This woman has created an empire with these books about witch craft. Now she is going to have to explain to millions of children what GAY means. What was the point behind this revealing secret? HOW will parents tell their children what GAY is all about?
What a shame? I think she could have just written another stupid book instead of this

The reason she outed him, which many people are missing the point, is because it explains WHY Dumbledore acted as he did towards Gellert Grindelwald and his views. This is an important revelation, establishing motive.

Why does everyone have to throw in the gay bit...now this...I don't want my grandson who loved the book to see this..we haven't even explained to much to him about sexuality...She should of kept her mouth shut and not thrown this in...I am disgusted with her for making a statement like this..I used to be a fan but with this not so much anymore....Gramma does Dumbledore DO men....BROTHER!!

C'mon, we knew what a "Qweer" (obvious miss-spelling) was by the time I was in 4th grade and we used that term freely in jest to refer to most all our buddies. To each of us, it was just a funny reference to another of the "guys" but we had full knowledge of its actual meaning. Give kids some credit, they aren't as naive and dumb and dense as most of you adults have been lulled into thinking. You aren't protecting the little guys from anything they couldn't probably explain in detail better than you could.

i'm a 24 yr old who has read all the books and i never thought that he was gay by reading them. i may not be the only one who must have missed it but i don't think that a child would have figuered it out. i have no prob with it but if a child wouldn't have picked it up then leave well enough alone.

I think it was a brave thing to do, revealing this. She's a smart woman and she knows the backlash that this will cause in the fan community. She already has the most conservative people after her because she writes about "evil" ideas like witchcraft as it is.

Her fans had a question and she answered it honestly. What's wrong with that? I don't think she meant to make a "thing" about it or use it for a stunt or she would have done it a long time ago.

And to those of you who are afraid this will damage your children and don't want to explain it- it never comes up in the book and you wouldn't have known if she hadn't said anything. Ride out the "shock" about it we're hearing now and let it go. The children will be fine. They're going to experience sexuality diversity in their lives. You can't shelter them from it forever.

The only way this hurts you is if you want your kids to believe that homosexuals are horrible people.

As opposed to all of the bad guys in the book who are killing everyone left and right? Murdering is fine for your grandson to read about, but a character being gay isn't?

To me the books don't seem to be appropriate for kids not yet in middle school. Especially the later ones get very in depth. Kids are having sex now in middle school, parents had better have a sex talk with you kids around that time. Kids like to experiment and I would have a gay talk with them too. If you don't want your kids to find out what gay is from their friends then you better tell them first. There are much worse things in this world. Maybe this coming out will be a comfort for gay children who feel lost in the world.

So, even though the story is over, she should give up any artistic integrity and drive this thing into the ground for money instead of being honest about her characters? Nice.

If it was that important, it could have been mentioned in the book. My guess is that they did not want a potential loss of sales. Some folks tolerate witchcraft and wizardry much better than homosexuality.

Everyone relax. It's okay. We're going to be just fine. It was a story, and this was a facet of the personality of a character. The world is not going to explode, and the sun will rise again tomorrow.

The media have picked up on this story for one reason and one reason only: outing celebrities (or fictional characters in hugely popular book series, in this case) equals readers/viewers/listeners. Otherwise, it would have just been an interesting tidbit for the Potter fan base.

As lover of literature, I'm quite disappointed with how Rowling handled this. Gay, straight or indifferent I have no problem with JK giving her characters whatever traits she likes. However, a good author would have made this known in the text if she wanted it to come out. The text should speak for itself. By speaking outside the context of the novel JK is just writing fan fiction. Great literature always causes debate, always begs the reader to connect the dots and to come to a conclusion. I support her stance on tolerance, but I do not support her stance on being a poor author going after publicity.

The same way they tell their children what STRAIGHT is all about: age-appropriately.

Let me guess... are you one of those people who stands one the side of the road with their kids and church holding anti abortion signs? Because I would rather explain to my kids what being gay is than tell them what an abortion is. People like you are the downfall of this country.
You seem to have mixed up priorities. Why is it that anyone who supports being gay, seems to think abortion isn't extremely wrong. It is killing someone who is innocent, & hasn't had the chance to live & make choices, as all of us are given. As an adult, & this day in technology~ we All know what Abortion is unfortunately. I doubt Gramma would explain the specifics, for even as an adult the facts are too hard to take. But this Topic is about an Author revealing a secret about her character's sexuality. Don't attack Gramma for being surprised. It only took how many books to reveal this? Not a good way to gain public appeal...

I have no problem with gay people, but they can change if they want to. There are ministers that can help them - the author should have the character get the proper religous training that we as good Americans offer to make the gays straight. I am tired of Europeans telling us what to do, just because the Euro is so strong. We are number 1.

The books were written to be age-appropriate - from age 11 for the first book to age 17 for the last. And if you haven't taught a child about sex by the time they are 11, you've waited too long. Ignorance does not protect, and it only encourages discrimination of all kinds.
