Is it just me or does 85% of Russell Countians live on "WELFARE" and "FOODSTAMPS". I really hate to say it but from what I have seen since I moved here, there are way too many people around here that are lazy white trash. Russell County does not grow whatsoever and it seems everyone here is in someway disabled for some reason. I can hardly believe that such a small town has so much corruption and such a high rate of people living on Government Assistance. Russell County will only become worse from what I have already seen here. I feel sorry for most of you who are permanetly fixed here for life!!!!
not from here either

Excuse me? Some of us that are disabled it is because we had to do back breaking work because of the few that won't let the economy grow. They like slave labor, and some of us don't have any choice but to work for them. They only pat minimum wage with no benefits or hope of advancement. The only ones that advance in their "company" are their relatives or lap dogs, by lap dogs I mean the ones that are willing to take a fall for them. Russell County has every potential that they need to grow and prosper, but we have a few that wants their hands in the till of everything that goes on here. Until the people get angry enough to stop them, nothing is going to happen here.

That is exactly right! No one twisted MY arm to move here! Doubt if the one who started this nasty thread had theirs twisted, either! I also doubt if it will be long before they have to apply for some type of help because ppl like that usually don't get too far in life on the easy street!!

Now those same greedy ones running everything and working people for slave wages have resorted to illegal mexicans to supply their slave labor needs. They have made Russell county the new destination for illegal hispanics showing up here now overwhelming government welfare services .

Sorry to disappoint you, but the poor mexicans are a disposable labor force, if they get hurt on the job they won't say anything, therefore no workmans comp claims. That also puts more of our people out of work and in need of assistance. Don't tell me you wouldn't sign up for assistance if you were hungry and in need.

Look at the local newspaper court dockets with all the illegal hispanics in court each week driving without licenses or insurance. All these mexicans are here as a result of greedy local employers exploiting hispanics cheap labor. Check census data 20 or thirty years ago and hispanics were unheard of in Russell county. Hispanics are here as a result of greedy employers making this county a destination for them.

Most of you will never understand. You have never had anything in your lives to compare this place to or ever had a job that pays any "REAL MONEY"!!. I can hardly believe a county with 120 Churches and such a High Rate of Welfare & disability that there is any need to grow. Look at Pulaski county it grows!!!! How can so-so many people become dissabled when they have never had a job to become dissabled from?????

I do not know what the percentage on Assistance might be, to answer your question "Not from here". But I had to run into Kroger on Sunday evening while I was out town & was frankly shocked to see the store full of what "appeared" to be those on assistance. And I only say that because the majority of the folks I saw appeared unkempt. I'd heard a statement before about the lack of cleanliness or neatness in a lot of those folks but that was the first time I'd witnessed it firsthand. I don't get it.
I actually felt a little out of place there. It took me awhile to realize, oh heck, it was the first of the month. Which explained what I was seeing. But I do not think there is ever a reason for anyone to look or appear in such disarray. Soap is still pretty cheap & we all have access to water. A comb or brush is cheap too. No excuse to look like you just crawled out of bed.
I'll admit it was hot here & even I was a bit sweaty. But give me a break what are those folks thinking when they go out in public like that?
I wonder if you called them "white trash" because of the way they present themselves? I can see why that thought would come to mind.

Then of course, the lines were very long & slow because of very full carts. But I can't complain about that because I ended up getting more than I planned on too, mine was mostly non food items.
I do know the cashier seemed surprised when I put it all on my "credit card" instead of one of those freebee things.

I get that folks need assistance. Some folks anyway, but please people clean yourselves up before going out.

If you're really from Maryville your perspective is really quite odd, bizarre, and inexplictable.

That's disabled stupid, and yes most of us have had a job. A job going nowhere because there are no jobs here worth having. Let this county prosper and even some of us that are disabled will try to work. To get a job worth having you have to leave here and go someplace where there is prosperity. There is a great need for this county to grow. There has never been anything here that pays "REAL MONEY", but there could be.

I know a someone who is trying to get welfare due to his current state. But I guess five crushed vertebrae doesn't qualify someone to be disabled, does it?

41 years I've lived here and never had assistance from anyone. I understand if you cant work due to health reasons but the facts are that this place is a joke! WAY TOO MANY CHECK DRAWERS!! Stinking, Mountain Dew and Skoal Toothed Imbeciles that cant speak correctly much less write. Funny thing is during election years they become highly religious and against gays and growth etc. The Republicans with all the money win! They just flat out win! You cant fix stupid and as long as the right is has them fooled they will never have anything. Go friggin' figure?

its ok to ask for assistance but to live off it is unacceptable....lets just say most of the backwoods hillbillies aren't as stupid as you think since they know how to work the "system"
