The Royal Oak Fire department needs to look into ways to save, preferably beginning with the top, however the most senseless and insulting to the professional EMS Paramedic is the considered use of private transport EMT instead of trained paramedics who can be lifesavers by using on the spot stabilization in serious conditions such as a heart attack. They have the ability to transmit with high accuracy to the hospital what will be arriving.
Royal Oak makes through insurance about five hundred dollars a run, they do not pursue for payment those who may not have such insurance saving you the citizen potentially a thousand dollars for one transport. Those with chronic conditions may require numerous such transports and to force them to make a judgement between their pocketbook and a lifesaving ambulance ride is unconscionalble
Royal Oak EMS generates up to a million dollars from ambulance runs that go into the city's general fund. This would be lost with private ambulance potentially costly to the patient. You would think it should remain with the fire department however this is a universal practice in cities and many townships using better trained paramedics with advanced life support adjunctive to their fire fighters.

The bottom line is always the same with most, if not all, cities.....if they stop selfishly spending on administration, they would have enough funds for the police, fire and EMTs. Administration is usually the highest spending dept in all departments because they are greedy.
