How old is Grandma?
(Read this to the end-- quite an eye opener.)

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end... It will blow you away.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother
About current events.

The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought
About the shootings at schools, the computer age, and
Just things in general.

The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute,

I was born before:

 television
 penicillin
 polio shots
 frozen foods
 Xerox
 contact lenses
 Frisbees and
 the pill

There were no:

 credit cards
 laser beams or
 ball-point pens

Man had not yet invented:

 pantyhose
 air conditioners
 dishwashers
 clothes dryers
 and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and
man hadn't yet walked on the moon

Your Grandfather and I got married first, and then lived together.
Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir."

And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man
With a title, "Sir."

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and
Wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was
A bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Cont

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with
Your cousins.

Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the
Evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the
Evenings and weekends - not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks,CD's, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk.

The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.
We had 5 &10-cent (5 and dime) stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could
Afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:

 "grass" was mowed,
 "coke" was a cold drink,
 "pot" was something your mother cooked in and
 "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.
 "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,
 "chip" meant a piece of wood,
 "hardware" was found in a hardware store and.
"software " wasn't even a word.

We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.
We volunteered to protect our precious country.
No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap.

How old do you think I am?

Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

Are you ready?????

This woman would be only 59 years old.
She would have been born in late 1952.

...and blacks had to ride in the back of the bus. Yeah, 1952 was great if you were a white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant male.

Pretty much intolerable for everyone else.

What's scary is the selective memory of Tea Party types. The past was not all that great. The present is where it's at, man!!!

(And the future is going to be even better. Trust me.)

This tired piece of nut job teaganda has been circulating the internet for years.

And GBA probably just received it in an E-Mail today....his friends are that far behind the times.. and again, he posts it with no source. Not that it matters, it's mostly a bunch of BS, anyway.

Let's take a look at "Grandma's story"...

First of all, the big, exciting "shocker" at the end reveals that Grandma was born in late 1952.(*GASP*) OK...late 1952...

Grandma claims she could've bought a NEW ford coupe for $600.00. Well, by the time Grandma could have driven , it would've been around 1968. The average price for a new car in the year 1968 was no where near $600.00. More like $2500.00.

And GBA's Grandma claims the price of gas was 11 cents a gallon. Again, WRONG. The price per gallon of gas in 1968 was 34 cents...more than three times what Grandma claims.

Or, maybe Grandma started driving and buying gas straight out of the womb?

Grandma had never heard of McDonald's, which was established in 1961, when she would have been 9 years old....poor Grandma had a short life, but wait!....if that were the case, then how was she having this conversation with her grandson??!!!

According to her, the term "making out" referred to how you did on your school exam. Well, Wiki tells us that "making out is a sexual euphemism of American origin dating back to at least 1949........."

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Grandma.....

Instant coffee was invented in 1906.

Pizza Hut was founded in 1958.

First Day Care: New York Day Nursery, est. 1854.

Group Therapy? See princeton.edu for the following: "The founders of group psychotherapy in the USA were Joseph H. Pratt, Trigant Burrow and Paul Schilder. All three of them were active and working at the East Coast in first half of the 20th century."

I could go on. But I think I will stop with Grandma's idea that, "Having a 'meaningful relationship' meant getting along with your cousins."

That explains a lot.

Actually I save many things and pull them up and use them when I wish. I also get things over and over and many of them are worth reading again. It might surprise you to know that I've keep some of your old postings, if you know what I mean. This piece showcases just how much we have lost at just being good humans to one another and how that way of life was more wholesome.

Yes, that would surprise me...it's kind of creepy. You know, I wholeheartedly agree that we shoul all be good to each other. And it also surprises me to hear you say that you posted this BS propaganda piece for that reason.

It's kind of hard for me to believe that you truly feel that way after reading some of your recent comments. It seems as if you are angry and bitter and that you opinion of women, and anyone else not JUST like you, is at an all time low. I sure don't see you on here spreading the love and trying to be good to others. What I have seen is a lot of cruelty.

Just my opinion....take it or leave it.

Something to think about.

How many of our parents and grandparents told us that "life was better when I was a kid" or words to that effect? Don't you think that their parents and grandparents and so on and so forth said the same thing throughout the ages? Change is difficult for many who become comfortable in their set ways. This is not to say that some of the set ways were bad, wrong or even unproductive but, for virtually everything, change is inevitable...inventing that better mousetrap so to speak is part of being human.

I disagree with that. Yes we have punks and crime,...but so did past generations. I see a new crop of kids who seem to be much smarter and enlightened, who don't judge others who are different than them. This country is going to be fine without all the "stick-in-the muds" who are so prejudiced, opinionated, closed minded, and hate any change at all, even when it brings positive results.

The real good old days.

Child mortality was high. In some areas one out of three children died before turning eight years old.

The largest cause of death for women was complications from giving child birth.

Wife abuse (wifebeating) was sky-high. Child abuse was sky-high.

Alcohol abuse was sky-high. Which probably explains the rate of wife and child abuse.

The year with the highest number of teen pregnancies (nationwide) was 1957, not now days.

If you needed a hospital you had to drive 50 to 100 miles to get to one.

Country women had anywhere from eight to fifteen kids. The husbands might find that cool, but did anyone ever ask the wives how they felt about it?

If you lost your job you better hope there was someone to feed and clothe your family and pay your bills until you found another job because there wasn't any unemployment or public assistance.

You could work at a job like a slave for 30 years and if the boss saw he could hire a new guy cheaper he could fire you and there was nothing you could do about it. If a woman worker was sexually harassed, even sexually abused as long as it wasn't rape, she had two choices... accept it or find another job.

If you were of any race except white you didn't get treated very well. I don't think I have to explain that.

Gays were arrested. It was a criminal offence. That's if the police found out. If certain other people found out, the man could be found beaten or murdered.

The long list goes on.
