John Shakespeare, who was a son of the founder of Shakespeare tackle company, was found murdered in his residence in Centralia in 1975. If my memory is correct, a curious thing about this murder was that many valuables were left behind, leading to a conclusion that the motive was not robbery.

There is an interesting New York Times story online about John Shakespeare's curious sale in the 1960s of 30 Bugatti cars for a price far below fair market value. Reading that story got me to thinking back about the murder of John Shakespeare and wondering if the crime had ever been solved, and if not, if there were ever any leads in the case.

I'm also curious if anyone has an inkling of what John Shakespeare's net worth was as his father had reportedly made quite a fortune with the Shakespeare tackle company.

I agree, there is little info on this. I have a book about the Schlumpf collection and wanted to research John a little more...

I was an employee of the Centralia Police Dept when this murder took place. No.. It was never solved. There was many mistakes made. Interviews mishandled or not done at all. I had saved every article about it and knew things that were not in the news. I had written my recollections and was intending to write a book. My "items" were borrowed by a high ranking member of the police dept. and never returned to me. He has since died. The many (I believe 10) bags of gold coins found in his basement false heat duct was held in the chiefs office for sever days until the family came and claimed them. some were open others still had the mint seal. I would still like to write my book because I know things that are not in writing anywhere. I am knowledgeable in how to recover the printed info that was "taken" from me. What I had from news papers, and points and items I had documented myself, pointed out things that could have been incriminating to individuals and persons of interest that were never interviewed. I was the one that took the five page statement (in my handwriting)from the man that discovered the body and pointed out the hiding place of the bags of gold coins. He was never interviewed by a sworn officer. He is since passed like many others involved.I personally think the murder could be still be solved with "no holds barred" on the police files and evidence. Many new procedure's have come forward. Who knows maybe the finger prints or DNA of the "killers" could be found on the electric cord used to bind him.

I live in Centralia, And it is still very hard to talk or get anyone to talk about his murder. I have all 30 of the Bugatti's Inventory with all 30 serial number's, chassis number's, Here is one for proof, Type 55 rosdster, serial number 552371b.chassis number 55237.length 13.9,wide 5'5,height 4'4 .track front and rear 4'4.wheelbase axle 9'0.Only way to get this info is to find the type 55 roadster in the French National Car Museum. Don't know about the smith and Wesson handcuffs ,if the Centralia police dept. still have them .Do know for a fact that the police chief simon franklin said they were able to lift several fingerprint's and other object's in the utility room. Now for the police cover up..22 caliber handgun was sold for police inventory. Can you say they knew some day that dna would lead to some very good evidence. Very suspicious. Because the guy that killed him was a very powerfull person to. It was W.I.W. who killed him!

Centralia,

Give me some more hints on the killer's initials. Does the last name remind you of a popular pop duo from the UK whose more famous half hung out in park bathrooms? Drop some clues before you take the secret to the grave. I have wondered about this case since I first learned of it at Central grade school in Centralia. Help me put this mystery to rest.

CC, if you think Centralia knows anything above, you're fooling yourself. Bunch of conspiracy nuts. The Centralia police would not sell evidence in an unsolved homicide case.
I know who the killer was and his initials are JCB. I think he now lives in Northbrook, IL.

Good luck cracking this caper.

To.cc.If you read the paper's from all of the new's report's and look at all of the evidence. And have talked to a lot of older people like I have done over 20 year's now .And know a lot of info that I know on this ,You to will know and be the judge and know for sure who murdered shake !Fact! And did you mean central city grade school? Now to STLPT.Fact the Centralia police dept did get rid of the gun period! Chief Arland Speidel said the Centralia police dept did sell the gun. Fact!Does not say anthing about all of the other evidence.Smith & Wesson Handcuff's .They had serial number's and manufacture's info .And lifted several fingerprint's from those cuff's.(DNA).Fact!.Missing a blue bandana, that had evidence (DNA) on it.Fact! Bullet from shakes head evidence .Fact! Shirt that was used as a gag. Again Evidence.(DNA).Fact! And the electric cord that was tied around his feet and than up around his hand's. evidence (DNA).Fact! And yes the police in every state in America have corruption .Alway's have and alway's will be ,Before our time and long after we are all dead and gone period. Fact! And STLPT give's no proof or any evidence in anything they say. Fact! And how does the initial's JCB. Come from ? Where is any and all of your proof at? So far you are only talking B.S. Fact!

I just stumbled on this thread. In late 1975 I waited on John Shakespeare at the Marriot Hotel in New Orleans at the top restaurant there where I was a waiter. I discussed with him the Bugatti's, as my Grandfather and I saw them on a train passing in front of our house, and I remember the story of the the sale of the Bugatti's as I am a car nut. Shakespeare was beaten up in a bar in New Orleans days after I waited on him, and I think the newspaper said it was in a gay pool hall. He was beaten pretty bad. Shakespeare was keen on young men. Later I read he was murdered- never had an idea of a connection on the new Orleans case and the murder.

I remember when this happened, it was a scary feeling being a murder commited in our small town, now that I'm older it does seem very strange how at the time of the murder and now, there has never been any real coverage of the case, more attention was given the the 30 cars he sold than when he was murdered.it doeses appear this was kept hush hush to prtect someone or group of people.I agree modern test should be done in hopes of resolving this case, but don't look for the one's that have kept this such a low profile to raise any questions.

I know a whole bunch of the story and also about him. My grandparents knew him very well. They bought his house and redid a lot of it. I also know of the F.B.I. who came to my grandparents house soon after his death. His murder was horrible as is any murder. I've been very interested in this for a long time. I will check in soon to see if anyone. would like more information. Take care!

To solve this someday: No kidding? I have been looking into this for some years now myself. I have been told that W. B. W. was the last person to see him. He wonders around town quite a bit, or at least I use to see him with a note pad taking observations around Centralia.

I was there when John was carted out and knew him. It was big news then. I know the owners of the house and have been down in the basement where a friend of mine lived before moving out. You can still see the blood stain on the concrete floor. I have heard a lot of speculation about who killed him but nothing that I can say for sure. I do think the police know who did it and were and are still protecting this person. I do believe the person was local and had to do with an homosexual relationship. Robbery was apparently not the motive. The investigation was clearly botched; some say intentionally. I think it would be a good move to reopen the case or call attention to it from some organization outside Centralia.
