Is it just me or does it seem that a lot goes on at Baldwin Park Unified School District that has little to do with helping our children? In this newspaper alone I have read at least three articles speaking of criminal acts of employees, school board members and officials.
I once worked for the BPUSD. It was a well oiled machine then. If someone did wrong they were dealt with not covered for.Supervisors made sure everyone was working not napping under trees and theiving school property. It seems that the criminal element out on our streets has inflitrated the interior of our school districts employment system. Could be the hiring-firing system is broken or hiring friends who are not qualified????
It has only been three years that I have been gone from BPUSD and I have this to say... the so called slush fund that these articles speaks of, well, it has only been in existance since 2003, it has NEVER paid for one single birthday or retirement b.b.q, nor has it paid for special tools or blueprints or any of the ridiculous things stated by the so called supervisor, foreman or secretary, all of whom have had their hands in the cookie jar and many people working in the maintenance department know that. Pat Healey the foreman, has taken hundreds of dollars from the fund, Olivia Ambriz the secretary who was just awarded a huge amount of cash because a man spoke to her the same way she speaks to everyone, well, she took a few hundred out to take her kids to Disneyland and there are more than one employees including the department supervisor, Mike Atkinson who know for a fact that she did. What the heck is going on over there??? Sounds to me like they need a huge house cleaning and get some people who really want to work in there. Not rob our children in the process of their self service.

I currently work for BPUSD and agree with the comment posted here. There is so much corruption within the ranks of the district. It is a shame that so many decent people who do their work and keep their noses clean are shouldering the load for so many who could care less and who rob the district blind. For example, a maintenance department employee was just arrested last week for theft of thousands of dollars, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars of school property. He has been let go, but with his retirement and nothing less. Nice, don't you think? I, myself have become pretty disallusioned with BPUSD and await my time to float away into retirement.

It isn't going to do you any good to complain or report trouble here, or at work. It is best to keep your mouths shut and just mind your business. To much retaliation and back stabbing by officials when you try to do what's right. I'm not sticking my neck out and I know a lot about the first posting here. I have seen several good men fired for standing up for what is right in the district. That slush fund, for example. They all lied, every one of them lied. The men who lost their jobs may be better off but don't know it yet. Instead they each remain depressed and inable to move forward. While the officials go on doing nothing to better the environment but cover up for the slackers and thieves.
Don't waste your time here. They will do nothing, they don't care, you are not important. BPUSD is corrupt from the inside out.

Hey I saw all that stuff they brought back from Fred's house. Can you believe that? What the heck was the department heads doing? Sleeping? Sure makes them look like a bunch of idiots. There is so much talk about these fools around the entire city. I have a friend who drives a bus for them and she says that the supervisor and foreman in that department are real flakey, not real great character in either one of them and that no one in the entire yard has any respect for them. She has seen the foreman himself loading stuffon his personal truck and leaving for the weekend. Golly, wally, wonder if he was doing a district job or maybe, just maybe he was working on his own home. Who knows, but I have heard these men are pretty spineless. But hey, they have a couple pretty nice new football stadiums, that must account for someone's good hard work.

When I came to bp 17 years ago, it was all about who you knew. Then came Dr.Susan Parks (have you seen the article about how she turned around the San Gabriel School District?. The teachers were allowed to teach and make decisions at their school sites together. Supporting each other and being treated like a prefessional were the norm. How well you did your job mattered and you felt appreciated. School board got rid of her right away. Now, people laugh at me again when I tell them where I work. You have to always watch your back. Administrators are kept young (inexperianced)and moved regularly to avoid any teacher loyalty. I LOVE my students or I would not have stayed for so long but I am so sad everyday. I always wanted to retire from Baldwin Park; but another 15 years being treated like an idiot...

Before you deify Susan Parks, let's remember that after her departure there was a serious spike in API scores throughout the district.

There are NUMEROUS problems in the district. While there are a handful of truly remarkable, caring, and amazing teachers, classifieds, and administrators, the "norm" are what you could call "career educators." Meaning that their career comes first, education comes second. Moreover, "teacher loyalty" should not be what is important, contrary to sad bp teacher's statements. As a resident and former student of the BPUSD, I don't want my administrators "loyal" to teachers--I want the loyal to the RESIDENTS. I want them to encourage teachers, push teachers, and inspire teachers.

And of course, when you have the type of money involved as there is with running a disrict, you have people that will do everything they can to take advantage of the situation.

Election time is up in November. Make change from the top down. You have one board member who must be near 80 years old and hasn't had a child in the system in decades (unless you count his adminsitrator daughter who seems to land any plush assignment she wants, and always seems to sidestep discipline for her missteps). You have another member that I question whether she even lives in the City(when was the last time you heard of someone owning a "summer" residence, but renting their primary?). Another board member whose family has moved to anther state and it appears that he has at least mentally "checked out" from the process (in addition to a farce Ph.D.). Another board member who rarely attends meetings, has only held jobs he's gotten through the political process (cronyism), and has gone on record saying that we shouldn't have too high hopes for BP students because of their socio-economic backgrounds. In fact, the only board member who appears to give a crap about the status of the schools in the City, has been accused of all kinds of crazy things, by the VERY people he calls out for misappropriation, called a "gang member," falsely accused and villified for so-called sexual harassment (Ambriz's chief complaint: "I didn't like that this guy would come in and tell me how to do my job.") I guess no good deed goes unpunished in politics.

It's time for everyone who really cares to stand up and say, "we won't stand for this anymore." I for one have had it. Back when I was in school, it was frusterating to have maybe 3 out of my 6 teachers every year actually seem to care, instead of just pushing paper for a pay check. I was able to succeed despite this, but if we dont' do something, there might not be many students that can say the same thing.

How sad you all sound with your tales of woe. The district is corrupt, supervisors are bad and I'm the only one who does a good job? My, my, my. Sounds like more comments from a batch of "victims" that has become quite common in society today. Maybe you should be in another profession! At my school, the teachers are great, our aides and custodian are super and we love our principal! Pehaps that's because we take responsibility for our lot in life and make it a positive, rewarding one?

FYI. At my school, the teachers are great too, our aides and custodian are super also, and we happen to love our principal too, as well as take responsibility for our lot in life also BUT.... We are only TWO SCHOOLS in a district of 17,000 students.... and if the idea that our district is corrupt, employees are stealing, not being held accountable and the fact that this has been going on for awhile does not concern you.... you might want to open your eyes past the fences that surround your campus (for your students' sake).

Sounds to me as though you should pull your head out of your fanny and acknowledge what's going on under your nose. NO ONE here is talking about teachers, BPUSD has some of the best teachers in the nation. All of this is about Department Heads and Administrators who are not qualified to do their jobs. Do you know that there is a "janitor" who is making 6 figures doing absolutely nothing. In fact it is the dapartments he is supposedly heading that are in question here. It was this "janitor" who made quick friends with Tony Bejarano, and pal'ed around with him daily telling people what to do, watching and hearing all of the illegal goings on of this man allowing it all to happen, women to be victimized, district resources to be used, employees to be intimidated. YES, it's you Mike Orona, you and the half brained idiots you have as Supervisors and Foremen in your department who are to blame for this deterioration. BE PROUD, and to the author of this last comment. Wake up.

It is my belief that no good will come out of this or any other change unless the change is made in total It is time Baldwin Park shook all of the fleas out of the carpet and started brand new. For the sake of our children, please get rid of Bejarano, and his pocket mouse Sergio.

BRAVO! Very insightful. Do you know how many corrupt money deals go on throughout the district. Money going to cell phones, gasoline for vehicles that select district employees drive home and some as far as the river for family vacations. Money spent on redecoration offices with only the best of furnishings,(look around tyour classrooms, wouldn't your students benefit from nicer surroundings)how about contracted jobs going to pals extra high bids so extra monies can be shared? Then there is the topic of raises....well?

FUNNY ADDITION MR> BEJARANO JR. do you really believe that anyone who ever came in contact with your father would ever read this and not choke back busting out loud with laughter. HA! What a joke this comment is.
I agree that BPUSD does have some of the finest educators in the Nation. You won't work with more dedicated people anywhere. "Loyalty" as you remark, should go to the students, the community and our teacher's. Not to Tony Bejarano who has walked through his life with a chip on his shoulder and an ax to grind with BPUSD. His reign of intimidation must be stopped NOW.

Been there....
Sorry about your situation.

Sounds like mike (the janitor) orona has always been UNABLE to stick up for people in his department. Seems like he and Sergio practice the same religion "Do only for yourself".

The employee that recently got let go "Fred"... seems that he is just another victim of mike (the janitor) orona's religious beliefs, "do only for yourself". To think, this guy was convinced that if he "resigned" no charges would be brought against him....

Whatever happened to the days where the maintance department had NO TIME to steal, read the paper on the job, and bs with secretaries and office staffs while on the clock... Seems to me that since board member bejarano was told he cant go on school campuses to check the grounds (which i dont get cuz i thought he was elected to monitor the schools, curriculum and that means facilities also) the school sites have started to looked unkept...some restrooms are looking bad, gates left unopen on the weekends, sprinklers and lights left on all hours of the weekend.... Well, just another example of mike (janitor) orona practicing his religion "Do only for yourself"
To think, the janitor even sold his soul when bejarano wouldnt practice his religion...and now the janitor has been seen driving around the superintendent and ex bp high principal.... Word of warning! the janitor (the ex marine with a DIShonorable discharge) will throw anyone under the bus if he thinks it will help him!!!!!!!

I have to agree with bpteacher... another insightful and truthful comment. Mike The Janitor with the Dishonarable discharge will throw anyone under a bus.. he is only looking out for himself and...eventhough he may seem to help out his family with summer jobs..he won't let them get promoted ... whats wrong Janitor.. think they will expose your "real ways" "your dirty little secrets"? Do your job.. our schools are looking dirty again! I think you can still keep your "driver posiition" .. but windows are scratched/grafitti everywhere, playgrounds/slabs are ripped up, floors are coming apart, gum everywhere,... at that is just at my school.. janitor..do your job..isn't that why you get more than some teachers?
