I have to compliment one aldermen that thinks for himself. i didn't realize that the exempt property was 70% of the tax rolls. It would seem to me that since the Mayor and the President of the nation would work together and make sure all of the exemptions are legal. I understand there is some property that a native would appear to own and that is for the purpose of getting the tax free status for a friend, I have heard that the mayor is a part of this little game with 2 home he owns.

Ok, I have tried to understand the whole reason behind the City of Salamanca being leased from the Seneca Nation. I think I got it..

Protect the Tax paid for salaries for City workers, police dept., court system.

Protect the people who bought homes upon Seneca Land from the Seneca Nation.

And next to that I do not see any value for the lease.

Maybe the people who bought houses on Seneca Nation Land should deal directly with Seneca Nation and bypass all the Taxes . Then you would not need a City Mayor, Police Dept. ETC..

But if you did it would be a Seneca Nation issue to control.. Paying all the taxes to the county and city would end. And it would not change the fact at all that you bought a house but not the land it sits on..

Unless I am missing something..

You don't buy a house on the Reservation. You buy a leasehold interest. SNI owns the land, the house, the trees, the grass and everything else except your furniture and your underwear.

This is all old news and exactly why the houses are not selling in Salamanca and why no stores or anything will ever come here. Raising taxes on homes that the taxpayers don't really own is just going to make things worse for everyone. It is just going to bring back more trouble. We tried to get this straightened out in SCOUT, but nobody would listen. Some of you are just waking up!!
