WOW, WOW, WOW! This place (Chinqua Penn) has been through so much already, from the mishandling of the property when it was owned by NC State, and now this comes about. For years, the "foundation" that looked after the property for the university did all sorts of underhanded dealings, even putting up Betsy Penn's precious silver against bank loans, which they defaulted on, and it was lost forever. No telling what else was stolen that no one knows about. When Calvin Phelps came along, everyone was tickled because a new owner (a tobacco company owner no less) would breathe life into the property and not let it fall down or go down the tubes. That lasted a few years until now, and now its been seized by the Feds. So now the nightmare begins again. Pray for all the people who have booked the property for weddings and special events and may now lose it or have to hastily have to reschedule. What a shame and a pity.

No surprise..I have known this douchebag for over a decade. I dealt with a few of his businesses, and collecting money from them was like pulling teeth. 120, 150 days to pay little bills like 5-10,000 bucks. Finally cut him off in 2008 and had to write off about $4,000. He probably used that money to buy himself and his skank wife a few dinners at Ruth Chris. I have known guys like him my entire life. The flashier they are, the more likely they are to be flat broke. It's the one's who drive Buicks and live in modest houses that accumalate reeal wealth. It seems in our soceity, when people buy expensive things, they just assume they are rich. For me, I'll keep driving my 2003 Ford, live in my 2,000 SF house and will retire debt free at 50.

I am so sorry for you!!! I got married there this past Saturday!!!! Everyone was GREAT!!! I grew up in Reidsville and horseback rode all over the plantation.

I HATE THIS!!!! I want to find someone who actually wants to help preserve this great place!!

For your day, try BELMONT HOUSE or AUTUMN CREEK Vineyard.

For those that are not aware, Reidsville is full of a bunch of shady and dishonest people Phelps just happen to get caught. However the rest would too if only they didnít know how to play the game! All I can say is ďitís about timeĒ the others need to get caught at the same game!

Every town/city in the world is full of dishonest people. Why bash Reidsville?

Do not try Belmont House - it is too expensive. Try the Penn House. It is cheaper than both of these and the people who run it are extremely nice

The Belmont House is also all inclusive, so I'm sure if the wedding is soon you have already made plans for the cake/food/DJ unless Belmont would cut a deal for the situation.

Because this small town cannot afford these crooks here, we are already losing money and its getting away faster than we can bring it in!!!! I am not originally from here however, my family is! I guess my biggest question is "why does this small town need a Mayor and City Manager", for all the ones that want to question my reaction, please answer that for me?

I Have been wondering if I was the only one who has quesioned the need for all these City Dignitaries in this tiny town that is falling down around our eyes. We have a task force for this & a Committee for this & yet a ride thru this town is only witness to the need for one of these forces or committees to get off their lazy, rich ASS and DO SOMETHING!!! The Music @ Chinqua Penn & The Winter Balls are only for these folks but we all know who is paying. Im guessing these rest of us folks would rather use the money these galas cost to update this town we ALL live in. We have abandoned buidings that are a serious eyestore & Heaven forbid if some honest hard-working person wants to open a legit business because the powers that be make it too difficult to do so. I am assuming this is because these businesses are not being opened by people who can help the Mayor like Mr.phelps did. Until the citizens of this town rally together & demand answers from the lowlifes who run this place we will forever take that ride thru this downtroden little town that REALLY be a NORTHSTAR if it ONLY had a chance against those that have dollar signs in their eyes & they are missing why we cant attract new businesses or even update some of the old ones. I am sure these same people will be in their place of worship this Sunday & they will feel right with themselves. I will be praying for them since the last I heard you cant drive a mazareti to heaven or barter a house on the beach for forgiveness.

You obviously haven't been to one of the concert series. Admission is free. It's a family friendly event. Gives a chance for local songwriters to show their stuff. There's one tonight. You should give it a try before you bash it.

I really wonder if "skank" is a good term to use for Phelps' wife. The meaning of the word doesn't seem to fit her at all. A search on Wikipedia dictionary was used by me to determine my response.

I got married at the Penn House..wonderful place. beautifully decorated. You won't need to buy flowers to decorate just to walk down the aisle. You don't have to rent chairs they have them. VERY INEXPENSIVE!! Love that place, seriously check it out. It's owned by the city of reidsville and the prices haven't changed in almost 10 years.

The moral to the story is that when you give something to the State of North Carolina, make sure they want it. All this mess began with Betsy who outlived her no-good husband. She gave the plantation and around $800,000 to UNCG. Well, they went through the money. The property was then transferred to NC State University. They didn't want it. A group of people in Reidsville formed a non-profit foundation and hired a real class act who ran the place in the ground. So then it struggled to stay open, often living off a credit card to pay salaries and utilities. The board got a $100,000 line of credit. Fast forward - a man in Davie County gets married there and decides to purchase the place. Well, he was just as shady as Jeff Penn. There were many beautiful items in the house, but few of real value. That was according to a Virginia appraiser who did some work for the PBS "Antiques Roadshow." Nonetheless, it was worthwhile visiting. I hope the court treats the remaining items as one collection and doesn't split them up. That would be a travesty.

The most recent owner is from Davie County. Get your facts straight. I used to work there.
