I used a 165 Shaver last Year. Worked ok but had a Few Leaks. I fixed them myself because I wanted Heat. They took care of me by trading me out of the smaller furnace and giving me the next size larger. Believe it of not, They were Prompt on the Warranty Side. Customer Service and delivery may be bad but I am happy with the Warranty side of it. My "New" Furnace is puffing away as we type.
I actually had a fair dealing with Shaver.

I just purchased a 290, the top of the water jacket is bent. I contacted Ben who explained it was due to the heat when welding the chimney!
He then said I can buy some silicone from him to fix the problem.

Wonder why he does not fix the problem at the factory when building the system. The furnace arrived late and was dented all over.

I have not hooked up the furnace yet as I am now concerned it will smoke too much. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce the amount of smoke it will produce?

Thanks

I ordered a 340 model (the BIG one) from Shaver last April. I did extensive research on at least 25 different manufacturers. After looking at all the info available on the web at that time (and now), I felt the heavy-duty construction and simplicity of the unit was what I was looking for. At the time of ordering, I explained to them that I did not need or want the furnace delivered until early fall. I set up a tentative delivery date of Oct. 1st. As that date approached, I called them to push the date back as I hadn't gotten the pad poured yet. I took delivery on Oct. 8th. That was earlier than I was supposed to get it and I still did not have the pad done. I paid to have it delivered and placed on the pad. They brought it early, so it could not be set in place. At my request and WITH NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER they sent me an extra circulating pump instead of refunding me the difference. The furnace operates just fine. I heat my 2750 sq. foot home and attached 3 car garage, the hot water for my home, and my grandmother's poorly insulated old farm house. The only thing I would change about the furnace is to customize it a bit. I will be making my own shaker grate for it for next year. I also want to build angled sides for the inside of the firebox that can also hold refractory brick. This will serve two purposes: 1. holding in more heat, thereby burning up the "charcoal" nuggets better.
and 2. giving a "hopper" effect so that as the fuel burns, gravity will direct it not only downward, but into the center which is where the air supply comes from and the ashes fall down through.
This will, I think, remedy the problem so prevalent on almost all OWB stoves where ashes build up on either side of the fire grates (on stoves that have them). That particular problem not only creates large piles of not-fully-combusted charcoal, but it also holds in moisture if it gets deep enough. This will ultimately cause the firebox to corrode away.
All in all, I am satisfied with the Shaver furnace. I have had good luck with it so far and I think that once I make my customizations, it will go from "good" to "great".
I can't really say anything too bad about thier public relations based on my experience, but I would say that they need to work on that based on all the comments above. Speaking as a business owner, the best advertising is customer referrals. You won't get that unless you give people at least what they expect from you (which is what you promised them) or better. And timing is everything. No one likes to feel as though they are being "blown off". Excuses are BAD and should always be apologetic, assertive(as to the remedy) and financially rewarding(even if only slightly) to the customer.

Can ypu please tell me whether you installed the refactory brick?
Did it reduce the smoke output?

Thanks

I bought a Shaver last year and Had Zero Problems Getting it. The problems came after hooking it up. The Plastic Sharkbite Fittings started to leak and the Stove itself had leaks. It would Stean from every nook and cranny. The guys at Shaver worked with me and traded me out of it for the next size bigger a 250. The unit has a few small workmanship issues but pumps Free Heat to beat the band and works perfectly. I have no more Shaver Complaints. My advice to a potential boiler/furnace buyer, Spend as much as the Math makes sense and you will be ok. Plan ahead as these stoves from every manufacturer are in high demand. Remember, You can buy a LOT of Propane for 12 grand so buy your brand of stove accordingly. When you do the Math, The Shaver is the ticket if you plan ahead.

I keep the furnace full and it will not last all night.. I wake up to a water temp of 100 or 120 and a house at 60 or 62 degrees.. afraid to burn coal because it will void warranty... The 290 coal is a piece of crap the fire box is way to little... My brother in laws central boiler is tree times bigger and has a longer burn time ...guess i will pitch shaver and buy a central

You must have a few factors working against you. Did you use 1" Pex, Are you using a Heat Exchanger in your Furnace, Is the Thermostat on your Stove set at 180 degrees. Is your fan open 1/3 of the way,What size is your Stove and what Sq' are you trying to heat, Is your chimeny pluged with creosote, What kind of wood are you using. Let me know, I would like to help

Trust Me, I am not advertising for Shaver.. I fill my 250 at 8am and 8pm. I burn Oak,Maple,Elm and Boxelder all seasoned. I heat 4500 Sq'and have a little trouble when the infloor heat kicks on at the same time as the regular heat.( exchanger in the Furnace plenim)But I set the thermostat at the boiler at 180 and open the fan to 1/3. I run a Brush down the chimeny every 2 weeks and do ashes at that time too. I just never have any other troubles. I do run my Pump 24/7 and I think everyone should. This lets the stove know that the temp is dropping and it reacts 100% better than when the pump comes on when the house calls for heat. There are a lot of Variables to consider. Lets discuss. By the Way, I Sell Welding and Cutting Equipment to Central Boiler, Heatmore and Wood Dr. They are all totally top of the line but cost twice what the Shaver does. I know that you can solve your troubles with any brand stove by looking at all the things I have written. If not lets discuss,You will find a soulution even if you made your stove yourself.

Sagittarius

You're in a strange mood, Sagittarius. You're feeling impatient and cross, and nothing is quite right. No wonder, with Mercury and Mars retrograde, under a Full Moon lunar eclipse! But is it necessary to be quite so contrary, so determined to do the opposite of what's expected of you? Try to sort out the problem sooner rather than later, then do something energetic and therapeutic so you can burn off your nervous energy. Then you're all set for a great New Year's Eve!
