If you go 19 north to the meramec river stay on the left side of the bridge. The right side "the slab" has been privately owned and shut off to the public for awhile. But if you cross the bridge "still staying on the left side" there are a couple of caves over there. One of them is decent size. There will be a little tiny gravel road and a small trail right by the river. All in all that river is dirty and better for things like fishing and catching crawlfish.

If you want a better river and scenery head 19 south. Look up places like cedar grove, round springs, pulltite, Akers fairy. Anything on the current river is good. Flying W used to be the best spot, until it also got shut down (pretty much)

There is a state park called Montauk. It's nice for camping and fishing. Real family oriented.

If your looking for something more isolated you could try dents ford. It's a lot harder to find, but pretty neat. Watch out for snakes there though.

Hope I helped a little. Salem isn't as bad as people say. And there are some amazing places around here. If your still at a loss for places to go check out Akers fairy.com . It will give you an idea of more places to visit. And just a heads up, the water levels are extremely low this year. So, if you decide to float be very careful.

If you don't mind driving a little further you should try elephant rock state park, they have their own website. And not far from there is Jonson shutins. Great trails out there and scenery.

Johnson Shut-Ins is amazing, they've put up restricted signs on most cliff jumping sites though. Elephant Rocks is beautiful, and about every time we go we find new little crevices and places to explore.

Get some pamphlets at chamber of commerce or local real estate places. Talk to the locals they know where everything is. Current River is a great place to go. Talk to the canoe rental places they are online as well. Round Springs,Alley Springs Park. So much to do in the summertime. Look it all up online.Montauk has camping, fishing, trails, picnic and the mill.
Dillards Mill is outside of Salem also.

Malady ford was a great place to swim. There was a low water bridge and little or no traffic. I dont know if you can still drive to it or if its private property. This was back in the late 1960s when we used to swim there. Its located on the meremac river about a mile upstream from Dents Ford.
