I am a little concerned with who is on the Health and Wellness Rec Center committee. I haven't seen the list of committee members, but have heard who is on it. Some are legitimate...however some are young adults that have just moved back to our community recently. How are they qualified exactly to make decisions for community that they haven't participated in, in several years. Is it because they are related to other members? Really? There are no others in this wonderful community who would offer just as much if not more? I'm slightly confused who chose the chosen ones to be on the committee??

I bet if you would express interest and ask, they would be more than happy to have you on the board and give your insight and support. They aren't going to ask everyone in town if they want to be on the board. I'm sure they would appreicate your enthusiasm and support.

On another note, I am happy they are looking into this, but unless it can be done without saddling my family with a bunch of extra taxes for the next 20 years, I don't know if I would support it. There is a reason most communities our size do not have something such as this. It is just too expensive. If they can devise a way to make it work and make it cost effective to tax payers, I'm all for it.

Get involved in the grass roots discussion-- a really good way to find out more about the project and realize what the proposals are about. A project like this always has to start with a few people and grow to include anyone wanting to get involved! Call some of the people you have heard were on the committee and volunteer. I am sure they would like to all possible input!

I'm sure they would be glad to have you if they reached out. I'm not too happy with the color scheme they chose for paint, it seems as if the board is overpowered by very feminine people. I would have rather had some broken machines fixed, such as the lower row (neccesity, as opposed to "want")

What was wrong with the previous paint scheme?

I don't think we need a million dollar plus Rec center. There are many elderly and other people who would not use or benefit from having to pay increased taxes on such an endeavor. I am health conscience and would like to see some improvement on what we have currently, but within reason. But hey , maybe you all like paying higher taxes!! Take alook at the committee behind this , it's the yuppies and the wanna bees... I'm just saying. Fresh air and sunshine are free....Take a walk or ride a bike...

Take a look at the use the Mid Town building gets now. Sure see a lot of people using it. Doubt if there are a hundred keys out to it. If they aren't using it they won't be using a new one. Well, people will go out to it to see what it is like then they are done. Probably as many out of towners using the Mid Town building as are residents of the city. Besides the huge investment to start with, there is the upkeep to maintain it and someone will need to be there to keep it from being tore up or trashed. The initial cost is just a beginning. I am not interested in it and vote against it. If I want to exercise I'll do what My Hometown suggested, fresh air, sunshine, walk or ride a bike. I like that....

I second My Hometown's opinion. Now if the city is going to build this and then tax the citizens it gives me even more motivation to run for office here. This idea is noble but totally impractical. In the last 50 years I have been associated with Sabetha there has been 2 major changes....a new skate park and a ball diamond. The first is rarely used and is old hat, the new ball diamond is exclusive to American Legion only. I know the ball field is a private facility but how about getting a SHS team together and let them use the field too!...NOPE not going to happen. And this leads me to the main point about this sleepy little town. It seems that the only things allowed here are those that the "establishment" gives the green light to, the other is the religious sector that also plays a huge role in progress in Sabetha, not knocking that group but they do prevent a good share of new things from becomming a reality here.

The priorities here are so far out of wack, for example...there are streets here that have not been touched for decades and many in serious need of repair. Well the reasoning is "money" or lack of it to be precise. So how about this little idea since they have no issues raising taxation for a rec center that will no doubt be a seldom used place in good time....USE the higher tax revenue for better streets!!!....Then once we have nice streets and visitors take notice of how nice the town looks they may.....just may want to open up new business here and in time even a place for recreation....moral...more business brings in more revenue/taxes...THEN build a center from the increased revenues!

The ball field was actually built by Stan Keim, not the city.

May reread the post..."This idea is noble but totally impractical. In the last 50 years I have been associated with Sabetha there has been 2 major changes....a new skate park and a ball diamond. Notice the mentioning of it being a private facility. Meaning not owned or built by the city.

Now the intent was for the high school to use the field as well which would generate some revenue for the school or to be exact, the city.

The ball field may not be used for the school, although I'm sure Stan and Paul would love it to be. However, the state tournament brought in more revenue for the city than anything else I can think of in the last few years, and I'm sure the field will host state many more times to come.

Point well taken! I would be eager to see just how much revenue was generated. The same thing could be said about the HS system using it as a venue for tournament play. Something to consider!

Can you imagine how much business and money this is going to pull in OVERALL for the Sabetha community? People from other towns are going to come over and sign up for the gym, therefore bringing business to the gas stations, businesses, and the rec center! Plus, it will give kids something to do during the winter months in order to exercise and enjoy! I, for one, am looking forward to a pool that is used for exercise purposes. If you don't like the idea, protest it. If you like the idea, help out! I'm doing it! I think this would be great for the community and families alike. Sabetha is a very fitness friendly town and to have a place for all of that to pull together would be amazing! Get up and get fit!

Could we just stop the negativity untill we at least know all the details. Nothing kills progress faster than people who do not know what they are talking about being very negative and trying to convince others to act in the same manner. Please! Lets try to see what is good for the community and the children.

Nothing kills a commnity and it's progress faster that people being negative and attempting to convince others to feel the same way. Information first- then opinions! Give credit to the people that are attempting to share a vision for the future. This town will die without it.

Joan makes a valid point but so does the opposition.
To assert that this would bring in so much revenue and people from other towns is just an opinion as well, no factual info to make the arguement. I cannot speak for others not in favor but can back up my position which is if taxation is going to be used to fund the center it should be done after other city needs and issues are solved. In my arguement, streets are the main issue. This would help the community and those who visit.

I suggest a meeting be held to offer both viewpoints then let the process move on.

we the committee take anyone interested in Sabetha to be on this committee. It is NOT a rec center but a wellness center with an indoor pool which the elderly WILL be able to use as will anyone. It is to have Zero grade entry. Why don't you all get on the website befitsabetha.com and get the facts

The Seneca pool loses money every summer. FACT

The Rec Center would cost more to maintain than it would bring in.

Lets fix the Parks and Rec Dept before we bite off more than we can chew

Skatepark anyone?

Apparently the building of "aquatic centers" in Seneca and Hiawatha have caused the people motivated to out do other towns to come alive.

We don't need this behemoth if it is funded with taxpayer money. If an entrepreneur wants to build this with his/her money that sounds fine to me. I don't want to pay for something that I probably won't use.
