Shame on Rusk County Citizens

I grew up in a small town in the North, where if one of our own were killed in battle, we honored them. They were fighting for our freedoms and gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. When we buried our soldiers it was with all the fanfare befitting a Hero. We had firetrucks leading the procession, we had American flags on every corner, and whoever it was, they got the entire front page of the newspaper. I had to go to Marshall today, and went through Tatum which is where our Rusk Co soldier was from. Other than flags flying in his families yard, you would have never known that this man had lost his life in Afganistan. US Army Sgt. Alejandro Granado III. What has happened to our compassion for our fellow man. Do we have so much hatred in our hearts that we can not honor those who have honored us? Where is our VFW's and American Legions? To make matters worse, when I got back home and looked at the newspaper, I was livid. One line? One line? Thats all that was written. But 4 men stole some meat from Kroger and got half a page. Then I find out that this man had retired after 22 years and went back on a special ops when he was asked. Thats a Hero people. I think we should all take a moment and think about what he and his family have sacrificed for us. My Father was retired Navy and my Husband is retired Army. I feel very ashamed of the way we here in East Texas have handled this matter. If anyone out there can tell me anything that our local community has done to honor him, please post it. I really dont want to have to feel as though we have become so complscent(?) that we cant honor our fallen soldiers.

I could not agree with you more on this subject. I have several nephews whom are in the military and can only pray that they come home safe and sound. I can not imagine what this mans family is going through. Not only to loose your loved one in battle, but to not have the community support that they so deserve. I can not help but wonder though if his name was Smith or Jones, if his family would have gotten a little more sympathy. I have noticed in the media that if the name is Hispanic, they dont get as much coverage as a Smith or Jones. I also noticed that the Longview and Tyler stations gave this more coverage than did our local paper. It is a crying shame that people dont honor the soldiers more. Again I agree with you. Shame on Rusk County!
