No, unfortunitely, there was a fatality. Such a tragedy. From what I understand, he was a very good driver. From Indianapolis and very experienced. Things can certainly go hay-wire at times. Sad news.

I hope this tragedy sends the Corps Of Engineers a STRONG message to finally stop this dangerous activity brought about by one of its commercial vendors on the lake. The poker run promoters are exposing other lake users to needless death and destruction. Why should State Dock have the exclusive monopoly to profit from this event, but also expose other lake users to potential danger ? If these people want to go fast and risk others let them go somewhere else.

Too much speed and all those boats dont mix.I hate to hear when anyone loses their life but I am sure the guy knew the risk weather he did or not does not matter now anyway. The lake is getting smaller every year in a manner of speaking because there are more and more big go fast boats.I do think it is to risky with the water being so low to try and squeeze so many big boats going in excess of 100mph with what I am sure some very in novice drivers at the controls.I keep hearing how good a driver the person that crashed was there is a big difference in a good driver and a trained professional. The part some friends and I dont understand is the boat that crashed was starting in the 60mph and under class yet was reported to be running 110-120 mph apx 2-3 mins after the start when it crashed.I was always under the impression this was not a racing event but more of chance for boat makers to showcase the boats that they sell.In my opinion the event should be put off till the lake is back up to safer levels and regulted a little better.I do hate this had to happen the state dock brings in a lot of tax dollars for russell county and puts a lot of soup beans on tables not to mention all the kids that get their extra money working therre. But you cant blame the state dock for someone being careless on the water which may sound harsh but was most likely the cause of the senceless death today.

I really feel like for one week-end out of the year, everyone could show some intelligence and watch this from afar. Every year people get out in their little boats to watch. It is much to dangerous for so many spectators to be in the way. Sort of like having people on the track in chairs during a Demolition Derby. My prayers go out to all involved. I hope everyone learns from this and makes it a safer event.

I love hanging out on this Lake! I was at the lake today when it happened 1/8 mile from the wreck, I have to say too many boats to close together, water was too choppy with white caps, many people were drinking. I enjoy watching the race, heartbroke for the family of the racer. I do not think it is a good ideal to have all those boats on the lake so close to the races, watch from the edges of the lake, I seen a jet skier right in the middle of the lake when the boats were racing by him........

Well first off it was two guys and the one who was killed wasnt married and had no kids. The only thing I thank god for was the fact he didnt kill someone else other than himself. The locals around here put up with the rude assholes all summer on our roads then to top it off we the locals can not even enjoy our own lake because the same rude asses are so dam reckless and dangerous on the lake.I always hear tourist dollar this and tourist dollar that but somehow we all seem to make it thru the winter just fine without that almighty tourist dollar.Yes what happened was both tragic and moronic at the same time.It seems anyone with any kind of foresight would know better than to be running 130 mph with the bank only a few feet away 50 boats in front of you and 100 spectaters on the outher side of you duh.

Amen, I'm tired of all these idiot tourists coming in here, acting like we owe them something and trashing everything they come in contact with. The corps should put a 60 MPH limit on the lake and do away with all these idiots who come here only because we don't have a speed limit.

It's a lake, not a racetrack.

You and your friends are not paying attention. The boat that crashed was in the first of 6 groups, the 110 MPH and above group. The lowest speed class is for those boats running less than 70 MPH, and they were scheduled to leave the dock 25 minutes after the fastest boat class.

it was nothing more than an accident. just the same as if me or you were to have a car wreck. get real people life must still go on. and no one is at fault. and as a matter of fact everyone should be paying some respect to the owner's of the dock and the employees that had enough morals to call the actual event off do to respect of the family of the man who died in the crash. so please know a few facts before posting crap.

It was a matter of when anyway .Should it be stopped I cant answer that the lake is lower and maybe a safe way of doing it next time would be to only let one heat at a time make their card rounds then let the next heat go.130mph is a bit fast for the now smaller lake with so many people along the poker route watching but thats just my opinion. But please keep in mind poker run day is not the only day that careless boaters are on the lake the old saying is so true that some people have more money than they have sence and some on this lake have more boat than ability to drive safely. This past tragedy does make me wonder why even moped riders in most states have to pass some kind of rider skill test to ride yet there is no kind of test to pass or anything else to drive a boat on the lake much less ones with over 1000hp its just crazy in a way.Add to that a few too many shots or beers and it really gets scary and makes one wonder how we get threw the summer without hearing about more accidents on the lake than we do.

Just like race said above. It is a boat race. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife reviewed the accident. It had nothing to do with spectators being in the way and in fact the spectators were safe.

The lake is still HUGE and there is plenty of room to run the race it was not because of being in a narrow channel. The boat that wrecked simply was planed off to a point where there was no room for error. He was trying to catch up to if not pass the lead boat and when he crossed the lead boat's wake he chine walked and the boat came down onto one of the front sides hard blasting a hole into one of the catamarans. This boat has been used a lot and I am sure the fiberglass was fatigued some and thus may have blown out easier. That hole then allowed water to shoot down the inside of the hull blowing back out the back of the boat and causing the boat to stop and flop very fast thus throwin the driver and passenger out.

It would have happened if no one was on the lake or even if they were in the ocean as long as the same crossing occured.

Our prayers are with the gentlemans family and friends and lets keep the Poker Run coming to Lake Cumberland!

I agree that the lake is huge and there is still plenty of room for this once a year thing.I agree that many of the tourist that come here are rude but the majority of them are nice people who are just trying to have a good time.I've been in the tourist business most my life and do ok,we can't be running these people off.
The guy who died was doing something he loved and I can't think better way to go in doing just that!

Crazy Boaters & Voice of Reason: Show some respect! If it weren't for the "tourist dollar" you wouldn't make it through the winter, or you would probably be living off the government.

Most Russell Countians DO NOT make any money off those rude tourists who often endanger local people driving drunk on our highways and operating boats drunk on our lake poker run weekend. State Dock is owned by outside interests from INDIANA who take the big money back to Indiana and pay locals MINIMUM WAGES while they exploit our area year round.
