Santa Cruz killings a wake-up call for residents

Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

The dozens of Westside residents who packed the City Council chamber last week to express outrage about the gang-related slaying of a 19-year-old Santa Cruz High graduate and avid surfer spoke volumes, even before one person stood up to talk.

"Rotkin said, "People feel things more when it hits closer to home. Now people realize if you want to be able to walk outside your house in Santa Cruz or anywhere in the region, it is your issue.""

He's the Mayor, What is HE going to do about it?????

Why was a meeting permitted by the city council at ten thirty at night which included music etc? What a recipe for disaster. And then why did it take 35 minutes for a police response when they should already have been there!!! Is this city council business? These people are more interested in social justice than crime prevention, security for homeowners and commons sense solutions like not allowing a demonstration at that hour of night!

So what was Rotkin's point? It's infuriating that he takes this condenscending tone. When it was happening in the flats, it was up to that neighborhood to pull together. Those of us away from that situation assumed that those who were targeted were other gang members. It was our job to try to keep our own kids out of gangs and bad situations. It is the job of the city council to help create an environment that deters gang activity (e.g. no Sanctuary City status) and the police to enforce the laws. It sounds to me like those city council meetings are an absolute waste of time. Seriously, I'm worried.

Explaining social events, ad infinitum, from the perspective of an evolved "socialist/feminist, " is Rotkin's too-oft-demonstrated forte... Coming to grips with a real problem, initiating useful action, making a difference, being a leader... yeah, sorry, that's all beyond his skill set.

But you'd think he might at least drag his baggage out of the way, and invite someone else to fill the gap.

Cynthia Hawthorne, a board member of Santa Cruz City Schools and a 24-year resident of the Westside, said :
"Parents are responsible for buying the clothes, the caps, the colors,' and local stores that carry the hoodies and such are complicit as well," she said. "We all have to learn that complicit support for gang culture risks our children's safety"

Yea, that's the problem, we should have to dress our children so they don't look like gang members. Don't worry about dealing with the problem, just avoid it by dressing your kids "safely". Let the gang members only kill each other...brilliant.

Not sure if Rotkin is an idiot. But we wake up when it is a NON gang member. If your in a gang it is par for the course. But if I am on my way to get groceries, I should not have to worry about gang bangers.

Simply put it is simply wrong.

Sentinel executives, writers and staff,

When are we going to hear you finally stand up in on of your worthless "As we see it" articles addressing the community, and denounce the Sanctuary City status enacted and supported SC city council and DEMAND the SC city council overturn this single ruling that is destroying the face of Santa Cruz city and county as we know it?

If you came forward and demanded action by the SC City Council to overturn and end Sanctuary City status, you could help save SC "As we once knew it..."

Stand up for what is right and must be done--Ending of Sanctuary City Status in Santa Cruz city!

The Mayor let slip how he really feels, this man is who UCSC students voted in to the city council, I'm sure they're happy with the results, how about you?

For those who aren't familiar with Santa Cruz, the city council members take turns being mayor. You know, equal opportunity for choices made by UCSC.

sad sad sad if santa cruz thinks just calling the police is gonna stop your problem if you take a child under your wing early enough you can mold them to your standard and thats how gangs keep recruitment my suggestion is start school awareness of the problem and appeal too kids with outlets that they like and keep them out the street where they dont belong stay up

... Why is Mari Tustin, Sr. Vice President of The John Stewart Company (JSCo) allowed to continue to perpetrate this lie. The complex has had a serious problem with cars coming and going at all hours of the night and day. People getting in and out of cars and cars speeding off. Scummy people riding in and out on bikes. Drinking and partying inside the back area of the complex by the old visitor's parking.... They knew about the problem back to November 2008 when they took over the management of the property...They knew about the SEVERITY of the problem through complex staff members as early as a year ago... They PROMISED to take to care of it over a year ago, but did nothing...
Very interesting. Wouldn't it be a pleasant surprise to discover that putting the screws to an irresponsible John Stewart Company might eventually result in a less gangster-ridden neighborhood? This seems worth investigating...

The wake up call for residents is... to stop depending on progressive politicians to provide policies and programs that will ensure a safe and sane environment for those who live here and pay taxes. The Rotkins of the world are primarily concerned about providing a safe environment for illegal immigrants and the homeless.

Time for a change at the city and county levels.
