ok so I read the sites from the girls from hephzibah house that spoke of the abuse there. Then I tried to read exposers comments on here but for the life of me could not untangle the jumble of words he kept spewing. Still, it made me wonder if the girls were maybe just a bit disgruntled because they even had to be there.....though I read too many stories and too many details to believe it. Then, I thought maybe expo was trying to say Jeri made up all those stories (I am telling you, I really could not interpret those posts at all). Anyway, I decided to check out hephzibah house's actual website. You know the one advertising the school.

WELL..what I read there just further reinforced the horrible stories of abuse I read earlier. The student testimonials were all positive EXCEPT they were very defensive and made sure to state what DID NOT happen. Read it yourself and tell me if you think just by the way the testimonials are written, they appear to have GUILTY written all over their faces there.

i see what you mean, the place is gracious enough to let them write to their parents(and required to write their pastor) once a week. a few were NEVER abused physically or mentally & 2 actually stated they weren't denied food. isn't that just wonderful. one even talked about the private counseling & how there were even private showers, unlike public schools. in public school there is no need to shower at all, as the kids can go home at the end of the day. very spooky, indeed. what type of idiot parent would send, or permit to be sent, their daughter to that place. they even have the opportunity to work in the garden. wow. commune, anyone? many children go through a rebellious stage, i know i sure did, but being a parent is just that, being a parent. mine weren't the best as they worked all the time & weren't there except to punish me when i did wrong, which happened on more than one ocassion, but i didn't turn out so bad & neither did either of my sisters. why would anyone send their child off to be brainwashed,abused & molested? this place has "cult/commune/brainwash " written all over it. thank you for the heads up.

Dave Hyles, son of Jack Hyles, who created the Mecca of Fundamentalism at First Baptist of Hammond IN, where his son in law Jack Schaap now reigns. Dave Hyles was expelled from Miller Road Baptist Church for committing adultery with over a dozen women, and who was charged with abusing the child and later was declared the prime suspect in Brent’s suspicious death, continued to preach for “Hyles Man” Bob Gray of Texas, then became a member of church staff at Pinellas Park Baptist Church in Pinellas Park Florida, pastored by Everett Farris. He was later expelled from there for adultery with several different women, and his church secretary became a prostitute. He then became a member at Berean Baptist Church in Orange Park Florida, pastored by Tom Neal and was then expelled for adultery, and then he became a regular attender at First Baptist of Jacksonville, Florida, pastored by Jerry Vines.

Russell Hirner convicted of Child molestation. He was the Christian School principal in Bob Gray’s high school, a “Hyles church” school.

Jim Vineyard, charged by a pastor with describing lewd sexual acts to a young lady (sexual harassment; not a crime because Vineyard “counseled” in private, although the Scripture clearly directs that private counseling is to be from older women to younger women). Vineyard has yet to deny the charge, but he did call the preacher who confronted him “buzzard puke”.

Andy Beith, Hyles-Anderson gradyate and former meber of FBCH, then principal of Liberty Baptist Academy in NW Indiana – sex with an 11 year old girl. Sentenced to 30 years, parole in 11. Previous arrest for contributing to delinquency of a minor when caught partially dressed with a 15 year old girl.(Las Vegas Journal Review May 9, 2001. By J.M. KALIL and RYAN OLIVER. Contributions from Associated Press).

Beith’s father, William Beith, also a graduate of Hyles-Anderson and a former member of Hyles’ church, First Baptist of Hammond, was arrested for soliciting an undercover officer in a local park. William Beith was also arrested on suspicion of exposing himself in public.(Las Vegas Journal Review May 9, 2001. By J.M. KALIL and RYAN OLIVER. Contributions from Associated Press).

Kerry Martin, a Hyles-Anderson College former student, former member at Hyles’ church, First Baptist of Hammond; expelled from Jim Vineyard’s Oklahoma Bible College his senior year, never prevented or confronted for taking a pulpit. Preacher at Temecula Valley Baptist Church, was sentenced to nearly 206 years for molesting a teen-ager, a prolonged affair that lasted 20 months. Three others stepped forward to declare that they also had been molested by the preacher.He was prosecuted in Riverside County, CA by Assistant District Attorney Deena Bennett and sentenced by Judge Russell F Schooling.(Reported in Press-Enterprise, RIVERSIDE CA, Joe Vargo, Reporter)

Calvin Stone, a Hyles-Anderson College short timer and former church member sent to prison for molesting a little girl.

Russell K Overla,a Hyles-Anderson College graduate and former member at Hyles’ church, First Baptist of Hammond. He was the pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church in Cedar Lake, IN. Overla pleaded guilty to molesting an 8 year old girl.

Chester Mulligan, was charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor for molesting a 14 year old girl.“Authorities allege that Chester Mulligan, 58, now of Fort Sill, Okla., first had sexual intercourse with the girl, then 14, in July 1997. They say the abuse continued until June 2001.”(Indianapolis Star.“Former East Chicago pastor faces sex charges.” CROWN POINT (IN). Associated Press. December 30, 2003). Mulligan was considered A “Hyles Man”, at one time running his ministry in East Chicago very much in the style of Jack Hyles. As of 2004, Mulligan was pastor of Miami’s Grace Baptist Church and Academy in Florida. An unverified source says he has denied the charges and alleges that his accuser was promiscuous. Like Shifflett and the others on this list, he remains “KJB”.

Pastor Joe Combs,(found guilty, also defended by officials from Hyles-Anderson College) Former Hyles-Anderson Faculty member. Raping and molesting his adopted daughter, the woman formerly known as Esther Combs. Her story was covered in detail by ABC’s Prime Time Live on October 18, 2000. Click here to read the transcript. A former member at Hyles’ church, First Baptist of Hammond. Joe Combs had been a member of Hyles’ church and a Bible teacher on faculty at Hyles-Anderson College, though at the time of his arrest he was pastoring in Bristol, TN.

Evangeline Combs (assault, not sexual). Wife of Joe Combs, participant in cruel and abusive behavior against her adopted daughter. Former member of Jack Hyles’ church.

Craig A Sisson, former pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Otto (Arnold) Missouri, and a Hyles-Anderson graduate was convicted of a single count of first degree child molestation for his actions against an 11 year old girl, the daughter of church members. He was given a one year suspended sentence, five years probation, and had his ministerial certificate revoked. He is not certified to carry out pastoral duties in the state of Missouri (KSDK News Channel 5, St Louis Missouri, and Poynter online)

Administrator Joseph R. Strang, Assistant to the pastor (well, now FORMER Assistant to the Pastor) at Lighthouse Baptist Church, Gloucester NJ. Charged and pleaded guilty to “fondling a 12-year-old male on various dates between September 2001 and September 2002…and…digitally penetrating a 14-year-old female in April or May of 2002. The pleas were entered on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in front of Superior Court Judge John T. McNeill III. The attacks against the boy occurred at a residence in Camden. Charles Shifflett, an honorary doctorate of Hyles-Anderson and a self-professed Hyles man, turned his church’s school into a gulag where the boys labored at cutting down trees, sawing lumber, selling wood and other hard labor tasks, allegedly to earn money for the school. Shifflett was charged with reckless endangerment for playing games with the lives of the boys. He was also charged with indecency based on accounts of molesting at least one girl and sodomizing boys. Shifflett left his church and started a new one a couple miles away, built on the model of a Hyles church, where his “loyal” church members insist that whether he is guilty or innocent, they will follow him. Shifflett pled guilty to the seven felony counts against him. Six were reduced to misdemeanors. He is free. Currently, Shifflett faces new counts of fraud and embezzlement. His trial is set for July 2008.

Jason Burrick, a graduate of Hyles-Anderson College, has not committed a crime, not legally. He has the dubious distinction of ruthlessly taking over Allen Baptist Church in Hillsdale Michigan by promising to adhere to the church constitution, and then abrogating it and chasing out the elderly members who opposed him. He conducted an excommunication of 71 year old member Karolyn Caskey while she was in Florida. Upon her return, when she quietly refused to leave the church, he had her arrested and removed in handcuffs. He repeated this the following week when she returned. The local Prosecutor warned him not to do it again and gave Caskey leeway to attend the church as long as she raised no disturbance. Burrick then used his preaching to try to goad an objection from her and actually jumped up and down on the pews. All to no avail.[1],[2],[3]

Jeremiah Owens, son of former Hyles-Anderson VP Pastor Jeff Owens, and a former student at Hyles-Anderson, has pled guilty to two counts of sexual assault. Though Jeremiah’s criminal history included previous counts of burglary in Indiana, for which he was on probation and previous charges of a sexual assault in Kentucky which were dropped when the alleged under-age victim would not testify, Jeremiah Owens entered his father’s church, Shenandoah Baptist Bible Church without the necessity of church discipline being applied to him. He was free to do as he liked and he found his victims, ages 13 and 15, at the church. Now having pled guilty, he continues to be excused from church discipline. Members insist he is actually innocent, and the victims are evil.

Chris Settlemoir – I’ve lost count of all the charges. He’s a graduate of Hyles-Anderson. He stepped into the pastorate at Antioch Baptist Church in Michigan. He also became principal of the Christian school. Both at the ripe old age of 26. At 27, he was behind bars on charges of molesting and attempting to molest adolescent boys.
