They need to add sterilization drugs to all these pain meds these girls are taking. It is so unfair to the babies who have to go through withdrawls and to the taxpayers who foot the bill. I truely dont understand the stupid women that can do this to a innocent child. While the babies suffer the pain the so called moms get out and get high. To bad they arent made to suffer too.

I have been a nurse for 41 years, and I hav seen so much suffering and sorow from drug abuse.
My mother was an alcoholi before my birth and I was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
It cause me to be a weak, sickly child, but I was determined to be better than the hand that life had dealt me.
As a younger nurse, I often cried myself to sleep knowing the hard life these drug addicted babies were to suffer.
I had wanted to specialize in pediatrics, but found the emotional burden too great.
Still, after many years of nursing and being a nursing educator, I cannot understand why any woman would or could place their baby in such terrible danger of having a hard life.
Shotly after I was born, my parents were saved from their sins, and my mother gave me a great deal of care, perhaps out of guilt or sorrow.
I never held my sufferings against my mother, as I well know that sinners ar not alys responsible for what they do.
I am sorry for any chld who suffers for what their parents have done, but God warns that the sins of the fathers will be visited on their children for several generations.
I, too, wish that mothers could be more responsible about pre-natal care toward their children.
Education and peer pressure from family members might help in some cases, but restricting the behavios of drug abusers and limiting the access to 'street drugs' seems to be the more positive route.
There are plenty of examples of what illecit drug usage can cost, but some people seem to be powerless to stop themselves from addiction to these harmful substances.
I don't know what it would take to keep a drug-addicted mother ferom harming an unborn child, but I hope that some message might reach them, and cause them to think more of their baby than their hunger for poison.

The mothers and fathers get off scot free. They may get the kids took from them to i dont think botherssomeof them. They see it as a get out of jail free card. They dont have to pay childsuport and still get to see their kids whenever they want to. What is it again they are doing to punish them for this?

Unfortunately, this is an all to common problem. Not only are children being born addicted, they are facing a life time of neglect. Even if the addiction is caught in a newborn and reported to authorities, children are given back to the parents after they take a few parenting classes and complete rehab. This works for very few addicts and they most often go back to the drugs the day they are released from rehab.

Laws need to be changed to protect the children. I believe that every baby born should be tested for drugs. If a newborn tests positive the mother should be thrown in jail for child abuse on the spot. Children and babies should then be removed from the parent and not returned until they complete at least one year of rehab and counseling. Then they should be tested for another year.

This is a problem that turns my stomach.

The placenta is tested in every birth, in the entire state of TN, this is law. It has been in place for at least two years. Channel six WATE in Knoxville did a piece on this just last week. The amount of babies born addicted has increased dramatically, I do believe the rate of increase was 20%. There is a link on their page to the story. If discovered at birth, it is so much better for the baby, as said child will endure the withdrawals just as any person would. The majority now are addicted to pain pills. It is sad, and sickening. Why do these women get pregnant, when they can get birth control free at the local health department. This is a disgrace, but it is fact!

I missed that on the news, thanks for informing us. It is good to know some law makers are trying to do something about this. I agree that it is a disgrace.

I pray that something legal can be one about this ever-increasing problem.
These children are physically limited and troubled throughout their lives, and they are guiltless.
I pray daily for them. It is a heavy cross to bear.
I'm glad to know thyat other health-care providers are speaking up about this.
Thank you, NICU Nurse.

Well, when society makes it SOOOOOOOO easy- I mean, food stamps, free health care, yada, yada, yada....America is really pathetic in so many ways. We reward bad behavior. Here, have another kid for free....oh yeah, did I mention it is free and we will increase your food stamps..Sell hem if you need to so you can buy whatever you want. Society will take care of you.
