To Parent I am not buying what you are trying to sell. I really think that NM has no clout with the major textbook makers in that only Texas,NY,and CA have books that are geared to them and all the other states have to suffer .It IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! end of story. If NM could have the money to have books made for them and then test to those standards NM would look alot better.I really think you are being unfair to these people.
Where can we buy those great California books? And lets not tell anyone else we are buying them so we can be rated as high as the California schools, and no one will know how we did it.

So our only problem here is we are using the wrong text books? Really? That should be easy to fix.
No the problem is that here in NM we are the least aligned with what is being taught to what is being tested.Texas is very aligned with the tests in relation to the textbooks .As far as the new school rating system it was just a way to avoid the sanctions that were about to kick in from NCLB that is why I think it is bunk.If all the states had their stuff included in the textbooks the kids would not be able to lift them.I think someday we will have kindels and flashdrives.I think we would get better discussions on this topic if the adminitrators would come out and speak directly to the parents insted of talking down to us .I think the parents would step up with more support as oppesed to anger.

My daughter has been home schooled and she uses the same internet classes available to anyone on the web and the same books as the rest of NM (even though she is far ahead of the class she would normally be in if she attended Ruidoso Schools) and she tested in the top 2% of the coutry. She has an average IQ. Books? Really? The reason she is home schooled now is she was not being taught, not because of what she could have been taught.

Everyone knows that the new system is bunk. The problem is that the kids are not really tested on what they are taught( here in NM).In other states the kids are taught to the testing,so they look better, even if they are not better in relation to the other states.I have to wonder why anyone would come here to Ruidoso and be treated this way.If I had a high level of Education I would not want to destroy my carer by working in Ruidoso.I also notice that evey year the schools are expected to do the impossible then when it doesn`t work they want to fire someone .It is unfair and I hope it will change.!
Then perhaps there are at least two school board members, that have been serving on the board while our ratings have slipped over many years, and a superintendent that makes well over 100K per year (and is probably one of the highest paid residents in Lincoln County) that should volunteer to become involved with the revision of the national testing standards (so they are not "bunk"), or perhaps use some initiative and find a creative way to get this school district the correct books so our kids can begin to learn. It is one thing to sit around for many years and b---- about how the testing standards are unfair to poor little old Ruidoso, and watch our ratings slip to as poor as they can now get, but yet it is another thing all together to demonstrate some real leadership in solving the problem. The $8,000 we will spend on recall, or the one million plus we just spent on a lawsuit could begin to buy some new books. Perhaps Ms. Harris can explain to the public why our kids are not rated well nationally or she can provide us with examples of how she is trying to correct the situation. Again, leadership is key.

I read with great interest this morning an informative article in the Ruidoso Free Press by Michelle Perry. She explains the problems in the Ruidoso Schools in great detail and with elegant precision. This is the type of letter I would have expected from our Superintendent or one of our school board members that are insistent on wasting our tax dollars on recalls. She does not mention the word "BOOKS" a single time and she does say thet "there is no excuse for Ruidoso Elementaries to have an F grade". Ms. Smores, I am not buying what YOU are selling and neither does our school administration. Are you in the text book selling business?

The first step in fixing the problem is admitting that we have a problem. Hire Ms. Perry as our Superintendent.

This school admiinistration just must know what is going on then(or won`t say).I sat thru a two hour meeting as a parent in Rio Rancho from Dr Cleveland who went to great length to explain this Alignment problem and the millions of dollars that would be spent to try to fix it.The good news is that NM schools are doing better than they appear to be doing. There are standards, then the materials, then the tests, in a better world one would think that the tests would follow what what being taught but that is not the case.I am not selling anything I am just passing on what I learned.I only wish I could do it better. My son`s school got a B and missed getting an A by 1.5 points .I can`t help but think these problems would be the same in both places.I will read her letter ,thank you for pointing it out.

She is an educator with some obvious experience in running a school. She also seems to know what she is talking about. Who cares where she is principal?

If it will cost millions of dollars to fix the problem in this state alone, I would think that it might be a bit cheaper to fix this "bunk" test you speak of.

I cannot believe that all the states except for Texas and California will need to buy millions of dollars of new text books so we can have a fair rating system nationally. Or perhaps it would be cheaper to force TX/CA to take our test, if we even have one.

How many millions of dollars will it take nationally to create a fair test for all states?

Did the Dr that you listened to charge an admission fee to hear him speak? Sounds like he has been drinking some of the same Cool Aid that some of our school board members are drinking.

Dr. Dumb,

You are not so dumb. We have written a test to rate all college bound students in the US...its called the SAT or ACT. I find it hard to beleive therefore that we cannot also write a fair test to rate all elementary students and thier schools.

OK I give up I found a website that is easy to find It is called rrps.net then go to" common core standards "and watch the videos that would be so much better than the name calling.I don`t have the energy for this!

I went on Ruidoso web site and found that it was not a very informative web site .There was nothing about common core standards or textbooks or anything.I think the comunity would be less angry if it was better informed.Just a thought.

There are many reasons the school test scores are so low.

Herme reccomends:

Meth testing all children for exposure.
Mandatory parent classes for all parents from Ruidoso Downs.

Appointment of one trailer park parent and one welfare recipient to the school board so that the school board adequately represents the school population. Excuse all current members. All.

It's not politically correct but the average and good students are being dulled by being forced to cohabitate with the dumb kids and the dumb kids arent getting any smarter by being with the others.

Given the caliber of parents and parental responsibility in this community, the school year needs to go year round. I'm told parents are forced to buy as much as $100 worth of school supplies for their public education. I would like to see parents forced to donate one hour a month to each school for each child. Again, it isn't politically correct but these parents need to be held accountable for their children's lackluster progress.
