My Great Great Grandfather was a member of the Salem Militia. Oscar Turner Hodge and the Salem Militia successfully fought off the Union troops that were raiding the countryside stealing livestock and raping and pillaging. He was credited with killing six of the invading scum. Eventually the raiders fell back to their camp in Smithland and left Salem alone.

Union troops occupied Smithland and set up a small HQ there. They used the present day courthouse as a hospital. In order to help feed their troops they led many foraging raids into the neighboring countryside. They killed the landowners, raped or killed the women, took the livestock and stored goods and most often the children were left behind like stray animals to fend for themselves. Absolute scum!
