I grew up there as well, moved away and moved back to raise my daughter there. Haven't been there in over 10 years now, but the last time I was it was SAD. Those WERE the days!

Rust belt people. Had nothing to do with anything local. Globalization, if it upsets you then protest that at least.

Yeh, Walter's Barber Shop was at street level, and Bill Bess' Barber Shop was directly underneath.
If you didn't fuss in the chair Walter gave you a nickel, and Bill a lollipop or bubble gum.
I also remember the Hard Days Night opening at the Seneca Theater. They gave away a bunch of B&W photos and raffled off the film's soundtrack LP.
They even drove city officials up to the front of the theater in a convertible wearing Beatle wigs -how corny.
There also usta be a hill near the new (old) hospital that had a towline to drag you back up the hill.
Remember Leonard's Grocery on Swan St.? I remember walking there to buy candy and a Popsicle or ice cream when I was really small.
I guess that we're lucky to have memories that our kids will never have ...
WOW you have a good memory. Just posted and could not recall names of the business's on main St.
Outdoor Store ?? too
Good job. Well said..

Bill Best was the nicest man and a good barber - his son was a pretty good basketball player - wasn't there another barbershop across the street - Chamberlain's?

Torge Hotel was the best bar!

And I should have added owner Jimmie Torge, one of the coolest guys around - getting rid of The Torge was like tearing the heart out of downtown
