Yeah, sure. The story is that "gee, they
(the dogs) never did that before. I just
cannot understand why we allow large and very
muscular and potentially lethal animals
within our midst.

We live across from Modjeska park and keep a shap eye out for the pit bulls that are walked there. So far, they have been leashed. As few as two dogs can constitute a pack and act aggressively toward other dogs & people. The Shih Tzu didn't have a chance. This article wasn't clear about where the pit bulls were released. As written it sounds as if they were released into the Shih Tzu's yard! What unnecessay heartbreak for the owner of the Shih Tzu.

When are people going to learn that it can happen to their dog too?!?!?! I carry a stun gun every time I walk my dog now. I dont have to hurt another animal that might try to attack my dog, and I feel safe to take my dog out. Stun guns are very very cheap on ebay. And well worth the money to keep your animal safe.

I'm always worried when I walk my dogs about coming across pit bulls (especially more than one). I carry pepper spray but don't feel that it is sufficient enough protection. I just told my husband yesterday that I want to start carrying a club with me on my evening dog walks. I don't think pepper spray would stop a pit bull attack, but hitting them as hard as possible with a club might. What a shame that people can't walk their dogs without fear. I'm sick of pit bull owners saying that the breed isn't more prone to aggression, that it's "how they are raised" that is the only determinate. Studies show that pit bulls are more aggressive than other breeds, they have a higher tolerance to pain, and they do not give up in a fight.

Let's face it -- people who choose to have violent, inherently off-kilter dogs like pit bulls are usually a little crazy themselves and they want the thrill of a dangerous dog. That combination -- unstable dog breed, unstable human being -- engenders the behavior that results in most of these attacks. I call into question the right of the dregs of our society to breed killer dogs in their back yards. Put them all down.

I appreciate your point of view here, but I have to say that a stun gun would probably be of little use to save your dog from a team of pit bulls even if you carry it in your hand and not in your pocket or a bag. These lethal attacks on small dogs happen so very quickly that you truly have little or no time to react.

My Bichon was attacked 2 days ago. I carry pepper spray, as the dog was dragging my dog(and me hanging on the pits collar) down the street, I sprayed directly in his eyes repeatedly...it did nothing. 3 grown men stomping on him and kicking him in the face, did virtually nothing, except make him let go of my dog so that he could go after them. Animal control did nothing..no shock her in Las Vegas...because the owner was "so remorseful"...

My dog was attacked by a pit bull today in my neighborhood. The people just moved to town from the country where their dog ran loose. 3 days ago it was loose in our yard and tried to attack my step dad through the door. It knocked in the screen door and tried to get him through the glass.

I have an 8 pound 11 month old shih tzu I was walking down the sidewalk when the dog charged and got her by the waist. I held the pit bull by the neck and kicked it about 10 times before it finally let go. My puppy got away with a cracked rib, thank God there was only one.

I used to think the owner made the dog aggressive/vicious, but after experiencing it myself, I want all pit bulls to be extinct.

My shih tzu was attacked today by two pittbulls. They came out of no where, and if it hadn't been for the neighbor, she would be dead. I can't believe that people let these dogs run free. Its sick.
I was still shaking from the experience, what if it would have been one of my three small children?! We were in our OWN yard.

If your little ankle biter was truely "attacked" by a pitbull, it would have done more than crack a rib. The pit was probably just trying to play. You want ALL pitbulls to be extinct? ALL of them? Because of a few bad ones??? You are a moron. My mother-in-laws precious little shih tzu bit my 2 yr old twice in one day. My pitbull sleeps with my grandkids when they are here. Punish the owners and the deed, NOT the breed, idiot.

You are the moron. You let your pitbulls sleep with your grandkids. What you need to understand, moron, is a small dog may bite but pitbulls attack and maul.

SOME pitbulls attack and maul, SOME, not all. Some other dogs attack and maul too, moron. It depends on the dog, I said the DOG, NOT the breed.

On Saturday November 10th my dog was attacked by a brown pit bull while my dog was tied up in my yard. He sustained a few injuries. After my neighbor put the pit bull into a "sleeper-hold" we managed to get my dog free. The "owner" of the pit bull was tangled up in my dogs tie-out. As soon as I got him untangled, he took his dog and fled. I phoned the police and told them what happened, and all they told me was to call the dog warden. this dog should be considered dangerous and needs to be labeled as such.....what if instead of my dog being out there it had been a small child!!!!!!!!!

A dog (I mean any dog) is as only as good as its owner. All breeds have the ability to bite or be viscious at any time, you (the owner) decides that. I have two 11month old pitbulls and take them with me everywhere I go. I have taken the time to SOCIALIZE them with everyone from little children to adults as well as taking them to the dog park for play time with other dogs. They both have recieved Good Citizenship Awards through training. Leaving your dog unattended, out in the yard, all day and night is setting them up for failure. They are part of your family. Isnt that why you got them? Would you do this to your own children? I would like to think not.
