Don't include me with the trolls who bash volunteer firefighters. You're confusing competence with credentials. I encounter credentialed people all the time who are incompetent. I don't disagree that the leadership of the Tornado Volunteer Fire Department has impressive credentials. But, they're incompetent leaders. They are extremely reactive. They lack vision. Anyone who can't envision an organization they lead as improving, will get an organization that never improves. That's the situation with the leadership of the Tornado Volunteer Fire Department. Combining it with the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department would be the best thing that could happen for all the residents of Upper Falls, especially the ones on the west side of Coal River.
Obviously, this was my last post. The other posts using "everett" are by some POS troublemaker.

There are only two fire departments that primarily serve Upper Falls. They are Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department and Tornado Volunteer Fire Department. Neither has been able to secure a single federal grant since the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program was created!
Meanwhile, West Side Volunteer Firefighters is among 235 different fire departments across the state that have received federal grant awards from FEMA since 2001. So, why don't these losing departments do something different?
It may make sense to merge the Lakewood and Tornado fire departments. The stations could continue to operate autonomously. The combined department would only consolidate the functions that make sense.
Members would combine their grant-writing capabilities and capture the kind of funding that a CDP with the characteristics of Upper Falls can now deliver. Instead of operating two tiny fire departments that fracture the ability of each other to get funding, why not become a single Upper Falls Volunteer Fire Department, serving the largest census designated place in the entire state of West Virginia?
I think this is an incredibly good idea. Does anyone know if the two stations are discussing this possibility?

As it turns out, you're not entirely accurate.

The ONLY substantial grant EITHER fire department has EVER received was Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department's $228,000.00 for Vehicle Acquisition five years ago, on 08/03/2007. Tornado has NEVER received either a Vehicle Acquisition or a Modify Facilities grant! That's still decidedly NOT a very good track record for either department!

Lakewood has in fact been awarded four (4) AFG grants. One (1) vehicle acquisition and three (3) operations and safety grants. They've also secured three (3) county grants all in the last 5 years. To me, that's a decent amount of grant funding!

You just repeated what I wrote. No, compared to other departments, ONE decent grant in the entire history of the fire department is a terrible record. Only Tornado is worse, with NONE.

it is unfortunate that people in our line of work be it paid or volunteer that we have to bicker back and forth to the point of putting each other down. I find it absurd that just because you are getting paid to do a job that you put down the ones who spend their own money their own time at the cost of their families to provide a service to their community. making speculations to the point that we all want to be paid is definitely false, i for one am a civil engineer and (no offence to any paid ff) i don't want to have to take a pay cut so Everett I’m sorry that you see this all so one sided. As far as carrying your gear you probably only have a harness and a pocket tool or two more than i have in my gear. Need i mention the extraction equipment with our 60# <=(that's a pound symbol also known as lb just so you know) spreader and power unit having to lug it wherever we go. so in short I’ll give you credit yes there are some volunteers that i wouldn't want to have on scene but i bet if you look real hard there are some paid guys like that too and you don't hear anyone dogging them from our side. Just like former ff said it's not bragging rights or a call count it's the fact that you are doing something good for someone else. I’m glad to hear that even paid fireman wouldn’t want your attitude. I feel bad for the people you say you have worked with to have to deal with your attitude. Lastly I would like to apologize to all firefighters on here know that not everyone shares that mindset of a few ignorant people. To all God bless and may we all come home.

For one thing, the guys at west side do just fine on calls. If you had a brain, its better to have your resources and not need them, rather than need them and not have them. But, you guys do what ya gotta do. If it wasn't for running mutual aide with them you wouldn't have half of your calls anyway.

FF09! YOUR A COMPLETE IDIOT! Im a member of westside and have been for years. You and your department wouldnt survive if it were not for westside. It seems like we are constantly coming out to pull that station out of hot water. Cause I PROMISE you that your station is of NO help to us when you come to westside's area. If it wasn't for mutual aid in effect, we would not be using you. Understand this. When we cancel you and your department on calls, its because we dont feel like babysetting that day. Take that for a grain of salt.

I am a PROFESSIONAL FIREMAN I work for the SAFD and we do 10 times the work you do at westside. So dont give me any lip about how good you guys are. If it wasnt for us you or any of the other Vols wouldnt know how to roll up a hose. I try to be nice to the vols but to be honest, most of the time they just give REAL firemen a bad name.

Well west side member in regular fashion you clearly just mistaken FFO9 for me and mad an ass of your self, this is why a lot of people have problems with you guys. Always out to talk shit, I made good remarks about your station in MY posts. Some other person started talking shit under a similar name. Sorry you can't distinguish an O or an 0.

i think tornado vfd should join westside and become a sub station for westside. ive seen personally westside come in tornados area and have to take over the fire scene and put the fire out casue tornado didnt know what to do. at westside its more strict to run calls and take roles in the fire service. they make sure their guys are well trained and with the leadership that westside has, they could convert tornado into a very good fire dept if they took it over. i think this should happen very soon so us (the residents) of tornado can finally feel safer.

to be honest i been around all the western part of kanawha county fire depts,(volunteer and paid). its true tornado, lakewood depts wouldnt have any calls if they wasnt doing mutual aid with west side, and by what i can tell west side does the best job out of any volunteer fire dept i seen. and they do sometimes have to babysit other depts. but the job always gets done so thats the main goal right? and for the paid dept of st.albans, them guys are mostly a joke, they dont do work at all, they sit around and get paid for it, although there is maybe 3 or 4 guys thats are great firefighters at safd
