Will we meet with our elementary and middle school students on Monday morning to discuss this tragic event with them? Are we prepared as a community to respond to such an incident? Are the police officers in Lincoln County prepared? Is it time for an active shooter drill in Ruidoso and Capitan?I hope this tragic event is a reminder that all school districts must train, not just the inter city large schools. I call on our police departments to meet next week and to discuss our preparedness please.

All police officers should know the layout of every school in the district, not just the officers with kids in the schools. Especially now since the police are expected to enter the schools immediately upon arrival and move aggressively toward the shooting, and not wait for other police officers outside. This must be an annual or even biannual training requirement for our LE officers. All teachers and administrators must be required to participate. Let us now work together as a community to do something positive and everything that is possible to prevent or minimize potential impacts in response to this tragic situation.

Fear mongering is not piditive. What you are suggesting is common sense, but not positive. Positive is teaching your children to respect all people and all life.

Fear mongering? What in the hell are you talking about? Listen to the news tonight Tina...the president and all leaders of our country, including police chiefs nationwide are advocating a much more proactive and aggressive approach to this problem in order to stop or limit the repeat performances we now see almost on a weekly basis. And if it was all common sense Tina, why is there so much talk right now about the hundreds of thousands of schools in this country that are not prepared for such a tragic event and have never been trained in these matters? And why did my son ask me last night what he should do if it happens in his school here in Lincoln County? Fear mongering? Really? Are you suggesting that it can not happen in Lincoln County? And anytime a life can be saved through planning and careful thought it is a positive thing for humanity Tina. Do you have any children?. Your blog is very disturbing to me and for that reason, I am blogging for the first time. And it is this type of attitude that creates apathy...and the "it cannot happen to me syndrome".

People who are mentally ill and/or psychopaths sometimes do not respect all people & all life, so it's in our childrens' best interest for our law enforcement agencies to do serious training, which is NOT fear mongering, it's common sense.

This exceptionally disturbing event shows the tragedy that can occur in "gun free" zones such as schools.

This harkens back to Ruidoso Mayor Alborn's decree to ban weapons on village property. A crazed lunatic could attack on village property and be ensured that no law-abiding citizen was armed. A literal bloodbath in the making.

As long as Alborn "feels" safe, eh...

Have you visited WME? Its a maze.very poir and unsafe design.
I don't kniw why the ct gunman drove to the school, but we have criminals and thugs on campus on a daily basis due to the greedy decision to put a workforce solutions office on an elementary campus. You want to train, fine, but get those deviants and muscreants off school grounds.

Pray this holy day for our brave teachers. Once again we hear stories about how these brave role models have laid down their lives for their children. Yes, every evil mind knows that schools are gun free and that is why this evil occurs on our school yards. If we, the greatest country on earth, the United States of America, do not have the determination and wisdom to place a police officer in every school in this country, then I pray that the lord will give us the wisdom to allow these teachers to protect themselves. And God bless these children.

What are you suggesting? Arm the little kids?

Nobody should have a gun anywhere. Nobody. It's the only way this "greatest country on the planet" will become the safest nation on the planet. NO GODDAMNED GUNS!

The truth about gun control is that the lobbies, graft, and payolas that come from the manufacturers and distributers of guns are what keep guns in the hands of people who should not have them. The NRA is bought and paid for by the same greedy corporations. Does a corporation sleep well at night in the face of the killing of defenseless children? Do the lobbists who are well paid to carry the dirty money and "gifts" to our congressmen sleep well?(you know, the ones WE elect) Of course they sleep well at night.

By the way, I have searched repeatedly for any mention of lobbists in the Constitution-can't find it anywhere. How did these bottom feeders slide into the Capital and essentially take away our access to our elected officals? They pay and are paid disgusting amounts of money for access-the common voter can never compete with that.
Gosh, maybe there should be a cleansing of lobbists?

On the same day as the shooting above, a madman rushed into a school in China and sliced up children with a knife. Do you want to outlaw knives too? What about other tools people use to commit murder: rocks, crowbars, axes, vehicles, fists,...

Liberals think man is inherently good and that inanimate objects like guns kill people. Reality is quite different and is much more disturbing.

Thanks real, you've inspired me.

Inspired me to renew my membership in the NRA as I let it lapse several years ago. I encourage all of you to join the NRA now. There's never been a more dire time. Those who wish to take our guns will jump on these recent events as a reason to. That, coupled with our current President and the liberal media, will set things in motion for the most restrictive gun control laws our nation will have ever seen.

These horrible shootings keep taking place, and they keep taking place in gun-fee zones like schools and colleges. I agree we need gun laws...laws which allow the general populace the unrestricted right to carry guns. Laws which allow principals, administrators, teachers, professors, and all free and law abiding citizens the rights protected under the 2nd!

Join the NRA as they need the support right now to help us fight this fight. No one entity can be as helpful in this faight as they can.

Thanks again real

I like my odds against rocks, knives and fists a lot more than my odds against an automatic rifle. I do not like the odds of two classrooms that trap little kids inside against multiple guns with ample ammunition. Every young little body had up to 11 bullet holes. Should we really insist on weapons that give such an advantage to murderers? At least cut back on legal arms to 6-shooters and single shot dueling pistols, not AK-47's and weapons for soldiers and SWAT teams. People who insist on owning such weapons do not want to protect themselves as much as they want to inflict the most loss of life in the shortest time, and the mere attempt to purchase such guns should raise a red flag that somebody wants to commit murder.

We can try to outlaw guns, but I think that would be disastrous. With the amount of guns in the hands law abiding citizens it would cause a revolt unseen since the late 1700's. I think any reasonable person would revolt against a government that wants to remove their self defense. The Conn incident proves beyond any doubt that government cannot protect anyone. Don't fall for the crap the lamestream, communist, liberal media is going to try and feed you.

Not accepted. I have never in my life held a gun in my hand. I will never take another life with any form of weapon, even to protect myself.

Not everyone lives in la-la land. What would you say to Channon Christian if she were still alive? You'd probably suggest sweetening the bleach with sugar to make it go down easier.

"Channon's death came after hours of torture, having suffered injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth. She was raped with an unidentified object and beaten in the head. It was also reported that her body was scrubbed with bleach which was also poured down her throat, in an attempt by her attackers to remove DNA evidence, while Channon was still alive."
