The owner of the coin shop is perhaps one of the most rude, vile, fat, and socially inert "persons" I've ever met. If you donít believe me, go see him. I brought in some coins to have them appraised. When he caught a glimpse of them, his only reply (in a very smart mouthed tone of voice) was, "did you just get them today?" I still don't understand what he was trying to say. When he "examined them", he didn't even take them out of the packaging. He spent a good amount of time implying that I was stupid for purchasing them yet he failed to understand that if I knew everything there is to know about coin grading, Iíd have my own store. He didn't like any of them but offered $100 to appraise them. I just walked out. To make a long story short... Don't see this snake. He's a bitter old fart who should be spending his remaining days appraising his neighbor's vomit, at the local nursing home. Itís beyond me, how this guy stays in business.. This isnít the only negative review you will ever see about him and it surely wonít be the last.

The guy has won ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR 19 consecutive times. He talked to me as if he thought I got my coins dealing drugs. He is a useless eater and a useless breather. I don't know how he stays in business. Someday someone is not going to take his crap and blow his brains out (if he has any). I can't say anything good about him. He is scum.

The owner of this shop is the rudest person that I have ever met. I went in to get a coin graded and he never even looked at my coin but he said "this coin has been polished". I've had the coin for 10 years and never even touched it....He's a very unhappy person to say the least. This SOB shouldn't advertise that he grades coins when in fact he does not. I wouldn't spit on him if he was on fire. He has many anger issues and is need of help. He doesn't need to be dealing with the general population.

I too have had several dealings with the " rude " man at the Roanoke Coin Shop. I recently was awarded several thousand dollars from the Veteran's Affairs and have always been interested in coin collecting. I went in to his shop straight from work ( had been painting all day, so I looked like a bum) and as I entered his shop and started browsing around he looked at me as if I was there to rob him. It wasnt until I pulled out 10- 100 dollar bills and said , how much silver can I buy with this ,did he start to speak to me as an equal. The man definitely lacks the social skills needed to be a top salesman. Everything in his shop is way over priced and to be polite about it he is nothing short of an arrogant self-centered a@*hole! If I had the money I would open my own coin shop and run him out of business just by being polite and courteous to my customers!! If you really want to get under his skin just mention that you can purchase anything he sells for less on Ebay. That will set him off!!!

I've been going in this guy's shop since I was a kid. I used to think he was a complete dick too.

However, when I got older, he began to take me seriously. I've watched him for a while, and he is purposefully obtuse to hobbyists. The reason for this is simple: hobbyists will never spend enough in his store to make it worth the hassle.

If you are are a serious numismatist, then you will find that he changes, even if you don't buy anything. He'll chat with you at length about different coin topics.

I have also never seen the man give a bad appraisal. He can't help it that people buy junk (anything you see on TV is crap to a numismatist- and you got ripped off for paying what you did) and then come in to his store to "cash in on their awesome investment."

He is socially inept I agree. Charging 100 dollars to appraise junk is his way of saying "No thanks. I am not interested." instead of just saying it.

I visited his shop about 3 months ago with a friend. My friend bought a roll of Silver Eagles from him. He paid too much but I kept my mouth shut. The owner was borderline rude then. A couple of weeks ago we went back in and my friend was looking at his Morgan silver dollars (he had just bought some around $23 each). He told the guy that he just bought some and was looking for more which was true. But the guy went bizerk and yelled, "you are just here to get a free appraisal! You want to know if you paid too much! I don't play that game! My friend pulled out a wad of cash and said, "No I am here to buy silver. How much do you want for these Morgans?" The owner said, "The price changes every minute." My friend asked, "How much is it this minute?" "I don't have time to look it up. I am a busy man," was the reply. We walked out and wont be going back. I don't care if you are a serious serious numismatist or just a hobbyist. There is no reason to treat somebody like a dog. Besides, if he wanted to get rid of us it would have been much quicker to price the Morgans high and we would have just left anyway (only without being furious). And if the guy was as smart as he thinks he is he sure didn't pick up on the fact that my buddy buys silver in some form or another every time he gets paid. My dad ran a used car lot for decades. If someone came in looking at a car and he knew they were not going to buy a car, he would just price the car high. That way they could part ways without starting a fight. What an Idiot.

yeah, ive been in this shop a few times before. I always noticed that the owner seemed a little strange, but I never had to speak with him much because I always found what I was looking for. So I would simply make a purchase and leave, no conversation. Today, I went to his shop to simply look around, and see if had any new baseball cards/coings, but knowing that I was going to make some kind of purchase.(Ive probably spent about $125 dollars in his shop over the past two months, but he never seems to remember me). Anyways, today I didnt see any cards I liked, so I started looking at some of the coins. I saw a coin from England from 1700. I told him that I had never collected coins before, but that I thought having a coin from 1700 was pretty neat. Now, I had stopped at the bank on the way there, I was planning on spending $50-$75 on SOMETHING. Yet, as soon as I made the comment to him about it being really neat that he had a coin from so long ago, his reply was "yeah, but thats irrelevant." I was confused, so I asked "Im sorry, what is irrelevant, the fact that I said it was neat that you had such an old coin?" He said, "thats right, its for sale, I dont talk about them." So, basically, Im a customer that is getting ready to buy this coin for whatever it costs, and he wont even let me discuss it with him? Who does that? Who treats an inquiring and interested customer that way, a customer that has spent plenty of money there, and is getting ready to spend more? This man is pathetic, he shouldnt be in business. I just walked out of the store.

I agree this guy is a real B-hole. I was attempting to make a purchase and recieved the same rude treatment. I guess the thieves and drug dealers that he is robbing are keeping him in business. No legitimate collector need darken this man's door. Roanoke deserves much better.

The owner is a total a-hole. He is pretty much the laughing stock of the valley when it comes to coin-collectors and dealers.
How he stays in business acting like a know-it-all idiot to his customers is beyond me.
Go to Yonces coins.. they are the only halfway decent coin shop in Roanoke. I say halfway-decent because there ARE NO DECENT COIN SHOPS IN ROANOKE!!!!
Unfortunately.

I do business with several coin dealers in VA and have been buying/selling coins and currency for over 20 years. I gave this guy two chances....he actually has some very nice pieces that I am interested in, but they are way overpriced and he truly does not know how to talk to people. Sad really, I feel sorry for him. But not sorry enough to go back into his shop.

Yes, I've got the bug. I have spent a decent amount of time going through rolls and buying select pieces over the past several months. I was hoping to start going to a local store but, WOW, I guess I'll have to keep things online or drive further... Too bad. People don't have to be like that. I'm learning that coin collectors are a fairly small group and like to chat. I imagine it didn't take long for this shop to get a reputation.

Oh well, it take s all types...

This guy is a moron. He's such an idiot that I buy my coin collecting supplies online at an added cost.
I'm a lifetime member of ANA and NGC. I own over 50k in rare coins, but for some reason every time I offer this guy ANYTHING he thinks I've stolen it. I have no idea how he stays in business. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS LOSER.

Never met him.

What is wrong with you people? Just stop going back for seconds. Good lord, do you guys expect this guy to be your therapist or something.

You make more money selling that you do talking.

Oh, you think he should build a relationship with you to get your business. Maybe cultivate the relationship to grow profits? Bring you up to speed on your hobby/investments. Maybe he isn't willing to jump through those patronizing(read sales presentation) hoops for your business.

You want to get Obama to write an executive order stating that you can't be a richard in your own business.

So everybody go back in there one more time with a clear mind and when you leave disappointed again, Say to yourself that you will never return...and mean it!

Maybe go buy some coins from this a-hole then go get your affirmation and conversation elsewhere. Maybe a pedicure from the way this bunch sounds.

Cheers!
