I have a nephew who has been in trouble with the law since he was 14. He is now 27 and was released from prison (PNM) in time to join us for Thanksgiving. I did not keep in contact with him while he was in prison, but I did go to a large family gathering of which he was a part. He had the audacity to ask me if he could sleep over on Sunday night (two days ago) because he had to go register for job core. I was confused as to why he didnt ask me because we are not close and I think he knows I don't want his influence around my high school aged children. It turns out, the only reason he asked is because jop core is located smack between the SVP and WME. I live very close to the school and was apalled. I did not know this. I don't have children this young, but I would think the village would put this to a vote before they brought the criminal element into our community, our neighborhood and our school. I attempted to complain about the problem mentioning the released inmates/felons who MUST go register at job corp within 14 days of release. What was I told? "Everyone in this town has a felon in a family, you can't say 'no felons on campus'"
???
The parents with small children in SVP and WME are okay with this?

People like YOU shouldn't live near OUR schools.

Why would you invite a known criminal to have dinner within sight of a school yard?

What is wrong with you?

America is a free country and YOU should move somewhere else.

Thank you.

Dear Thug,
Your post makes no sense. Are you for or against felons on campus?
This is news to me, but I will look into it. I can't imagine that it is so.

I would invite Martha Stewart so long as she agreed to cook the food.

It is so. The ENMU job corps campus is right between SVP and WME, and NO, the parents are NOT ok with it.

With regard to the statement that "everyone has a felon in the family" it is simply not true. My family doesn't have any felons.

This is the first I've heard about it, but sex offenders have to go through Job Corp!!!

What the red devil is going on?

Sorry, but this is hysterical. WHO authorized this? WHO would do such a ridiculous thing, compromising the lives of our youngest students by having them elbow to elbow with rapists, child molesters and gang bangers? No wonder the schools are failing. The riff raff is right smack in the middle celebrating their very riff raffedness. I hear they get high right across the street from the school(s). Yep, they walk all over that campus and on and off of it, so much so they leave the campus to take smoking breaks. So bones, thugz and harmony who could be armed, carrying meth, selling meth, are just right between the schools.

Clearly there has been a fact-check breakdown here. There is NOT a Job Corp office located in the building at the White Mountain Complex, first of all. The office there is the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. And their services are available to EVERYONE. However, they are well aware that sex offenders are not allowed on school property or within the allowed radius. This is a topic that has been and continues to be addressed. FELON DOES NOT EQUAL SEX OFFENDER!!
I am a parent of a child at WME, I am not ok with the proximity of some of the clients of the DWS office to my child's school and have voiced said concerns to College Staff and have been assured that measures are being taken to keep the populations separate.
On the other hand, felons, ex-felons, are still people with rights. The end.

Actually, no they lose some of their rights, like the right to vote. And they don't need to be frolicking in betwixt two buildings that house children! Are you off your rocker, nitwit?
So when a sex offender is released and has to go to Workforce, what happens? Do they meet in the parking lot of Lawrence Brothers?
Exactly. You don't know shit. You don't know the people who are go through this office or the weapons and drugs they carry. This is an at risk school and you plopped a bunch of junkies, hos and vagabonds right in the middle of their playground. Idiots. All for the $. Get that building rented, no matter what the cost to our community. I have heard that police have had to respond to the location and forcibly remove and forcibly break up an altercation.

Petula,

I know more than I can share on a public site.

One of the things I know is how to exercise a little more self restraint and manners in a public forum than you have exhibited here. But if you'd like to meet privately and dicuss what I do and don't know, I'm happy to meet you somewhere, maybe the parking lot at Lawrence Brothers? Or if you'd like to meet with the well- credentialed, much more well-mannered University Board who made the "nitwit"ed decision to occupy the building, I can give you a number to call to arrange that.

Also, another failed fact check, the police have not had to "respond to the location and forcibly remove and forcibly break up an altercation".

The first thing someone who flings insults should know, is what the heck they're talking about. Most sane people in this community know better than to believe ANYTHING they hear.

Has anyone bothered to visit the building? Seen the student art show? The Orange Nights exhibit that was an opportunity for community members to come together through art after the Little Bear Fire?
How about the adult who never had a chance to learn to read and it is possible because of the adult literacy program or the local student that was not successful in high school and needs a GED to get a job and not be a drain on society?
How about the person who lost a job after 20 years and needs help and training to move on. That's what is going on in that building!

If you had been paying attention, you'd have read that I too am a parent. Of we two parents, I am the one who voiced these concerns to people who could do something about it, rather than slinging uninteligible insults and cuss words from behind my computer within the safety of my home.

I clearly expressed BOTH sides of this argument. You, however, decided to be selective about what you wanted to address and criticize me over. I'd call your narrow-mindedness the "dog" in this fight. I will, nonetheless, accept your concession.

And again, for future reference, when you come onto a public forum and call people "nitwits", and tell them that they're "off their rockers" and "don't know shit", THAT is the dog fight. You were right to concede.

The problem is no one should be poppying by a school campus! School campuses should be secure, in particular from the criminal element.

I regularly wander the halls at WME, where my child attends school. I am never questioned or id'd, and I have never had a criminal history checked on myself or my spouse.

The schools are not safe.
