs office has nothing to do with gang violence. If law enforcement was able to take the gloves off and do their job, it might slow it down but it would not stop. Its the Parents who are mostly to blame. Its also the U.S. immigration policy. People, they are finding caves in mexico filled with hundreds of beheaded citizens and police officers inside. THANK YOU MEXICO.

To all of you complaining about the violence - what are YOU doing to help alleviate it? Are you mentoring anyone to try to show them a path without violence? Are you volunteering your time? Are you helping out the parents of these teens while those parents are working multiple jobs? Or are you just sitting in your armchair complaining?

It is a shame that this type of activity has to be happening in Salinas, young kids getting killed, and everyday you hear of this happening, these kids need to stop wearing these gang colors, clothing, and start dressing, half way decent. there parents need to stop buying them those baggy pants, and red / blue oversize clothing, and especially letting them out of the house with that type clothing, that is what is getting them killed. Now...what is the city council doing to stop this, what is the Mayor doing, and the chief of police, abosolutley nothing...nothing is being done. they talk, owe, we got grant money, and where does that grant money go to..lets see.. giving each other raises.Salinas needs to get rid of all those sitting on the city council, the Mayor, lets hope he is not elected again for a another term, get him out., he has done nothting good for this town, except, FAST>>the police need to start chasing down these animals. when you got 15 to 20 police cars going down the same street, instead of some one way and other another way, no you see them all following each other, no wonder they cant catch these gangster / killers, speeding off, driving all crazy. then they want witness / neighbors to tell what they saw. Council members Like Tony Barrera, Gloria Delarosa, Armenta, useless council members, they have the same snakes in there own home, Salinas needs to get rid of these useless council members, vote them out...out..

As nice as it would be for people to be able to help others with their kids it is a hard thing to do, for one many are busy making sure their children are growing up right and those parents who are in denial of how bad their kids are and what they are capable of will not allow someone to step in and try to teach their children they think they know better. Until parents are held accountable for their kids actions they will not wake up or until its too late and their child kills or is killed. My family came here because my father was a political prisoner and we came here to improve our lives not to try to corrupt another country to be like the one we ran from. I was in some trouble as a kid and my parents worked a lot but they were there to show me the way and make sure I became a respectible adult, and in my mind I felt I would fail them if I did end up being a gang banger or drug addict, they gave up so much to make sure we grew up right it would have been a slap in their face for me to fail. But most kids do not have that mentality they dont realize what their parents do for them and the sad part is a lot of parents do not understand what their kids are getting into. My take on this is if you cannot devote the time to raise a child right DO NOT HAVE ONE let alone 3-4 that you cannot take care of.

At this point, the best you can hope is that the killings are limited to gang on gang.

I'll be responsible for "MY" childrens morals, behavior, education, etc.

"YOU", go to to East Salinas, "YOU" mentor the teenage gang bangers, "YOU" help the parent/parents of teens.

Can "YOU" provide any factual proof the parent/parents of these gang bangers are working two jobs?

Now, are you just going to sit at your computer and "advise other people" that "THEY" should be responsible for the morals, behavior, education, etc. of other parents children?

Get real... Your hilarious!

You're right, in regards to parenting.

However, Donohue "IS" responsible for intentionally allowing Salinas to be a pro-illegal "sanctuary" city simply for the sake of "cheap" agricultural labor.

As Mayor, Donohue, and the City Council, are responsible for Public Safety. They are not providing it.

Instead, Donohue and the City Council are plain "guilty" of pandering to the ILLEGALS for the cheap AG. labor they provide, no matter how much crime/chaos comes along "with" the illegals and their cheap labor.

Donohue, and the City Council, simply ignore the gang bangers and the crime/chaos they create in Salinas until he, and the C.C. members are literally "forced" to take some kind of "token" action against them in a symbolic effort to show the public, "see" we are trying... It's simply B.S.

If they were genuinely trying, this gang banger B.S. would have ended long ago. And today, Salinas would not be filled with ignorant illiterate illegal alien parents who refuse to assimilate. And Salinas would not be over run with their anchor baby gang bangers and drug thugs.

Donohue and the City Council Members are running/governing Salinas, right into the ground!
