Build it - need to expand the ways traffic can get on and off of Long Island. What if there was a general evacuation called - LI would be totally gridlocked.

I couldn't agree more. Without capacity for trains we will be missing a critical opportunity to alleviate additional congestion. Any proposal that moves forward through the planning process should consider capacity for providing enhanced rail service to New England.

Why not build a Rail system, too? Or only build a rail connecting the LIRR to MetroNorth.

Sorry Ray, but we're not getting off the island through a tunnel if the hurricane is causing flooding and strewn debris. Water seeks its level and underground is the last place you'll want to be.
Uh, Genius...I think the idea is to evacuate before flooding starts.

Yes, water seeks it's level. Good job Bill Nye. Since the elevation at the end of 135 is over 200 ft above sea level...If a hurricane flooded long island that bad, we'd have no worries, cause it would be the end of us all. I'm sure the developers are smart enough to not put the other end of the tunnel at sea level or below either.

we need more ferry services across the sound.

for anyone who's ever been on the northern or southern states when there is an accident, you know that there is no where to go = your stuck.

people need to think of evacuation plans to get off the island without their cars.
train and ferry service would be the most logical way, but than again, how do we get to the train and ferry stations, hummmm, god forbid if someone would have to walk a mile or twol.

Thank you! Stop being so naive. This tunnel will bring MORE traffic to the area and MORE people. Build it and they will come.

They're still coming, whether you build it or not. Traffic levels are expected to rise dramatically by 2020. Existing highways and crossings don't have the capacity to deal with those increase in traffic. This tunnel would be a great way to increase capacity as well as add more public transportation off the island. This tunnel alone won't solve the traffic problem, but this along with another crossing or ferry station like at where they would have been built at the Shoreham Power Plant site will help a long way.

I don't know about anyone else but being underground for 16 miles is daunting to say the least. And the $25 toll as well. Also, they seem to be talking of only cars not trucks going through this tunnel. I for one don't think I could stand to be underground for that period of time. They should build half tunnel half bridge.

Actually, the governmant has every right to take their property via eminent domain, as long as it's for public use, which it is.
