MANY years ago there was a Ruth's Grill. It was at the corner of I believe 20th and State. It was a really small place. The building is gone now and the area is now the parking lot for the Steelworkers Union. Wow Im surprised that anyone remembers that place.

The grill next to the taxi stand and Washington theater was Cliffs grill. Leaders was across from Cliffs as well. Ruth's was at the corner of 20th and State. I think you are right 1958 granite lady. We could certainly make some suggestions. Remember going to Woolwort's? I loved that place. My dress I wore to May Day when I was a senior came from Marilyns. I loved going downtown on Saturday afternoons. My grandmother took me to Leaders to get my first Girl Scout uniform...Ah the memories.

Unfortunately the building is gone. It is just a parking lot for a local union hall now. Not knowing how long you have been gone from the area, but many of the "landmark" buildings are gone. Leaders, Cliffs, Woolworths. It would be nice if the downtown area would come to life again like it used to, but Im afaraid those days are gone.

i don't live that far out of granite so i can go back often enough that i have seen those buildings and more being torn down. how sad. i heard that at one time it was discussed to turn downtown into another area like the Delmar Loop. that would be awesome, except until the right businesses come back, it is a long road to the revival of Granite City.

The city doesn't seem to be able to attract "substantial" businesses into the area. The theater downtown does not seem to attract much business either. It really needs a well known anchor business to move in and I dont see that happening.

Parking for one thing is an issue I'm sure. Is Stoppkottes skating rink still there? they need some businesses that will keep kids occupied and something for parents to do. mayor needs to look at close areas and see where granite people go to. keep tax dollars in granite. of course people are different now than when i grew up. I was afraid of the police therefore respected them BUT... I was more afraid of my parents. Kids aren't like that now. It's like a badge of honor to go to juvey/jail. It's so sad...

Downtown GC has plenty of thriving business still. There is still protution, and drug dealers that will never go out of business.
I too remember going to Woolworths and wasnt there a place called Lord Nelsons?

Carps, PN Hersh?? Hudson Jewelry was on the corner. OMG now I remember the restaurant it was accross the street, and they had a chalk board they posted the specials on. I do remember it now. Grahams bookstore.
Morris Reality, was down there and the POWER company was down on the other corner. We used to go on Fridays, my mom paid all her bills in person back then and sometimes we would go have a coke at Woolworths.
