Will we meet with our elementary and middle school on Monday morning to discuss this tragic event with them? Are we prepared as a community to respond to such an incident? Our the police officers in Lincoln County prepared? Is it time for an active shooter drill in Ruidoso and Capitan?I hope this tragic event is a reminder that all school districts must train, not just the inter city large schools. I call on our police departments to meet next week and to discuss our preparedness please.

The police do hold regular active shooter drills. Unless we build a prison wall around the schools with metal detectors and armed guards, there is no way to prevent this from happening again.

I do believe the more we talk about the shooter, the more glory he receives from other wackos that may decide this is their way of getting attention.

Really Joe, when was the last drill? Here is what I have been told: The formal active shooter program has been presented one time, and one time only several years ago in Lincoln County, at ENMU.

You are wrong Joe. Much can be done with school design and progressive thinking to minimize, but perhaps not totally prevent such tragic outcomes. A common thread of almost all these shootings is that the shooter takes his own life before or as soon as he is engauged by law enforcement. No different in the Conn shooting. He ended his terror when he knew he was going to enguaged, as LE officers rushed into the building. Think about that one fact Joe and its potential ramifications related to the possibility to minimize fatalities.

If we are going to train, please plan it on a day when we do not have a photo shoot scheduled at the station.

There has been active shooter training several times this year with both Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs. They police departments do not always publicize all their trainings.

If you would like to meet me at any school, I can show you many ways to enter the campus without being detected. A deranged person could create much havoc before the police could respond in force and end the terror.

Yes there are ways to minimalize the outcome but most people now are talking about preventing this from happening again. I was just pointing out that there are no campuses that I know of that will keep this from happening.

When active shooter training is done correctly, you do not need to publicize. Most everyone in town knows it is happening. It involves the school district, fire and EMS, utility companies, municipal representatives, the school building(s), LE agencies and most importantly, THE KIDS!!! The intended population is intended to benefit as much as law enforcement. ENMU conducted a formal training at all their NM campuses in 2009-10, including at the Ruidoso campus. There are hundreds of other links to other formal active shooter training programs that have been done in other school districts around the country.

Minimize adverse outcomes. Consider the approach outlined in this interview (itÂ’s worth hearing the guy out to the end):

Saw our cranky old Mayor on ch 13 tonight ranting about his ban on guns. I am not a gun user or collector. Just do not have the need to own one. But watching this blow hard bitch about people who do own them makes me want to go buy a few of my own.

Mayor, grow a personality.
