I suppose the main purpose of this is to make anyone researching these buildings prior to renting them aware.

They own 507 East 73rd Street, 509 East 73rd Street, and 511 East 73rd Street in New York, NY.

They are slow and/or refuse maintenance in the buildings.
They took 1/4th of my deposit and refuse to provide documentation of where that money went. When asking for it, I was told to just sue them.

Of course, small claims court is pointless. I wish someone else had written about them so I would have known not to rent in their buildings.

They are awful. my apartment just burned down (a girl on my floor kept a candle burning while in the shower), and in the midst of lugging out the remnants of my belongings, they had absolutely zero answers. where was I supposed to live? when can I expect the remainder of this month's rent, next months (my last and already payed for) and security, so that I can find a new apartment? NOTHING. No smopke detector sounded in the building during the fire and evacuation. Their insurance sleeze had the nerve to say to me that no on was hurt, so he wasnt sure what I was asking about the smoke detectors... These people are crooks and the scum of the earth and will most certainly not be left alone after this disturbing epidosde. Oh and we also havent heard from them. The fire was 5 days ago. no return to my calls- nothing.

Agree with all the other posters and I have only lived at 235 E. 4th St. for a week. The only problem with our newly renovated apartment was the door - it wasn't resting properly on the hinges, so it was causing all of our locks (which we changed ourselves) to break. So after calling a locksmith for the 2nd time, we called to have them fix the door. Roberta, who managed to twist my words even after I sent them a letter documenting our conversation, told Mr. Moses (is he the landlord, or just some hired a**hole who yells at people for fun?) that we were a) making unauthorized repairs to the apartment, b) withholding rent. All I said was that "we wanted to have a discussion about rent reduction" and sent them the locksmith receipt to show that the technician believed the door itself was the problem. I then got several threatening calls from Mr. Moses, with him ultimately saying he won't renew our lease for NEXT APRIL because of this, and hung up. No one has a right to speak to me like that. If I wasn't too busy with having a job and pursuing a professional certification, I would take him to court and sue him for all he's got, but then again, once he sees that the rent checks are getting paid by said job and professional certification, he won't care.

we lived on 318 E 78th street. Never, but NEVER rent from them particularly in that building unless you want to have roaches/cockroaches in your bed. Building is infested with bugs that are crawling out the ceilings, dry walls etc. All the company did is to put bait and roach hotel. Beyond horror!!!! Heating is so pure, they only heat ground level where the Super lives. Thanks God I did not develop some nasty disease!

Be careful before renting from Vanderleigh Properties, Henry Moses. Their buildings are seriously neglected (dirt, rats, no heat) and they act belligerently once you are a tenant. See more info at http://114eastfirst.blogspot.com/

I got bed bugs while living in building 433 E. 80th Street. They refused to help me, but instead insisted that I pay the extermination fees of over $1,500 which is against policy according to the board of health for nyc. They are responsible for removing the bed bugs and instead stopped answering my calls.
Roberta was so rude and unhelpful. We also had mice in the apartment and a break-in. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!

NEVER RENT FROM THEM.

The buildings are disgusting. Had mice, cockroaches, etc. When calling about the mice they said we should have signed up for the "exterminator" that they send. This guy comes once a month and puts down the sticky traps you could buy from duane reade.

Also, there is no such thing as a super in this building. Our "super"s number was always disconnected. Therefore there was never anyone to help with any maintence problems. My roomates celing was caving in, our cabinents broke, we had no number on our door, etc. All problems that there was no one to contact.

As for the actually contacting someone at the company, forget it. They lost my rent checks, they said I was "late on rent". As mentioned above, for any problem we went to them for the just either hung up on us, didnt return calls, or was told to sue them.

Worst experience of my life.

I'm in the throes of a fight with them about 503 E. 73rd St. The super is a deadbeat and Moses is clearly a slumlord. The buildings are not even up to code. Have filed countless complaints and all Henry Moses says is "sue me". These people are real scumbags.
The super, Danny, doesn't speak English - I'm assuming he's not even legal, based on the other illegal things Vanderleigh does. And the receptionist, Roberta - what a cow! If you want to put yourself in a situation where you feel like banging your head against a mold-ridden wall while the owners laugh at you, by all means, rent from these clowns.

Marilyn! I live in 503 and I HATE the people that run this place. I DIDNT EVEN KNOW WE HAD A SUPER! Noone has ever told me. I am so annoyed that the only person I can talk to is awful Roberta because they wont give you anyone elses number. And the maintenance guy is rude; I told him my buzzer was broken and he asked if I pushed the right button. And maintenance cant fix my buzzer its an electrical problem anyway! I had a lawyer friend tell me I can technically withhold rent (just because of a buzzer issue!) which I may do.
I hate them! aaa!

They finally got written up: "Galron Realty is owned by the Moses family, headed by Henry Moses Jr. Galron bought 114 East First Street for $5.2 million in the summer of 2005, according to the city’s Department of Finance. The Moses family owns several real-estate management companies around the city through Vanderleigh Properties, based in Tuckahoe, not far from Yonkers.(The company’s sparse website says that any similarity with the fictional Vandelay from “Seinfeld” is pure coincidence. Their subsidiaries all bear “Star Trek”-inspired names: Galron, 7 of 8, Borg, Praxis, Vulcan, and others.)"

Have had nothing but trouble with them since moving out. They refuse to return our security deposits even though there are no damages to the apartment and say it is our responsibility to get it from the new tenants who have moved in. The new tenants will no pay and Vanderleigh couldn't care less. I have not lived there for 2 months and have not yet seen a dime of my money and they now hang up on me every time I call. The receptionist Roberta is a horrible woman who doesn't know anything about renting laws, and Angela Moses is lazy and willing to rip you off at any chance.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. ONLY LIVE HERE IF YOU ARE PREPARED TO LOSE YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT IN FULL FOR NO DAMAGES. They are truly terrible people.

Do not rent from this landlord company!!!

As previously stated, they own numerious run down rodent and bug infested buildings all over NYC.
Our apartment had a bed bug problem and we were forced to pay the high extermination costs (when they deducted it from our security deposit).
We had nothing from trouble day 1-things that were never fixed in the apartment, a super that supposedly lived near by but was never reachable. The woman in the office, Roberta, was extremely nasty and refused to forward any problems, concerns onto the landlord. Take note of the properties they own (in one of the above posts) and avoid them at all cost!!!

This is the worst management company I have ever rented from. They took money out of my security deposit for and did not give a reason. When I called they said the apartment was dirty which it wasn't. They neglected to perform any repairs we ask them to and we finally had to call public housing. They are horrible horrible horrible people. Do NOT rent from them!

MOST HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT COMPANY EVER. This area to small to go over how big of A**holes these guys are and how they mess around with people. I would make an extra effort to post this review on at least few other forums, coz it would satisfy me if I get discourage even 1 future tenant, coz Vanderleigh properties really really sucks.
1. Rude Staff
2. Poor Maintenance
3. Crappy buildings
4. You can never reach the right person to talk to, they talk via messengers
