It is unfortuate that the conflict within Zion Baptist Church could not have been resolved by following the guidelines set forth in its By-laws. It is equally unfortunate that it seems apparent that those other members (of the 500) do not recognize their duties as the decision-makers via those By-laws.
The chief role of a pastor within the church is to preach the saving, grace gospel of Jesus Christ, not to exert authority over those willing to exercise their duties in the only other office described in the Bible, that of a Deacon or any other member. Authority of the church is rooted in membership up-to-pastor, not pastor down-to- membership.
