Everything but gas and cigarettes. It's gross what the city is. Nothing.

People used to come from miles around to shop in Salamanca ...

and everybody, both customers & merchants, knew each other personally and on a first name basis to boot !!!

I remember when I was a little kid, walking down the sidewalk on Main St. with my mother.

She'd stick her head in the door of businesses to say hello, even if she didn't have any business to conduct with them that day.

Salamanca used to be that kinda town ...

Yeh, Walter's Barber Shop was at street level, and Bill Bess' Barber Shop was directly underneath.

If you didn't fuss in the chair Walter gave you a nickel, and Bill a lollipop or bubble gum.

I also remember the Hard Days Night opening at the Seneca Theater. They gave away a bunch of B&W photos and raffled off the film's soundtrack LP.

They even drove city officials up to the front of the theater in a convertible wearing Beatle wigs -how corny.

There also usta be a hill near the new (old) hospital that had a towline to drag you back up the hill.

Remember Leonard's Grocery on Swan St.? I remember walking there to buy candy and a Popsicle or ice cream when I was really small.

I guess that we're lucky to have memories that our kids will never have ...

and one of the reasons kids will not have nice memories is you are on here bashing Salamanca day and night, spreading hate and negativity.

U ALL live in this DREAM WORLD where you think Salamanca is gonna rise from the ashes.

If it ever does, it'll be long after anyone posting this site is long dead and Indian tribes have destroyed themselves out of existence -then maybe ???

The downtown could have been brought back to it's original splendor if they wouldn't have demolished the NE block of Main St.

As far as I'm concerned that was the END of Salamanca that thrived.

That mall has all the appeal of a shithouse door ona tuna boat :-(~

Used to Flagstop The Erie Lacawanna at Carrolton and ride to Salamanca. You could also Flag the Edwards Lakes to Sea Bus or the Blue Bird from Olean. 1956

Agreed. Why did these shops you loved so much close? It's partly because people stopped shopping there. More people were able to purchase cars and shop out-of-town. People saw there were more choices and better prices. There is no need to single out one event or a particular group of people. It's strictly socio-economics. If Salamanca had a shoe store, I bet you would still drive to Olean or buy them online.

Leave the dance studio alone. That girl works her butt off for the kids in this town whether they are white or native. This is one of the only positive businesses in town, leave them alone!

This reminds me, I have to go back out and rephotograph the old BR&P East Rail Depot, they have really cleaned that place up a lot since I last photographed it.
