Sounds a lot like this article was written by someone on the "inside".
Sounds a lot like someone is "whining" about being passed up!
WHO REALLY CARES if you're a senior supervisor or captain?
That doesn't automatically make you a LEADER.
Look at the previous Chief who was a GLORIFIED JANITOR -
was he a TRUE LEADER? THINK NOT! Ask ANYONE who is a true COP.

THE TRUTH is the RIGHT MAN was picked for the job.

Nobody questioned Jag Pathirana when HE promoted the Janitor to Interim & then Chief.

So why would anyone question Mitsch? I guess because they believe it's their
birthright to become CHIEF and that didn't HAPPEN.

The TRUTH WILL PREVAIL !

The City will move on and the police department will become a better department!

Sounds like Hawthorne has been cleaning house. Why did Heffner resign so abrubptly anyway? Fager should improve morale at a beaten down department and seems like he is the best person for the job. Community relations will flourish under his command as I have worked with Fager for a number of years on community projects stemming to back to the 75th anniversery of Hawthorne. Fager is an honest man who is well respected by his peers and my neighbors alike. He seems like a leaders leader, not some sniveling wet behind the ears incompetnt cry baby......Can you guys stop ticketing my RV when it sits in front of my house though?

Soory fellas,
But "seems like the best man for the job" is a very poor reason. The Chief's position should require at least a similiar exam as to the captain's exam.

Simply "talking" to other people in the commuity is a lame response as well.

As a City Manager "do not forget" you are respsonisble to the people of this city. A response as lame as the one you made and stated that's what you based your decision on is worrisome.

Most qualified to protect the people of Hawthorne, years of public service, years of community involvement, education, and a little backgroud on Mr. Fager would have been much more appropriate.

I know your responses were to a "reporter" but the reporter is letting the city's people know what you are doing. We deserve better responses and reasoning for your decidsion.

Mr. Fager does meet your requirements of having 20+ years of service and is more qualified than the other people who were considered. The interim chief job is only temporary and no one has really been "bypassed" over for a temp job. No one knows if Mr. Fager was interviewed or not. Mr. Fager is an extremely qualified for this temp assignment and frankly, way more well regarded than his so called competitors. Mr. Fager has answered his call to leadership and is a welcome sign and breath of fresh air for the troops in HPD. The other "leaders" in HPD need to take lessons from thd Fager handbook of leading, commanding, anx showing compassion for his troops and citizens alike. Congratulations Mr. Fager, we have no doubt you will be the best interim chief or chief in all of the southbay area.

Fager is a good Cop and an even better human being. He has a great deal of integrity and is well respected. If anyone can take HPD in a positive direction, he can. This is the beginning of the right direction for the Hawthorne Police Department.

Well done City of Hawthorne. You’ve finally picked a truly knowledgeable, experienced, well-rounded, and level headed communicator for the top job. If Heffner had only a quarter of the qualities the new interim Chief possess, or had even listened to the prior Chief, he might still be there now. Thankfully he’s not. Heffner should thank his former legal advisors at Liebert Cassidy & Whitmore for sending him poorly qualified personnel who apparently had given him wayward advice on how to run a police department prior to his departure. Great job in demonstrating how lawyers can truly ruin just about everything, which included your coveted prior position.

This is welcome news. Fager is the answer to everyone's prayers. Integrity and honor is what is needed in the Hawthorne Police Department right at this moment. Hawthorne will be a better place because of this.

Lt. Robert Fager is the right person to be Chief. Anyone who has met him knows that he has the experience, he is unbiased, deeply dedicated to the Police Department and the City of Hawthorne. Chief Fager will not play politics with the City Council.I am confident Fager will bring back the return of the once independent Police Department the City of Hawthorne once enjoyed. Congratulations are in order for the residents of Hawthorne as well as Lt. Fager.

Awesome news to hear about Hawthorne and Fager. This must be a great time to be a Hawthorne cop and citizen! Fager will truly bring accountability and might truly evolve HPD into a "21st century" PD. Sorry Heffner, you and your cronies in the HPD failed to accomplish anything positive during your tenure. Those pleather gunbelts sure look good that you made everyone wear - they did wonders for you Heff - very slimming. Oh, that's right Heff, you never wore a gunbelt! Hope retirement treats you as well as it has for me - good luck!

Hawthorne obviously has some problems. Perhaps Lt. Fager was picked for the top job (Chief) because he has the courage and knowledge to do what is right. Time will tell. I hope the best for the men and women of the Hawthorne PD.

Good Luck Chief Fager. Set the tone quickly and get buy-in from your supervisors and command staff. If they can't get on the train with you, send them packing. There is no room for undermining, and if someone tries, deal with them swiftly and harshly.

Chief Fager is an excellent choice. I hope he dumps the law firm of Liebert Cassidy & Whitmore who seek to cause issues with employees only to charge the city more legal fees. This same firm gives Torrance PD bad advice causing employee problems and cost the tax payers millions.

It looks like the sun is finally shining over Hawthorne again. With the old city manager gone, the old chief gone and the mayor soon to be gone, the city will hopefully be able to function properly. I'm sure there are a few more people that need to be weeded out, but that will only come with time. When you have a great law enforcement agency that can finally run properly, their great investigators I'm sure will soon ferret out those who need to be out. Look for more "abrupt" resignations to come soon !

I still don't know why there aren't any comments from any rank and file personnel. Doesn't HPD have a protective league or police association. Did Larry try to reach out to anyone?

What a joke promoting a LT to chief. This smacks of "good old boys" getting together and picking their own chief, or east coast politics buying the votes and using force to get their guy in office. Why even have a formal testing process? Yes, the real truth will come out when this chief discovers he has to make some tough decisions which might make his "buddies" not very happy. Best of luck LT, oops I mean chief, you are in for a wild ride.

Interesting, but wasn't that the case with Heffner too?

Too bad people like The Real Truth and Karlheinz don't have the smarts to STOP and THINK, before they open their yaps.... Just in case they didn't read it... Lt. Robert Fager is appointed as `Interim' Chief of Police... That means until a PERMANENT candidate is hired to fill the position.. Is he a candidate for the PERMANENT position... only HE knows for sure...

Don't get all excited, Adam Henrie. Our friend here certainly had a point. If one is promoted in that fashion, strings might be attached. And if people don't dare to speak up, and share their opinions, because our Adam Henries are silencing them, we can kiss good bye to our Democracy. And we all agree, that Hawthorne has big problems, for some time. We also know it has to do with jobs.

And where is our famous Chamber, the one our charming Hahn was leading, not too long ago. Just look at the chamber membership, and you can see who runs the show. But nonetheless, where are the people, who pay for all the consequences? Have they been put on ice? What about the independent business owners? Are they too busy to get involved?--too busy, struggling for survival.

The police department isn't the master but the servant of them all.
We seem to forget about that, having so many things upside down.
