Tip your servers

United States

#1 Aug 15, 2012
I am a server at a popular local restaurant. I have been a server on and off most of my life, and now that I am back in college I am once again working as a server in order to have time for school work and still provide an income. I know that a lot of times mistakes are made and patrons sometimes receive less than satisfactory service, and tip a smaller amount as a result, however, servers who I know for a fact give 100% to their guests all the time are getting horrible tips! This is a consistent problem here in Salina, I have NEVER in all my years of serving gotten tipped so terribly, and on such a consistent basis as I have since I moved to Salina. Let me give a run-down of how a server(waiter/waitress) gets paid:
Hourly wage:$2.13 per hour
Tips: whatever patrons leave....should be at least %15 of the bill.
After that, the server is required by the restaurant to "tip out" to the bus and bar, this is 3% of SALES, this bears repeating 3% of SALES that means if you have a $100 bill and leave no tip for the server, that server is going to have to pay out of his or her pocket for serving you. If they get no tips they PAY to be at work. I know many of you are thinking "why not get a different job", and that is a valid question, but if those servers weren't there to serve you your favorite dishes and drinks, then you wouldn't be able to go out and eat, now would you? Poor people take what they can get in the way of employment, especially when jobs are scarce as they are now.
Another issue is the young people that come in, your teenagers come in, act like 3 year olds, make big messes, take up our time, then leave no tip. I know that if my teen went out and acted that way, I would be horrified!
The people that greet you with a smile, take your food orders, and keep your drinks flowing work hard, and most of them have families that count on them to make money every day to put clothes on their backs and food in their mouths, please keep that in mind the next time you think about throwing $2 down on a $65 bill.
