3 suspects were arrested on July 6,2007 for the murder of Cathy Torrez after thirteen years...
Meaning no disrespect to Cathy's Torrez' mother, I must say that her rush to judgment on this case thirteen years ago on the night her daughter disappearance, has done a great injustice to Sam, Xavier, their family and friends. I can't blame her; she is simply doing what any mother in her position would do. The sad thing is that the circumstances upon which she based her belief that Sam murder her daughter is totally unfounded and false. Because Cathy hid certain aspects of her social life from her mother and told her family only the information she wanted them to know, Mrs. Bennet has been chasing after the wrong people all these years. This whole investigation was never about finding the person(s) who brutally killed Cathy, it has been about finding evidence to fit Mrs. Bennett's scenario and put Sam behind bars at whatever cost. The Torrez family and the Placentia Police Department have spent the past thirteen years throwing out evidence that points to anyone else because it doesn't fit their scenario.
Sam and Xavier have alibis. Alibis the police have spent thirteen years trying to discredit. Sam and Javier both volunteered to take polygraph tests and gave blood and hair samples at the beginning of this investigation. They had nothing to hide. Unfortunately they both naively believed in the justice system. Those samples have been analyzed and reanalyzed repeatedly with nothing coming up. How coincidental that months after the "drug raid" where Sam and Armando were put in handcuffs so tight they were complaining of their circulation, new DNA evidence surfaces. I wouldn't put it past these particular officers to have swabbed those handcuffs for Sam's DNA to plant on evidence they have had in storage all these years.
For the past thirteen years the Placentia Police Department has threatened to charge a number of Sam and Xavier's friends with accessory to murder. This is strictly a circumstantial case and the police know it. They have chosen to use underhanded tactics trying to force a confession out of Sam, Xavier, their family or friends because they don't want to risk going through trial with circumstantial evidence.
Sam, Xavier, their family and friends have been nothing but cooperative these past thirteen years because they have nothing to hide. And in return for their cooperation they have been lied to, harassed, dismissed and smeared in the media. They have been accused of dealing drugs and thievery as a guise for the police to raid and search their homes and businesses looking for evidence in the murder. The lead detective in this case, Officer Wyatt, has been behind each and every one of these supposed "raids", every time hoping that he could harass someone into a confession and each time failing because there has been no crime committed by these guys to confess to. Officer Wyatt hit an all-time low when he let the police officers put Sam's eleven-year-old daughter in handcuffs for hours while they search the home claiming to look for drugs. When Sam's wife complained, Officer Corinne Loomis publicly covered-up and excuse their actions by claiming the Department did not know the age of the child and thought her to be an older teenager. This was a flat-out line. The Placentia Police Department knew exactly how old that little girl was and in case they had forgotten were informed when they interviewed friends of Sam's the day before the raid and specifically asked who lived in the home and how old Sam's daughter was. They were hoping that if Sam saw his eleven-year-old daughter in handcuffs he would confess to them in order to stop the raid. And in order to make up for it they presented the little girl with a DARE award. That shows you just what the Placentia Police Department is made of. They are willing to abuse a child hoping it will be to their benefit.

How do you know that I am telling the truth? Have drug charges ever resulted from this raid? No, because Sam and Armando are not drug dealers and there were no drugs to find. Will there be charges brought against them for what the police claim to be "stolen merchandise"? No, again because that was all made up. There is no stolen merchandise in that home and there are records and receipts for all the cash found.
On the day of the arrests, the Placentia Police Department called the media so that they could be present when they arrested Xavier at his home. Yet, at the exact same time they were arresting Xavier they were arresting Sam (the man they claim is the main suspect) and yet the media was not invited to observe. Why? Because the Police Department did not want the media to see the assault they were planning on that home. Don't believe me? Go by the home and take a look. Sam has always been cooperative with the police. The police only had to go knock on the door and Sam would have come out. Instead they had the SWAT Team go blow out almost all of the windows with smoke grenades and ram the door with assault rifles drawn (knowing the brothers had no weapons). All the neighbors who observed it said it was ridiculous, unnecessary and a complete overkill! So why did the Placentia Police Department choose to arrest Sam this way? As a scare tactic and form of harassment, again trying to force a confession out of him.
And how about the motive? Do you find it strange that the police are willing to make statements about everything else but will not state a motive? Well, that is because they don't have one. All of this talk about Sam and Cathy eloping was just that, talk by Cathy. The police haven't given the media the motive because they are still making one up. And when they finally come up with a motive that will fit what circumstantial evidence they have I'm sure it will be a douse!
Officer Wyatt had claimed they got into a heated argument and Sam killed Cathy accidentally. Sam has never been violent. He would never lay a hand on a female. But the police donít want to believe that. Since Sam's marriage ended the police have interviewed Sam's wife again wanting her to say Sam is violent. But she has never, and will never, say such a thing because it is not true. Whoever did this to Cathy is an extremely, cold-hearted, violent person. Sam is not. Xavier is not.
As for Sam and Xavier, look into their background. Talk to the people who actually know them. They are not the gang member, drug dealer, thieves Mrs. Bennet and the Placentia Police Department are hoping the public will believe them to be. And they look nothing like the people in those awful mug shots. They are extremely kind, generous and caring people who would do anything to help their family, friends and neighbors. Sam, Javier, Armando, all of their family and their friends know the truth and after 13 years of harassment will no longer stand around and be stomped on and slandered by Mrs. Bennet or the Placentia Police Department. Those times are over and they are ready for the fight. This whole case is ridiculous and in the end, the truth will come out and Sam, Javier and Armando will all be acquitted. The true tragedy in this situation is that we have a cold-blooded killer out there, living free from suspicion and laughing that he/she/they got away with murder all because Mrs. Bennet was so blinded by her personal dislike of Sam and false stories fed to her by her daughter, that she led the entire investigation in the wrong direction.
There are two-sides to every story and this one will be told when the defense gets to present its case. I hope that someone untouched and unbiased by Mrs. Bennet will start the investigation into Cathy's murder over, leading to the identity of the real killer(s). Not only for Cathy's sake, but Sam's, Xavier's and Armando's.

I think that the persons that are making this comments, about Ms.Bennett and the case are friends of Sam, Xavier and Armando. I respet that you are trying to defend this guy's. Just how I would defend Cathy and her way of living. For your information Cathy never kept anything from her family. You probably did or did not know her...I did and we were very close. But we will see at the end of the trail. Good luck ....

I grew up in Placentia, I went to school with Sam & Kathy. She was my childhood friend & I still think about her horrible murder. It's so sad that after so many years, they haven't solved this murder. All those comments made on behalf of Sam and Javie, are because people are still protecting them & hiding the truth of Kathy's murder. Of course, they were thick as thieves in school & continue to be crime buddies. They both had something to do with her murder & there might not have solid proof, but they know they were involved. If they don't pay for their crimes on earth, they will pay when they meet their maker, that's for sure....

The arrests were made long ago but no one has been convicted or gone through a trial have they? Has anyone any more information on this story? I know there are people in jail but why? Can you be held indefinitely?

I saw the story on Dateline as well. I believe all 3 men were involved and they helped each other cover it up. But Sam was the mastermind. I also think that Sam killed the boy who hung himself. Sam hit him over the head with something then made it look like suicide.

In the Cathy Torrez murder investigation, What was the name of the expert that Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy hired to review Sam Lopez's interrogation interview tapes?

He finally admitted it. I prayed for the truth for Cathy's family. No mother should have to lose a child in that way. RIP Cathy Torrez.

My heart goes out to Cathy's mother and family. Her family has a life of personal torment living without their loved one. They will all be reunited in heaven with the sweetest joy. What a beautiful girl they brought into this world and I personally am touched by her story. Now she is a sweet angel. If I ever receive a dozen roses I will think of her and say her name in remembrance.
