Is there anyone that works in this town that says "thank you" anymore? It seems like everywhere that I shop, Caseys, Country Mart, Wal-Mart, hardly anyone ever says thank you. When someone hands you money, say thank you. I train my employees to say thank you for just coming in my store, regardless if they buy anything or not. When people hands you money, it helps pay your salary and helps keep the store open, so that you can have a job. I know that some people's attitude is "It ain't my money", but in reality, it is. I think that I will stop shopping at places that don't say thank-you. Problem is, I'm afraid that there won't be any places left to shop in Salem. Have some common courtesy people. OK, off my soapbox, just had to vent.

Respect and morals are pretty much dead. People as a whole are selfish and thoughtless. Which is why I recommend doing what I do when this happens. Make it awkward. If you hold a door open and they walk through without a word, say "my pleasure" or my favorite "NEXT". If they don't say thanks go ahead and tell them you are welcome and watch their face. Better yet say "Don't mention it. Oh you were a step ahead of me weren't you." Make it a game for yourself. For me it's the only way to stay positive and be able to make myself hold the door open the very next time I see someone. Just incase they happen to not be so self absorbed.

Yes, it is enjoyable to "cute" people down all the time.
You should try it.

I just wanted to say thank you for starting this thread. It is uncommon courtesy these days, Caseys on McArthur usually has friendly ladies, esp Pat.

No. Hardly anywhere you go anymore has nice, polite employees. Casey's on Main Street has some not so nice people. One girl is always rude and bitchy when I go in. Makes me not want to send my money there. If I didn't spend money where there were rude people worked, I'd have a full bank account lol

I work at a bank and I try to treat all my customers with friendliness and respect. I also make it a point to comment when I happen to get friendly service at places like Wal-mart or McDonalds. I've found if you let people know how much you appreciate good service it is a little more likely to happen more often.

It is very hard in this town for anyone to be nice. I'm not saying everyone, but the majority are rude and careless! I wasn't brought up that way and don't treat people that way! Like the other guy said make them uncomfortable when they do it to you!

When the big corporations started running the Mom and Pop businesses out of business, courtesy went with them.
People took pride in their work and business and had to be polite to keep business coming in. Of course, when I said "had" they really wanted to treat people good.
Now days, corporations like Walmart, hire people who come in, put their time in and go home. I went to Walmart the other day and asked a clerk where something was. She said, "I don't know." I said, "Okay...um...thank you for your help." I would have said, "No I don't, but I will find out." that is only common courtesy.
People do not teach their children common morals and manners anymore. It is a "Me, Me, Me" world. No one cares about other people anymore. They are doing their children an injustice.
This is so sad.

This thread leads me to another topic that really gets under my skin... What's up with parents not telling their kids to say thank you these days? For example, when someone gives your small child a piece of candy at a place of business, you should then instruct your child to say thank you, unless of course they do it on their own without being reminded. I work at a job where I frequently give children treats, and 9 times out of 10, the child doesn't say thank you and the parent doesn't ask them to. I guess parents these days are raising their kids to be entitled, selfish little jerks. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN MANNERS, PEOPLE.

Well maybe those employees got tired of saying thank you and what not when customers comes into stores. I mean do customers says "Thank you" too? I have had no problems, I've seen (I'm deaf I read lips) them saying thank you! Even if they didn't I'd say thank you! And they would say thank you right back at me! I mean yea it seems unfair if they don't show respect and what not. But I think they want the same respect as well. But if they want to earn money it's part of their job as well! I have two little ones that knows how to say please and thank you! Sometimes they would speak without signing that I would have to ask the employees if my kids have said please and thank you. All they had to do was to shake their head or nod! I've always believe in showing respect even if it means not receiving them. It will make them feel that they should respect more. But it just depends on them.

My comment is that I RARELY hear anyone say "excuse me" when they walk between you and what you are looking at, for example when looking at something on a shelf in Walmart. They also about knock you over when getting past you in an aisle and you have to move or get run over - but still no "excuse me." REALLY irritates me. Also, if you hold the door open for someone, it would be incredible to hear "thank you." Sometimes if I hold open a door and don't hear "thank you," I will say "You're welcome," hoping to shame them for being so rude. Manners are so dead and nonexistent in this town. Grrrrrrr.

I say thank and excuse me all the time. It is just how I was raised. I've also taught my grandkids, nieces and nephews the same. That is the problem with this world now. No one cared to teach their kids manners and respect. Same goes for showing respect to the flag, a funeral procession, our military. It all has gone out the window. People look at me like I'm an alien from out of space if I hold the door for them. If they don't respond with a thank you I say, " You are welcome have a nice day". Eventually it will catch on.(I hope lol) Businesses need to tell their employees to be courteous. Which in turn could bring back customers. How do you think Dent Brothers for an example made it so long in their business? Ok I've said my peace. Oh and have a nice day!:)

I would just like to know why it is necessary for people to say hi how u doing? Good how u doing? Good., have a good day, you too! Bla bla! I hate it! Just say hi good morning! Don't ask how I'm doing. You don't even stop walking it's obviously a ritual and you don't really want to know.
People should start telling everyone all about their day when other's ask this! Every detail. That will end it! Ha!

The last 4 gifts I have given (bridal, baby shower) I haven't received a thank you. When I was young you were taught to send thank you's but I guess now days you don't acknowledge a gift.

Daily Horoscope for May 25

Aries

Your emotions have the upper hand, making you rather fiery and fervent. That's great if you're hoping for a passionate encounter with you-know-who, because you'll be really hot stuff. However, in non-sexual situations you could become somewhat tempestuous and irritable, especially if you suspect that things aren't going the way you want.
